Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Built in 1984 but still thinks it's 1934 - the Morgan 4/4 proves nostalgia never goes out of style.

Originally released in 1936, the Morgan 4/4 has served as one of the world's longest automotive production runs in history. With only a brief pause in manufacturing during the Second World War, the Morgan 4/4 spans a whopping 83 years, with production finally ending in 2019. Having been through a number of revisions during that time, this particular Morgan 4/4 is one of the later 1600 models, and has just achieved historic status. It benefits from a number of manufacturing changes and upgrades, such as the 1.6-litre Ford CVH engine and five-speed manual gearbox. The iconic exterior styling of the Morgan 4/4 is instantly recognisable; the curvaceous front wings, the sloping rear arches, and the retro wire wheel design all come together to form the perfect representation of classic British motoring.

A model that has been refined over the years but has never moved far from its roots, the Morgan 4/4 is a fantastic choice for a well-maintained British classic such as this lovely 1984 example.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Robert the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I wanted a vintage car, and although not vintage, the Morgan has the same style, which I liked.

Twenty-two years ago, Bob took ownership of a non-running Morgan purchased from a work colleague, who had owned it for fifteen years, so between Bob and his work colleague they've known it’s history for ~35 of it’s 40 years. The owner at the time couldn’t get the car to run due to a fuel pump issue and wanted to fit an electric pump.

Bob convinced him that it would be better to retain the originality and persuaded him to sell it as it was. A new pump was acquired and after a quick switch around and the Morgan was alive again, and since then it’s has never looked back having had many UK and European Trips.

Modifications include Servo Assisted brakes, and manual choke carburettor. Renovation work includes a bare metal respray, rebuilt front and rear suspension and a replacement clutch.

Exterior

The 1930s style still looks as charming today as it did when it was initially designed.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with wire wheels, these are in good condition and have been finished in satin black. The tyres are a matching set of Maxxis, which are in excellent condition with plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for detailed shots.

Bodywork

The Morgan’s bodywork presents well, having received a full bare metal respray by Bob 13 years ago.

The bonnet and doors align well and open and close easily.

The rear arches aren’t quite as smooth as they would have originally been and may have had some body repair at some point.

High-resolution images and videos have been provided, so please review all media to assess the car’s condition thoroughly.

Paint

Finished in the original 'Signal Red' colour and looking consistent across the panels - it's of a 'drivers' standard' as there are some minor issues / blemishes, but nothing excessive, considering it was repainted 13 years ago.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is in good condition, having been replaced a few years ago. There are two additional side screens fitted, which help with wind reduction. The side screens, being plastic, do have some scratches to them through general use.

The removable roof is in very good condition, as are the plastic windows.

Interior

With no complications, the Morgan has a functional and straightforward dashboard layout.

Seats and Carpets

The carpets are in good condition, although Bob does have another set to be fitted. The original 'Stone' leather seats have some age-related patina but no signs of damage, and the same can be said for the door cards.

Dashboard

The simple dashboard is covered with 'Stone' leather to match the seats.

All the instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~28,301 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel has a small amount of age-related wear but presents well.

The gear knob looks like a Sierra one and shows the five-speed clearly.

Please refer to the interior gallery for more images.

Mechanics

The tried and tested Ford 1600cc CVH engine performs well in the Morgan.

Engine and Gearbox

The Ford CVH is a well-known engine used for many years by Ford. In the Morgan, this performs very well thanks to the lightweight body. Bob fitted a new Weber carburettor in 2021 with a manual choke, which is more reliable than the factory automatic unit.

The engine fires up straight away from cold, as seen in our cold start video, and runs with no issues reported.

The gearbox is a five-speed, which has smooth changes and no untoward noises coming from the drivetrain.

It’s also worth noting that a new clutch was fitted in 2019.

Suspension and Brakes

In 2019, Bob rebuilt the front and rear suspension. This was done around ~2,000 miles ago, so the car still feels very tight on the road, and it handles very well.

The brakes have been upgraded with a servo so they operate as you would expect a more modern car to, bringing the car to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Driving the Morgan 4/4 is a charming, analogue experience that connects you directly to the road. With its lightweight body, lively four-cylinder 1.6L CVH engine, and minimal driver aids, every journey feels raw and engaging, just as you would expect from the mechanical era of motoring.

Electrics and Other

Inside the Morgan, the switchgear is minimal; there is some light age-related wear to the switches, but everything is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

With a detailed history file and spreadsheet - now ready for a new owner to take over.

Throughout Bob's ownership, he has kept a spreadsheet detailing all the work he’s carried out on the car, services, repaint, MOT - you name it, it’s on there along with the mileage and cost.

To back this up, there is also a collection of invoices for parts purchased over the years, and importantly, a great stack of MOT certificates showing the car has been in regular use.

With a suspension refresh, a new carb, and the reliable 1.6-litre CVH engine, the Morgan is a very usable British classic which the next owner will have the greatest pleasure owning.

We've carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and running an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, relax, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time—we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.
If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win—just like in a traditional auction house.

Auction End Time Extended – Important Update

We’ve recently completed some major upgrades to our website, and while we’re actively working to resolve a few issues that have arisen, we want to ensure that all bidders have a smooth and fair experience.

As a precaution, we have extended the auction end time from Thursday evening, 15th May to Tuesday, 20th May.

This extension is being made to give everyone ample time to place their bids without any technical difficulties, and to ensure a fair auction process for all participants.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support!
