Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The Aston Martin V8 is a machine of understated style and elegance, one of the finest cars of its era.

These Aston Martin cars were completely hand-built and required over 1,200 man-hours to finish. Just ~1,018 examples of the Series III AM V8 were built during the five years between 1973 and 1978, of which only ~484 had the automatic gearbox. This model AMV8 replaced the AM V8 Series 2 (the DBS V8). The DBS models had introduced the William Towns body styling. In 1972 the six-cylinder engine used in earlier DB models was replaced with the 5.3 litre V8 engine designed by Tadek Marek. This power unit, used in this Series III AMV8, was powerful enough to propel it to over ~150MPH. In 1973, Aston Martin switched from fuel injection to carburettors, this was externally noticeable by the taller bonnet scoop to accommodate the four twin-choke (twin-barrel) Weber carburettors. The Series III also reverted to the famous “shark’s mouth” grille. In addition, the V8 benefited from ventilated disc brakes, air-conditioning and larger tyres.

This car has been in current ownership for ~27 years, and an important detail to note is all potentially expensive issues will have been ironed out a long time ago. This car is presented in "Smoked Silver", with a tan interior which has recently been deep cleaned. It also benefits from a new set of Avon tyres, as originally fitted. It has a good record of maintenance , 2 sets of keys and is MOT and road tax exempt of course.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Clive the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Aston was a perfect car for me, the ideal companion for European adventures.

The car was used by Clive for numerous trips to and from Geneva during the 6 years that he lived and worked in Switzerland. In addition the car was used almost daily during the summer months for commuting between his home and office in Geneva. It has proved its reliability many times over!

Having enjoyed it for the past ~27 years, an increasing lack of use now is the main reason for its sale. Clive will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Elegantly finished, the car has benefited from years of considerate ownership.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 15” alloy wheels are smartly presented, with just minor signs of age present as pictured.

The car is fitted with a set of period correct issue Avon tyres. They all date from 2022, and are in good shape with even tread.

image

Bodywork

The panel fit is flush with even shut lines. All doors open and close without issue, although the boot lid needs assistance to stay open. The body is free of significant distractions, there is a treatable small dent spotted on the driver's door and a handful of minor corrosion areas. These were spotted on the top of the offside front wing, base of the nearside A-pillar and corner of the passenger door. The structure of the car appears solid, with no issues noted on the floor pan, wheel wells, engine bay or wheel wells.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The "Smoked Silver" paint has a consistent coverage and has a pleasing lustre throughout. There are a few surface marks in places, which appear to be confined to the nose. There is a small paint crack near the bonnet scoop, a chip on the top of the rear window frame and a minor scratch under the front bumper. We also spotted some paint imprecations on the rear valance.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim are all tidy, with no problems with the chrome trim. The lights and lenses are in good condition too.

image

Interior

The near-perfect cabin is very original and retains its 8-track player!

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in good order, only showing mild age-related creases, no notable damage to worry about.

The carpets are clean and damp free, including the ones on the doors, and the door cards look good too.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard has been well looked after, and is free of any significant marks or wear, other than a little loose trim around the ventilation system.

The dials and controls retain a pleasing appeal. The interior trim and headlining are in good condition as pictured.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a 3 spoked Aston Martin wheel, wrapped in black leather. It presents well considering the age, and the automatic gear selector looks good too, with just some small marks around surround on the centre console.

image

Mechanics

The wonderful roar from that V8 is music to your ears, this car benefitting from a rebuilt engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start didn’t pose any issues, and the engine remained free of unwanted noises. The dashboard lights all stayed off as the exhaust consideration soon cleared up. The car remained free of any unwanted exhaust fumes or engine fluid leaks during the visit.

The engine is cleanly displayed, showing plenty of signs of regular maintenance, as backed up by the invoices. Recent works by Turner Classics include the removal and re-work of manifolds, and downpipes and a general assessment of the exhaust system. A full service was carried at the same time.

The automatic gearbox operates smoothly, with no slippage and response in action. Watch the video of the car out on the road to get a sense of what driving it would be like.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Historical work on the suspension re-assembly by Hyde Vale Aston Martin has been carried out, this is reflected by the smooth absorption of the road, feeling supple, with no unwanted noises.

A rebuild has been carried out on the brake servos, which involved a re-work & bleeding of the front brakes. The brakes have benefited from upgraded Excel 6-pot callipers, substantially larger Mintex Virage pads and braided calliper hoses, a speciality of racecar specialists Fosseway Performance.

image

The Drive

Clive demonstrated that the appeal of the Aston is that wonderful thrum of the V8 engine, more than happy to demonstrate its soundtrack during the test drive. The car was nicely composed on the road, pulling smoothly without hesitation. We were treated to a smooth and relaxed cruise at ~50MPH, hovering around 3,000 rpm with no unwanted noses from the engine or wheels.

The power steering feels precise and reassuring, with no negative feedback or pulling at the wheels when braking, and the car corners with confidence. The oil pressure and engine temperature remained stable during the test drive.

image

Electrics and Other

Between 2009 and 2013 the car was regularly exhibited at the Swiss Classic British Car Meeting held annually on the first Saturday in October in Morges, Switzerland, on the shores of Lac Leman.

The car retains its original 8-track stereo, Clive told us to his knowledge everything was in working order.

History and Paperwork

This UK supplied RHD comes to market from ~27 year ownership, presents beautifully, and has a maintenance record that shows considerate and caring custodianship.

First registered in February 1974, the car comes with an impressive provenance, showing invoices going back to 1986 and MOTs to 1979. Recent works by Turner Classics include the removal and re-work of manifolds, downpipes, and a general assessment of the exhaust system. Attention and rebuilding of the brake servos, re-work and bleeding of front brakes, and, finally, full service to the tune of almost £4,000.

Earlier, in 2020, Lenham Sports Cars in Kent replaced the rear discs and pads as well as various other ancillaries relating to a loose driveshaft, bearings and seals. The brakes now benefit from upgraded Excel 6-pot callipers, substantially larger Mintex Virage pads and braided calliper hoses, a speciality of Fosseway Performance. Aston Martin’s Pugsley & Lewis serviced the car comprehensively in 2002 (or 8,500 miles ago) including renovating the a/c and including numerous ancillary items, a complete list of which can be found in the history file. Prior to this, Fourways Engineering invoiced £8,000 for dropping the engine out and stripping it completely due to a broken valve.

In 1990, a bare-metal respray changed the car from chocolate brown to its current shade. Prior to that, extensive invoices show complete coach trimming, rebuilt air conditioning, and suspension re-assembly by Hyde Vale Aston Martin. The car comes with two sets of keys and is MOT and Road Tax exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Hi Clive,
It would’ve been useful to hear the engine running when hot. Having owned 2 of these cars in the past I have to say that it does sound excessively noisy when running
cold, in fact I’m not certain it’s running on all 8.
    Regards silvagost

    Hi Clive ,
I have taken more than 1 other look at the video of your Aston and can only come to much the same conclusion that the engine is excessively noisy and missy on tick over I note that the service history states that the engine was stripped due to a broken valve.
I’m not suggesting that this is any thing to do with the present noise but the top end is definitely noisy seemingly on 1 cylinder.
Oil pressure is good suggesting a strong bottom end.
    Regards silvagost.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
