Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

A true British classic that blends open-top charm, punchy performance, and timeless style into one unforgettable package.

The Austin-Healey 3000 Mk3 (BJ8) represents the grand finale of the legendary “Big Healey” line, which began in the early 1950s with the 100. Introduced in 1963 and produced until 1967, the BJ8 was the most refined and powerful version, equipped with an uprated inline-six engine. Enhancements like wind-up windows, a walnut-veneer dash, better weatherproofing, and improved ride comfort made it more usable for longer drives, while still preserving its classic British sports car character.

To mark 15 years of Austin-Healey production, a special run of golden beige 3000 Mk3s was commissioned - around 500 examples in total. Most were exported to the US, but around 50 right-hand-drive cars remained in the UK. These were typically trimmed with black interiors, although a few had red, and an even smaller number - like this example - featured rare silver piping with the red upholstery. Only one other car like this is known to exist in the country today.

This example comes from ~56 years ownership with our vendor, and just 1 former keeper before that. It is estimated over ~£15,000 worth of restoration work was carried out some ~20 years ago with several key aspects such as chassis, wheel arch, floor and boot pan work, body alignment, new front and rear shocks, piston replacement, new exhaust system, new badges and emblems and a full respray. The 3000 comes with a great amount of paperwork and spares, a heritage certificate, tonneau and roof cover and a current MOT valid until April 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A real favourite of mine for over 50 years now, a true classic that turns heads and makes an incredible noise!

Paul, the current owner, has owned the car for over ~56 years after purchasing it from its former owner after just 6 months use. He tells us more about his ownership of the car "After returning from 18 months as a VSO volunteer in the Malawian bush, I came home to find my post-graduation Austin-Healey 100/6 badly damaged. I eventually sold it to someone who repurposed the engine for a speedboat in the Lake District. Not long after, a new chapter began, both in cars and life, when my future wife introduced me to a beautiful Mk3 BJ8. I bought it for £800. It was finished in stunning Golden Beige and in immaculate condition, perfect for open-top adventures, including a memorable tour of Ireland with my wife, Pauline".

Paul tells us more about how the Austin-Healey was restored through its years, "From 1986 to 1991, the car underwent a full rebuild from the chassis up, with great care taken to preserve its originality, including the original colour. Over the years it has seen a few changes - it was painted red for our wedding and Arctic White in the early ’80s". The 3000 comes to market due to less usage and a few struggles getting into a lower stance car "Sadly, age has caught up with me at 81, it’s become a struggle just getting in and out, and my children prefer more modern cars. So now it’s time to find this cherished classic a new home. I only hope it brings its next owner as much joy as it brought me". Should any further questions be required on the car, Paul would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its long bonnet and low-slung stance, the Mk3 exudes timeless roadster charm - elegant at a standstill, and even better in motion.

Wheels and Tyres

The 3000 is set on 15" multi-spoke wire wheels. These are in lovely condition with very minor marks and overall look really smart. The main section of the wheels benefitted from some light restorative works in 2021.

The wheels are fitted with a set of Kumho Power Star 756 tyres to the front and Continental Contact to the rear. The condition of tyres looks good overall with no obvious cracking or concerning signs of wear. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Austin-Healey and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

image

Bodywork

Looking over the car, we found no major dings or marks noted. Both doors and bonnet and boot open and close well without concern. As part of the restoration project, the Austin was stripped to its chassis - drilled, filled and rebuilt. The panel gaps and shut-lines on this car are good we think, considering the age and when the restoration work was completed.

The hood for the Austin looks good, but is showing some age and a small tear and would benefit from a replacement, Paul mentioned to us that he thinks it is the original item. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in an attractive tone of "Metallic Golden Beige", the coverage shows well across the car with no noted differences in colour. There were a couple of minor stone chips towards the front of the car, and some imperfections to the finish at the front and rear, but nothing overly concerning. The car was painted red in Paul's younger days, and "Arctic White" too, although returned to its original heritage colour after its respray in October 1990, and most recently ~20 years ago.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

In general, the windscreen mirrors all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of chips on the main glass sections. There were however some signs of de-lamination to the windscreen as pictured, and the chrome trim around the windscreen shows ageing.

The emblems and badges to the front and rear look great around the exterior and in line with the condition of the rest of the car. The front badge was originally red, but was chromed as part of its restoration.

image

Interior

Walnut dash, leather-trimmed details, and a cockpit designed for open-road adventure, all wrapped in timeless elegance.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with smart red leather, both front and rear sections of the car look to be in good condition after some restoration in 1991, but show a few signs of wear on the back sides of the seats and the door cards - overall though, this was a well presented interior. New seatbelts were also fitted in 1991.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats appeared to be in great condition having been replaced in the 90's. Checking over the boot, it displayed well again benefitting from its restoration work.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

Clean and without fuss, the walnut dash appears in good shape with no major issues, just some signs of age. The top of the dash presents well and without splits or cracking to this section. A lovely note was the inset red leather in the dash centre section. The odometer showed with ~67,980 miles at the time of our visit, which is believed to be genuine given the ~56 year ownership.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the dials and gauges were all functioning without concern. We did note some signs of wear to the dial facings.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A clean, black steering wheel shows in good condition without major signs of wear. The centre mounted indicator switch is a nice note to the heritage of the car.

The same can be said for the gearstick which shows no visible signs of major wear or damage, and presents in good condition along with its gaiter surround. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

image

Mechanics

Delivering ~150BHP of smooth, torquey power through the straight-six from factory, the Austin is perfect for spirited grand touring with that unmistakable British roar.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting the car up from cold showed no issues and it drives without concern with its manual gearbox transferring the power to the rear wheels nicely. Paul has been taking the car for a regular MOT's, almost annually, since the rebuild in ~1990s.

The 3000 functions very well and goes through the gears without any issue. We heard no signs of slipping or any other issues with the clutch. We took the car on a short drive and go into further detail about the Austin-Healey, take a look at the the mechanical review video to see the detail and the car in action.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out around some local roads, we heard no unwanted knocks, bangs or other noises from the suspension, it provided an enjoyable journey.

The brakes had no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem, with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

Paul, the current owner tells us more about his driving experience with the Austin-Healey, "For me, the magic of this Healey has always been in its sound, the open air, and the thrill of fast cornering".

image

Electrics and Other

The electrical setup is simple and straightforward. Paul let us know that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

The car is complete with its original radio, optional roof and tonneau cover. An overview of the additional spares included with the Austin-Healey is pictured in our paperwork gallery section.

History and Paperwork

A real rarity - 56 year current ownership, a UK home market RHD, rare late Mk3 in a rare colour presenting in beautiful condition.

Originally purchased by Paul in 1969 with just ~800 miles on the clock, this Austin-Healey 3000 has a rich and well-documented history. Bought from a director at Royal General Insurance in Lytham, the car had only been owned for six months and was acquired for £800 at the time.

While engineering wasn't Paul's strong suit, he was fortunate to have all the documentation - and for the past two decades, the car has been lovingly cared for by a dedicated engineer. The car was painted red in Paul's younger days, although returned to its original heritage colour in the 90's. Still sharp and stylish, it remains a standout even by modern standards.

The Healey was rebuilt in the late 1980's where the offside rear chassis, rear spring hanger, offside sills, and front and rear wheel arches, floor pans and boot pans were replaced. The engine was removed during the rebuild process, with the pistons replaced, chassis blast, an engine bay repaint and steam cleaning, fitment of door rubbers and aluminium tread plates, door alignment work and body shell respray.

Additional works through the rebuild and restorative works included; Clean up of diff unit, new bushings, seals and bearings, fitment of radius arms, new front and rear shock absorbers, overhauled brake cylinders and and blasting was carried out to the body panels, hinges with minor rust areas welded. Badges, emblems and front grille were replaced and renewed, along with new boot lining, door and windscreen glass, front and rear bumpers and a new exhaust system fitted. All additional works were completed by 1990.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
