Produced from 1938, it's probably safe to say the Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic vehicles ever made. Practicality and reliability were central to the design of this classic, along with affordability — earning it the title of the ‘people’s car’. Over more than 80 years of production, the Beetle has undergone many changes, from the early split rear screen and oval windows to suspension and engine upgrades. It’s a car that has evolved over time without straying too far from its roots.

This 1300 Beetle began life as a tin-top model and was converted into a cabriolet several years ago by a former keeper. The Beetle comes to market after ~8 years with our vendor, it has covered very few miles in the past ten years, it’s the ideal summer chariot for a new owner!

Meet the owner

Too good to miss, the Beetle convertible has been a pleasure to own.

The car has been in the family for approximately eight years and, during that time, has seen very little use — mainly as a weekend car when the weather was exceptionally good.

Exterior

A Guards Red exterior with a white roof is just one of the many details that help this Beetle Cabriolet stand out.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels are finished in cream with chrome hub caps. The paintwork is in good condition, and the chrome has a bright finish and some small dings etc that have been picked up over the years. Firestone tyres are fitted all round, with plenty of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The Beetle has undergone previous modification to become a cabriolet, and the conversion appears to have been carried out to a good standard. Inside, you’ll notice two strengthening sections just in front of the rear seat. All the panel gaps appear consistent. There are a few blemishes in places, including a couple of small blisters on the offside edge of the bonnet.

Paint

Finished in bright red — believed to be "Guards Red" — the car presents well from a distance. On close inspection, some minor marks beneath the paint can be seen from earlier preparation work.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition with no noticeable scratches. The door rubbers show minor age-related perishing, but these would be easy to replace.

The quarter windows are made from Perspex; there is a small crack in the nearside one, but a replacement could easily be made using the original as a template. The white vinyl roof is in good condition, fits well, and shows no obvious signs of damage.

Interior

The red and white interior matches the exterior perfectly.

Seats and Carpets

The front and rear seats have been retrimmed in red and white vinyl, which remains in excellent condition with no signs of damage. Both door cards are finished in white vinyl, they do show age with marks in places.

The carpets throughout the cabin are in great condition with no obvious signs of wear. There is no carpet in the front boot area, but the spare wheel is present.

Dashboard

Continuing the red and white theme, the dashboard is in good condition with no scratches. The odometer shows ~38,315 miles at the time of our visit and is reported to be working correctly.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Wolfsburg-badged steering wheel is painted white and shows minor age-related wear. The gear lever has also been painted, and some paint has started to flake.

Mechanics

The 1300cc air-cooled flat-four is a reliable, tried-and-tested engine used by VW for many years.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay presents well. The car starts quickly and settles into a smooth idle. On the road, it drives as expected, with no reported issues. The four-speed gearbox provides smooth changes, and gears are easily selected.

Suspension and Brakes

Comfort is the Beetle’s strong suit. Designed to cope with various road conditions, it handles predictably, and the suspension operates quietly with no knocks or bangs. The brakes bring the car to a stop in a straight line, with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Driving the VW Beetle 1300 is a nostalgic delight. Its 1.3-litre air-cooled engine offers modest performance, but its lightweight construction, rear-engine layout, and manual gearbox make for a charming and engaging experience. Simple, iconic, and full of character, it’s perfect for relaxed cruising — especially with the roof down.

Electrics and Other

The original switchgear shows some patina but is said to be functioning correctly. There is a slight issue with the ignition switch — occasionally, you may need to turn the key twice for it to make contact.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~8 year ownership, this Beetle was converted to a cabriolet by a previous owner, and presents an opportunity for a good value entry to classic car ownership.

The Beetle comes from ~8 years with Peter, there are a few previous MOT certificates with the car. Due to the low mileage over recent years, servicing has been carried out by the vendor. Unfortunately, no history was provided by the previous keeper, so the paperwork is limited.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verification of photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car is not stolen, written off, or subject to outstanding finance. Please note: This check does not verify mileage.

    What is your reserve policy?

    If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

    Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

    Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

    Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

    Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
