Quite possibly the ultimate 60s sporting saloon, loved and used by many, including police forces and the bank robbers they were chasing!

Created for the new age of long-distance motorway cruising, with the potential to traverse the continent with comfort and space, the Mk2 Jaguar established the company as one of the world's foremost manufacturers of sporting family cars. An elegant evolution from the original models, the introduction of the 1959 Mk2 utilised the advanced series of XK engines which powered the E-Types. Soon establishing itself as something of a literal everyman car, its race-track provenance continued to enhance Jaguar's reputation as the producer of finely tuned sporting cars.

Towards the end of the car's life, the specifications were mildly toned down to reflect the more competitive pricing of the Mk2, but the character and virtues remained intact. The 3.4-litre with twin SU HD6 carburettors and manual overdrive gearboxes are often considered one of the more sought-after Mk2 versions. Producing a useful ~210BHP, these finely balanced cars still feel genuinely quick to drive.

This very well-presented 1968 Jaguar 340 is in excellent condition following; an engine rebuild and mechanical overhaul ~2011, a bare-metal restoration around ~8 years ago, a full interior re-trim in leather ~2 years ago, and re-plated chrome work just ~4 weeks ago. It comes to market from ~8 year ownership, is a UK RHD and has just 5 former keepers registered. It comes with a fresh MOT valid until 30.04.2026.

Meet the owner

The car was restored by a panel beater for himself, so when it came for sale, I couldn't miss it because I knew had been done right.

With an appreciation for all classics, Dennis has been the proud owner of this 1968 Mk2 Jaguar for the past ~8 years. During that time, he has maintained, fettled, and meticulously cared for the British classic just like it deserves.

Exterior

It's got more curves than a twisty British B-road, and somehow it makes it look just right.

Wheels and Tyres

As it should be, the car is fitted with wire wheels, which are finished in silver and in excellent condition. A matching set of Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres, which are also fitted, are in like-new condition.

Bodywork

With a full bare-metal restoration, the Jaguar was in the right hands—carried out by a professional panel beater for himself. It goes without saying this was completed to a high standard.

The panel gaps are matching, and no dings or dents were spotted when we looked around the car, nor did we spot any obvious signs of corrosion either. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the original colour of "British Racing Green", the paintwork presents extremely well with just very few minor blemishes on the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The chrome work is in superb condition, having only been re-plated four weeks prior to us taking the photographs.

The lights are all in good condition with no damage to the lenses. All of the windows are in good order with no noticeable scratches. Also, the seals and trims look in good condition, with some ageing to the surrounds.

Interior

A fresh re-trim two years ago — the interior is in spectacular condition.

Seats and Carpets

A full retrim in tan leather with contrasting green piping to match the exterior has been actioned in the current ownership. The seats are in excellent condition with no signs of age thanks to not being used an enormous amount since the work.

All of the carpets were also replaced and are therefore in excellent condition throughout. The same for the door cards too, the car upgraded to leather from the original black vinyl. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The Burr Walnut dashboard has been refinished and is in superb condition — it really does look like a work of art.

All of the instruments are working correctly and are in good condition, and the odometer shows a reading of ~55,811 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original two-spoke steering wheel is in good order, with just a small amount of crazing to the centre badge.

The column-mounted shifter operates correctly, and the gear display works as it should. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Its 3.4-litre engine is so smooth, it purrs like a contented cat — right up until you ask it to pounce!

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.4-litre straight-six starts and runs smoothly, with no issues on oil pressure, as can be seen in our on-the-road video. Looking over the history, the car had an engine rebuild in ~2011 that included new pistons. The car has also recently been serviced.

On the road, the automatic gearbox has a smooth change, and the Jag pulls well through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

Out in the car, the Jaguar soaks up the road with ease, providing a smooth, comfortable ride, yet still able to handle the twisty bits precisely when needed.

No knocks or bangs are coming from either corner, and the car comes to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Driving the 1968 Mk2 Jaguar 340 is a quintessentially British motoring experience, blending classic charm with surprising performance. The 3.4-litre straight-six engine delivers a smooth surge of power, accompanied by the rich growl of twin exhausts.

With its supple suspension, leather-trimmed cabin, and wood veneer dashboard, the ride feels refined yet engaging. The Mk2’s precise steering and lively rear-wheel-drive setup make it enjoyable on winding roads.

Electrics and Other

The car's switchgear is all in good condition and is reported to work correctly. The only thing which doesn’t work is the radio, which has not been investigated.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~8 year ownership, this UK RHD had a bare metal restoration and comes with S.N.G Barratt Group invoices for all the parts and money that has been lavished on the car over the past ~15 years.

The heritage certificate, along with a stack of invoices from S.N.G Barratt Group for various parts purchased during the restoration, is included in the history file, in particular parts for an engine rebuild ~2011. There is also a selection of photographs showing the car in various stages before, during, and after the restoration. The Mk2 comes with a fresh MOT valid until 30.04.2026.
