Introduction

Kulraj Salh
COO

Small, nimble, sporty and a real looker, this stylish Alfa is the definitive 60's Italian classic experience.

The 1950s marked Alfa Romeo’s move to refined sports cars that contrasted with the large and luxury cars that had established the company’s reputation before the Second World War. The Giulietta was introduced at the 1954 Turin Motor Show, showing that Alfa’s shift in focus was a wise one and it sold in large numbers and in many different body styles. With competition never far from focus, Alfa also believed that their Giuliettas, both the two-seat spider and the Bertone-bodied coupe 'Sprint', would find success with their eager engines and lively handling. They were right, as the Giulietta proved a very popular choice among both enthusiasts and amateur racers on both sides of the Atlantic.

In 1961 the Giulietta was updated a second time. With revised engines and new exhaust systems; output and performance was increased as a result. With the new engines, the car could reach a speed of almost ~99mph, an impressive achievement for cars of the time. At the front of the car, square mesh side grilles were pieced together with the centre shield, and at the rear there were larger tail lights. Today, Giuliettas are valued for their beauty, great responsiveness, sophisticated but sound engines and sheer fun factor.

The model on show here is a lovely example of the "Sprint". Showing a mileage of ~44,001 miles, it was imported by the current owners from South Africa where it was first sold, and was part of a fairly sizeable Alfa Romeo collection. The car has had an older restoration at some point in its life, and was imported to the UK in 2018, and has more recently been on the Isle of Man. It presents in lovely condition for an older restored car, worth a good look if you're in the market for one of these.

This listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Emmajane the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's the kind of car that just puts a smile on your face straight away, the sound of the twin-cam is synonymous with the marque.

Having been imported from South Africa in 2018, the Alfa has been really well looked after "She's just such a stunning little car, you can see where the lineage to the 105 series comes from". While it's been on the Isle of Man, it has spent a lot of time loaned out to the Motor Museum there, and so has covered minimal miles.

With the car not getting the use it really deserves and begs for, and Emmajane looking to trim down on the number of cars, this one comes to auction. She will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Enjoyable to drive and what a sight to behold, the Giulietta is a charming car that just oozes Alfa Romeo class and style.

Wheels and Tyres

The Giulietta Sprint is equipped with 15" Alfa badged steel wheels with chrome hubcaps that show in great condition around all four corners of the car.

Complete with Kumho Power Star 758 tyres, running 155/80 to the front and rear, these are date coded from 2003. The tread shows well, and the condition of tyres looks good too with no obvious cracking that can come with age.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Alfa and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and we could see no distortion to the panels. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well, exactly as you would expect from Alfa Romeo build quality. If we were being picky, the offside door needs a bit of adjustment to the catch/slam panel to make the door close closer to the car.

Looking over and under the car, we didn't observe any obvious signs of corrosion, it clearly been well cared for since being restored at some point. Take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

On show in an attractive coat of "Bianco Gardenia" (Gardenia White), the Giulietta looks every part the 60s classic. We noted the paint had a good level of coverage and an even lustre on the finish across all the body.

Whilst its quality is good, the car does have a couple of areas that are worth noting that have mainly come with age. The leading edge on the boot section had a mark noted on it, along with a couple of stone chips to the front face section, although we had to look fairly closely to spot these.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen section, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. The chrome sections to the front of the car were looking great when we reviewed the exterior sections, just some signs of age.

The seals on the whole look good and in tact around the car and in line with the rest of the condition of the car, there were a few minor nicks and some signs of cracking in the rubber, but given the age of the car, nothing too concerning.

Interior

Sitting in the Giulietta's cabin area is like a flashback to the 60's, with original features and classic Alfa design, it's a really lovely place to be.

Seats and Carpets

Seat sections look great in the interior, comfortable and inviting, the finish is smart across the materials, piping looks good and the white colour contrasted mid sections have aged well. We noted no rips or tears or any major concerns, there were a few slight marks on the light colour of the seats but again, not a significant issue we think.

Carpet areas showed a few areas of normal wear but would benefit from a clean just to bring these back up to standard again. Over in the boot, rubberised boot mat was functional and showed a few indications of use.

Dashboard

The black dash appears in lovely shape with no cracks or scratches to report. The car is equipped with beautifully stylish gauges showing oil temp, water temp and fuel read. The gauges appear a little faded, as is typical on these cars, but didn't present a serious concern.

Mileage counter showed with ~44,001 miles at the time of our visit. Switches on the main dash facing looked great and added a lovely retro flare to the Alfa's cabin. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Alfa dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original wooden steering wheel shows in a good condition with signs of patina but in line with the quality of this car. Even with the wear, the wheel still felt good in its touch. Chrome support shows well and highlights further the great design features in the Giulietta. The branded Giulietta Sprint emblem in the wheel centre was a real highlight in this section.

The gearstick in the centre section showed well and without concern. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

A small car with big performance, the Giulietta Sprint is a captivating Italian classic.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started up nicely and we noted little concern looking over the dash area. The rev counter and oil pressure showed the dial needles moving when the Sprint was up and running. Take a look at the car and engine section which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the mechanical review video.

Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the Alfa start up from cold and take in the lovely sounds of the engine. We take the car through the 4 speed gearbox and go into further detail about the Giulietta Sprint, taking it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, Emmajane took us around some local roads, the drum brakes on all four corners felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. We heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues.

We cover off the underside of the Alfa's exterior in our Mechanical gallery section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself.

The Drive

The car drove very nicely with the revs responding well to a little throttle activity. Sounding great out on the road, its a car that really puts a smile on your face with its timeless charm.

Classic Italian styling that stands the test of time with its look and heritage. Head over to the on the road video to hear our thoughts on the journey and to see how the car performs.

Electrics and Other

The Alfa has limited electrical elements in the car. Dials and gauges were functional on our visit on the dash area although we were unable to test all the components.

Also included with the car is a spare wheel located in the boot. Emmajane lets us know that all electrical elements are working to the best of her knowledge, and she pointed out that the bonnet release needs to be operated by pliers currently, needing to be reattached to the lever.

History and Paperwork

Imported to the UK from the South African owners of this car, it has been here for ~4.5 years, and has spent much of that time in a museum on the Isle of Man, coming from a collection of classic Alfa's.

This rarely seen Alfa Rome Giulietta Sprint is a lovely example, finished in the original spec it. It has had a older restoration actioned on it some time in the past, but still presents in very good condition having been well cared for over time.

The car is currently on the Isle of Man, but Emmajane will be happy to deliver the car to Skelmersdale near Liverpool on a flat bed truck, for the buyer to then collect.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. Please note, the car may be in daily use, so the mileage may increase from that shown here - you can request an update check with us after you register your interest.

Hi Emmajane I second Monty55’s comments & request re: instruments, also please will you confirm that your offer to deliver to the UK mainland is included in the sale price please?
If not, please confirm cost to do this.

Hi AJS,

I can answer the question about collection, as mentioned in the listing, Emmajane has said she is happy to get the car to Skelmersdale near Wigan, at her cost.

Hi Kulraj many thanks. Please will you check in with Emmajane re: instruments & confirm…l guess she’s not been looking at the site for the past day.
Thanks again Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I actually visited this one, on the day the 2 gauges we couldn’t confirm were working were the oil temp and water temp, as we only ran the car up and down the road as per the video, as it isn’t one that Emmajane drove often at all compared to the later 105 series cars.

Hope that helps!

Best,

Hi Kulraj thanks again. My opinion is that these gauges are likely inop. as your road test, altho’ brief would have brought the temps of both off the min. stop but not to full working temp.

Emmajane, she’s a lovely example. Could you please confirm that all the instrument gauges work. I wasn’t quite sure after viewing the driving video as only the oil pressure gauge and rev counter were mentioned. Thanks.

Kulraj, I agree with AJS. I do think Trade Classics should have been more transparent on this issue and given the lack of response from Emmajane, in the query raised yesterday, I don’t think it would have been too difficult for Trade Classic to have called their client for clarification and reported back to the potential bidders.

Hi Monty55,

I’m really surprised to get this comment. We’ve asked the seller to respond (but they haven’t yet), in the video we say we’re not sure all the gauges are working, in the write-up we’ve said the same too, I’m not really sure how much more we could say. It actually might be the case that they are working, given for example oil pressure, speedo, rev counter, fuel warning light and level were all working.

We think we go above and beyond to document cars as best possible, so stand by this.

Kulraj, I’m now somewhat confused. In your earlier response you said: “I actually visited this one, on the day the 2 gauges we couldn’t confirm were working were the oil temp and water temp”. Now you seem to be saying that all gauges and instruments bar the water temp gauge do work, so which is it? I’m just concerned that if the car is to be driven away on collection. Non operating gauges would be a concern.

In addition, if the vendor has owned the car for 4 years I’m sure she would know which gauges are operational.

Hi Monty55,

If you read the listing etc, you’ll see the car has been sitting in a museum for some time, and we mention in the video on the road that it’s one the vendor hasn’t driven much/at all.

Kulraj, being in the trade it’s a given that I read the listing thoroughly. If the car has been driven at all by the vendor, she would know what gauges work and which do not. In most of your driving videos you are at pains to show working gauges, yet you didn’t with this car, so often times you need to look at what’s left out in the detail, to understand the likely facts. I’ve had significant experience with online auctions and most vendors are very quick to respond to bidders questions, so again, it is a bit odd the… Read more »

Hi Monty55,

Yep, as per what you can see in the videos and photos, and the write-up/answers I’ve given in the comments from my time visiting the car. I think my answer above clarifies it. Hope that helps, if not, apologies on my behalf, Emmajane may log on still and give her view.

Best,

Kulraj – Trade Classics
