The spirited all-aluminium, twin-cam, four-cylinder engine produces a legendary Italian soundtrack, beginning with a deep, throat-clearing growl from the twin-choke Weber carburettors at low revs. As the tachometer climbs, this throaty intake roar transitions into a crisp, metallic wail from the factory exhaust. Having previously owned an S4, Tony was drawn to the purity of this model's shape. He chose this South African import specifically for its solid, original condition and sympathetic restoration. Consistently garaged throughout his 11 years of ownership, the car was bought to be enjoyed and driven to local car shows.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14” Alfaholics Strada wheels are in excellent shape. Tony has pointed out that the nearside front wheel has a clockwise thread. The rest are counter-clockwise to loosen.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Firestone Multihawk tyres showing a spec of 175/70 - these are date-coded from 2007. They have even tread with no notable sidewall damage.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The exterior is in smart condition, with only minor signs of age on the nearside base of the wheel arch and no noticeable panel damage elsewhere. While the passenger doors are slightly misaligned, all panels fit flush to the body, and the shut lines remain acceptable throughout. Both doors open and close smoothly without sagging.

The underside of the car is in excellent condition, featuring a clean floor pan, chassis rails, jacking points, suspension mounts, wheel wells, boot floor, and engine bay.

Paint

The 'Rosso Farina' paintwork is highly consistent, showing very few chips or marks. Under direct sunlight, mild swirl marks are visible in the finish, but the overall presentation remains very strong.

There are minor cosmetic imperfections on the left side of the bonnet and where the top of the valance meets the bonnet, though both appear to be purely surface level.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are in good condition, showing only mild signs of age on the side windows.

While the lights and lenses present well overall, both wing indicators have faded. The Carello perspex covers are in good shape.

The chrome trim remains in good shape, and the bumpers fit flush to the body, with only a small blemish noted on the left-hand side of the front bumper trim.

Classic Jaeger gauges and a wooden wheel anchor the smartly preserved cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The vinyl seats are in excellent condition, showing no significant wear and providing ample support. The carpets are clean, tidy, and completely free of damp.

The boot is well-protected, featuring both a rubber mat and a carpet mat.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free of any notable issues, and features an eye-catching Alfaholics Pininfarina blanking plate and black leather padding.

While the centre console brightwork and dial bezels show a mild patina of age, the dials, controls, and switches remain in good condition and are reported to be fully functional.

The headlining, door cards, trim, and interior fittings are smartly presented throughout.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Equipped with a wood-rimmed steering wheel and matching wooden gear knob; appealing details that beautifully complement the interior's overall presentation.

Mechanics

The punchy twin-cam engine and slick five-speed gearbox deliver pure driving bliss.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts easily with the choke, requiring one or two pumps of the accelerator pedal to prime the carburettors after waiting for the fuel pump to prime. While running slightly lumpy when cold with a couple of minor pops, it settles quickly once warm, idling and running smoothly. The exhaust shows no excessive smoke, and the dashboard ignition lights remain off as they should.

The engine is well-preserved, featuring decent ancillary components and hoses, and has been upgraded with an electronic distributor. The car remained completely leak-free throughout our visit.

The five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly, providing a precise and direct feel. The clutch operation is also excellent, with Tony reporting satisfaction with its bite and feel.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride feels supple, with no unwanted noises at low speeds. The suspension absorbs road imperfections well and handles speed bumps without any clunks or squeaks.

Equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, the car pulls up smoothly and decelerates with no shuddering or squealing. It remains highly stable under braking. Notably, the rear calipers and pads were sourced from Alfaholics in 2020.

The Drive

Equipped with dual twin-choke Weber DCOE40 carburettors, Alfa Romeo's 1750 Twin Cam engine is a defining masterpiece of late-1960s Italian motoring. This free-revving unit is renowned for its glorious mechanical soundtrack and highly prized for its visceral throttle response & engineering purity.

Our test drive with Tony through the stop-start traffic of Ealing housing avenues demonstrated the car's urban capability and allowed us to monitor the engine on what was a very warm day. Tony reports that the car is equally well-suited for longer journeys, where it cruises smoothly with plenty of usable torque, performing effortlessly and remaining incredibly stable on dual carriageways.

He told us that the steering is light and direct, allowing the car to corner without any negative feedback. The engine is highly responsive, pulling strongly throughout the rev range and free of any unwanted noises or hesitancy.

Oil pressure sits at around 70 PSI on a cold start, settling to just under 50 PSI as the oil warms up and thins out. The engine temperature remained perfectly in the middle of the gauge throughout our visit, and Tony reports no issues with either reading during his ownership.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electric during our visit but Tony assured us everything was in working order.

The soft top is in excellent condition, with no notable marks or damage. It lowers smoothly without issue and comes complete with its matching hood cover.

History and Paperwork

Backed by restoration invoices, the car has had thousands spent on premium specialist parts.

Manufactured in South Africa in March 1969 and imported to the UK in 2006, the car has covered approximately 6,000 miles since its arrival. It underwent a series of sympathetic renovations, beginning with a mechanical overhaul by marque specialist Ian Ellis in 2009, costing £6,800. This was followed by a partial body restoration in 2013 by MGS Coachworks, totalling £5,600.

Throughout Tony's 11 years of ownership, the car has required minimal maintenance beyond routine mechanical upkeep - such as replacing the Bosch coil and various brake parts. It has been regularly serviced by a mechanic for periodic carburettor tuning and routine check-ups.

The history file is well-documented, containing many of the invoices and receipts from the car's 2008 renovation, including parts receipts from Alfaholics and Classic Alfa totalling £4,700, alongside additional invoices for hood repairs and replacement carburettors. The Alfa Romeo Owners Club has supplied a letter to confirm authenticity. The car is accompanied by two sets of keys and is fully exempt from MOT, road tax, and ULEZ.
