Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

The Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1600 is celebrated for its communicative chassis, mechanical symphony, and nimble handling.

As part of the iconic Alfa Romeo 105 Series, the GT Junior belongs to one of the most significant and influential sports car families in automotive history. Introduced in the 1960s, it completely redefined the formula for affordable high-performance vehicles, and cemented Alfa Romeo as a premium engineering powerhouse. By packaging world-class engineering into an affordable mass-production car, it proved that an everyday coupe could handle, accelerate, and sound like a genuine racing car.

It delivered so much excitement behind the wheel that it demanded matching aesthetics and design purity. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Bertone, it is universally admired for its proportions and minimalist elegance.

Technically advanced for its era, it featured servo-assisted disc brakes all round. Its wishbone front and coil-sprung live axle rear suspension perfectly harnessed the communicative chassis, mechanical symphony, and nimble handling to establish it as a formidable competition car.

Introduced towards the end of the 105 Series production run, the GT Junior 1600 model originally served as a tax-break variant, offering twin-cam thrills with economical benefits - but still delivering a sporting, stylish car with exceptional handling. Highly original cars are difficult to find, as owners frequently upgraded parts over the years. Trade Classics now offers you the chance to secure a well-loved, low-mileage, unmolested example in its intended left-hand drive layout.

Formerly owned by an Italian ambassador, this highly original 1972 GT Junior 1600 was purchased by the current owner in 1994. It spent decades in a warm, dry Mediterranean climate before the owner imported it into the UK in 2015. Believed to have had just two owners from new, the car is also believed to have covered only 49,673 kilometres.

This solid example is finished in grey with a black vinyl interior, and while it would benefit from a few cosmetic improvements, it remains complete and has received around £2,300 worth of work since 2015. Having recently undergone a light engine and brake re-commissioning, it comes complete with its V5, a collection of invoices, and its original owner handbook - with its last service carried out around 200 kilometres ago.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Theo the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The car enjoyed a charmed life in the sunny Balearic Islands before retiring to the peaceful Wychwoods.

As a passionate enthusiast, Theo bought the Alfa Romeo to be truly enjoyed, making the most of its capability and driver appeal during his time in Ibiza. The car meant the world to him, and, fully aware of its rare originality, he brought it back to the UK around 11 years ago to continue enjoying its charms.

A decline in health has meant the car has seen very little use in recent years, though it has been safely kept in garage storage and regularly checked over. It is for this reason that the car is now being offered for sale, with his daughter, Josie, managing the process. She would be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

While in need of a few cosmetic improvements, this highly original car has benefited immensely from spending the majority of its life in a warm, dry climate.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with original 14” steel rims, finished off with its original centre caps. They present well, with mild signs of age on a couple of them.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Goodyear Eagle tyres showing a spec of 185/70 - they are likely to be over 20 years old but show even tread with no significant sidewall damage.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

While the body has several minor marks, cosmetic scuffs, and light dents, the most notable damage is on the offside rear wing. An undated pro forma invoice shows that repairs were estimated at £1,200.

The doors open and close easily, and the seals provide a good fit, though the passenger door sits slightly proud. Additionally, the door wells are completely solid.

Its structure is solid, with no major issues found on the floor pan, chassis rails, engine bay, boot floor, jacking points, or wheel wells. The exterior panels fit flush to the body and are mostly free of major rust, though there is light surface wear on the roof above the rear window.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The distinctive 'Indigo Grey' paint is evenly applied and has a decent finish, though a mild haze is visible in direct sunlight and there is some lacquer damage on the offside front wing. The panels also show minor marks, scuffs, and chips, along with a few areas that have been touched up.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition with decent seals. The lights and lenses are smart, though there is mild fading on the nearside rear lens.

All the chrome trim is complete, correct for the model, and appears entirely original, showing some age-related wear on the trim and bezels. Both bumpers are securely mounted to the body and exhibit mild damage but no excessive corrosion.

image

Interior

The completely original cabin feels like a beautifully preserved time capsule, carrying its rich character with absolute grace.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in good condition and offer plenty of support.

The rubber mats are clean and tidy, with no signs of water accumulation.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard and facia look smart and present well despite a handful of minor flaws, including a small fracture above the binnacle and some aged trim on the glove box. All of the dials, switches, and controls look good and are reported to function exactly as they should.

While the headlining has a few superficial marks, the door cards and the rest of the interior trim remain clean.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Moto Lita wooden steering wheel sets off the cabin nicely, showing no marks, and the gear lever is in good condition, complete with a decent gaiter.

image

Mechanics

It represents the golden era of Alfa Romeo and stands as the peak of the brand's independent engineering.

Engine and Gearbox

The car fires up immediately, and all the ignition lights turn off once the key is turned. While we noticed an initial succession of mild pops from the engine, these stopped quickly and did not return. There was a little smoke from the exhaust, but nothing excessive. Following a 20-minute drive, we also filmed the engine and dashboard to demonstrate that the engine was running smoothly.

The engine itself presents well and shows signs of good maintenance. The hoses and ancillaries are in good condition, and the car did not leak any fluids during our visit.

The 5-speed manual gearbox operates smoothly, and there are no reported issues with the clutch.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension coped with the roads without any negative feedback, absorbing the surface positively. We didn’t hear any knocks or bangs from the wheels, and the car rode evenly and smoothly at higher speeds.

The brakes operated without issue while the car was on the move, and Josie did not report any pulling from the steering wheel when braking.

There was a little squealing from the brakes when setting off at low speeds and while manoeuvring the car in reverse, but this seemed to dissipate once on the move. Since our visit Josie has had the front calipers replaced and reports everything is working as expected.

The Drive

The driving experience of the Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1600 is defined by its mechanical melody, eager power delivery, and highly tactile driver feedback. The deep induction growl from the twin carburettors, a classic Italian rasp from the exhaust, and the intense sense of speed are exactly why this high-revving twin-cam engine rates as one of the most emotive automotive experiences.

The engine needed a good run to clear its throat, and with every passing mile, the car became smoother and more responsive as it warmed up. Once we found an open stretch of road, it pulled evenly with no splutters or hesitancy. Josie took us for a spin on behalf of her father and commented on how much fun the car was to drive, even at the modest local speed limits. The steering centres itself gently with no significant wobbles or vibrations, and as she worked through the gearbox, the short shifts offered a bit of a workout but remained a joy to use.

The compact dimensions of the car make it easy to place on the road, allowing it to carve through tight, narrow country lanes with absolute confidence and agility. The engine has seen recent attention, specifically to the dual Solex 40mm carburettors, and she has not reported any issues regarding oil pressure or engine temperature. While it performed faultlessly during the test drive, the car has lacked regular recent use, so it would be well worth conducting a thorough mechanical inspection.

Electrics and Other

The interior is entirely original, with the exception of only an aftermarket 12V socket fitted. Additionally, there is some corrosion on the lips of the fuel tank.

History and Paperwork

It has received regular mechanical attention over the years, and has covered a mere 1,200 km since its last service.

First registered in December 1972, this car was originally ordered in Italy by the Italian Ambassador to Madrid. Theo purchased the vehicle in 1994 with ~24,000 kilometres (~15,000 miles) on the clock and used it on the island of Ibiza. Kept as an occasional weekend car, it toured the island as part of a local motoring club, covering around 14,000 km before being imported and registered for use in the UK.

The car passed its first UK MOT in March 2015 with a recorded 48,854 km, and has covered only 1,200 km since. Around £2,300 has been spent during its time in the UK, with notable work including new front calibers in June 2026, a new clutch cylinder in 2020, a rear calliper overhaul in 2016, and new door seals & a carburettor tune in 2015. While the car has been in storage in recent years, it has just undergone a light re-commissioning by a former motor racing specialist, which included attention to the brakes, carburettors, and engine.

Along with a collection of invoices from Alfa Romeo and local specialists dating back to 2015, the car comes with its Spanish registration documentation and its original handbook. It was last serviced at 49,487 km, meaning it has covered only about 200 km since, and it is now fully MOT and road tax exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
