Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Many good things have come from Italy; fashion, architecture, design, and the Alfa Romeo Spider.

The Alfa Romeo Spider first made its appearance in 1966, but thanks to a combination of its twin-cam engines, five-speed gearboxes and that distinctive styling, it retained a steady demand. Alfa kept the car in production as its sole open-top sports car for three decades, until production finally ceased in 1993. With the exception of equipment and several facelifts, development was fairly minimal but it retained much of its driving experience characteristic of the original. A few more changes over the coming years kept the Alfa up to date with the current car trends until 1982, when another redesign of the Spider was introduced. In addition, the car had some cosmetic upgrades to the bumpers and the addition of a boot spoiler.

The model we have here is a 1984 car that was initially sold in the States. It came to the UK in 1990, and several owners have enjoyed it since then, each of who have wanted to experience the Italian classic.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Stuart the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Spider has been a fantastic car - it’s been great fun and a pleasure to own.

Stuart has owned the Alfa for ~4 years. As a classic enthusiast, he isn’t shy in tackling any mechanical work, and because of this, the Alfa has been well maintained, having whatever parts needed to keep it running just as it should.

With a considerable amount of parts replaced over the years, which are all listed on invoices in the paperwork section, Stuart has decided it's time to part with the Italian classic and concentrate on his other passion for classic motorbikes. He'll be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With lines and curves in all the right places, the Alfa Romeo Spider is a thing of beauty.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are thought to be the originals which are in good condition, with no noticeable damage or corrosion. The tyres are a matching set of Nexen SB-702 with a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the Alfa, the car is free from any dings or dents. The panel gaps look to be equal to the doors, bonnet and boot. There are however signs of corrosion in areas on the rear wheel arches, the nearside quarter panel just in front of the wheel arch and also the bottom of the b-pillar/top of the sill on the offsider. A replacement sill and quarter panel section are included with the sale for anyone wanting to take the car to the next level.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Ivory" (AR103), the paintwork presents in an even colour and finish across the car and is believed to be 95% original. There are age-related chips and light scratches across the car which is why in part it is believed to be original, mainly noticed on the top of the passenger wing possibly caused when people have been leaning across to work on the engine.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and side windows are in good condition and appear scratch-free. The seals look in good condition, and the plastic rear window is excellent due to its new roof.

The headlights, indicators and rear lights are all free from damage to the lenses, and the chrome work around the windows is free from tarnishing. The convertible roof is in excellent condition, having been replaced by Stuart.

Interior

Being converted to right-hand drive makes the Spider more appealing for use on the UK roads.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Alfa are in excellent condition with no real signs of any wear. Stuart reports that one has been replaced at some point, but the other is thought to be original. The door cards are also in good order, with just a small amount of cracking on the driver’s armrest.

The carpets are also in good condition, having been replaced a couple of years ago but would benefit from a light cleaning. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition with no cracks across the top, and this has been retrimmed.

The instruments are working as they should, including the three auxiliary gauges, which have healthy readings for the engine. The odometer shows a reading of ~46,452 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a lovely wood-rimmed item in excellent condition with no signs of wear. The horn is now operated by a red button mounted in the centre console.

The gear knob is also wooden but a slightly darker shade, and this is also in good order. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The revvy 2.0L twin cam engine was very advanced at the time due to its fuel injection system, giving good performance and decent fuel economy.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with a 2.0 twin cam, the Alfa engineers added fuel injection, improving performance, economy, and reliability. The engine fires up as it should with no hesitation. Stuart has carried out regular servicing and went that extra step of fitting a new clutch. Since then, the Alfa hasn't really covered a significant number of miles.

The gearbox has a smooth change when going up and down the gears, and no untoward noises are coming from the transmission, watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

Over the years, the dampers have been replaced along with other suspension and steering components, one of which is the addition of a power steering system, which makes city driving extremely easy. As a result, the car easily tackles uneven roads, and no knocks or bangs come from either corner of the vehicle.

In 2020 Stuart fitted a big brake conversion kit to the Alfa to ensure it would stop quickly when needed. The kit was purchased from Classic Alfa for £795.00, plus a set of pads at £115.00. These work as intended bringing the Spider to a stop in a straight line

The Drive

It's certainly a car to be enjoyed with the roof down, and the sound of the 2.0 litre twin-cam is a pleasure to listen to. The Spider comes into its own when you get it on the twisty bits with a nice positive feel through the steering wheel, which is lightened by the power steering system installed by Stuart.

Electrics and Other

Inside, the electric windows do operate but are a little slow. The switchgear does have some age-related wear but is said to be working correctly. However, one switch or switch blank is missing in the centre console's lower section.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

An extensive history file for an imported car suggests the Alfa Romeo Spider has been well maintained, it comes with a fresh MOT and some big mechanical jobs tackled in the current ownership to make it a nice runner.

This Alfa came into the UK in 1990 from the States, where it was converted from left to right-hand drive to make it more practical on UK roads. Over the years, several owners have had the pleasure of the Spider, most of which have kept the invoices for parts purchased, mainly coming from Classic Alfa, as you can see in the paperwork gallery. There are a substantial amount, all pointing towards a well-maintained vehicle when you look at the parts purchased.

For anyone looking to try out some Italian two-seater, open-top motoring, this 2.0 litre injection is a fantastic option to do just that.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Stuart, has the car been restored at all ?

If so do you have evidence of it in the history.
