Alfa Romeos are a legend - racing heritage, beautiful styling and a drive that engages like few others.

Since 1911 Alfa Romeo have been synonymous with iconic, high performance, racing and road cars. Winning the inaugural Grand Prix world championship in 1925 provided the platform for Enzo Ferrari to create the Alfa Rome “Scuderia” racing team in 1929 which went on to chalk up the most wins of any marque in the world.

The thoroughbred engineering and beautiful styling has underpinned a hugely successful and highly sought-after series of sports cars from the 1920’s to the present day. Characterised by lively, free revving engines, stunning looks, communicative handling and a blistering exhaust note, Alfa’s really are a driving enthusiasts’ car. The Alfa Spider debuted at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show and began a series of designs bearing the name.

This highly original Spider comes to auction with a very low mileage and excellent metallic blue paintwork over a black leather interior. Having been with its current owner for nearly 10 years, the car has been well maintained and presents beautifully. Like all Alfa Spiders before it, this model, a type 916, has all the hallmarks of a future classic. It represents a sound investment too with values, for good examples like this, now starting to rise.

It’s an Alfa – the styling, inevitably beautiful, works fantastically with the excellent metallic blue paintwork and black hood.

Wheels and Tyres

16-inch alloy wheels and Alfa centre caps are generally in good condition with only some minor kerb marks as shown in the photos.

The wheels are shod with 205/50/R16 tyres which appear in good condition and have plenty of tread remaining. View the photo gallery to see the details.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and doors, bonnet and boot and open and close cleanly and precisely. Panels appear straight and even with no apparent damage or distortion. The black hood is in good shape with only minor flaws and the open and closing mechanism works very well as can be seen in the exterior review video.

Paint

The paint on this car looks amazing – the metallic blue suits the classic Alfa lines perfectly and the finish is even and consistent right across the car. Being very picky there are some very minor scuff marks on the front and valances and some peeling on the edge of the sills, although this appears very much limited to the surface.

Overall, the paintwork appears pretty flawless. The photos and videos show just how good the exterior finish on this car is. Do take a look and judge for yourself.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in very good condition with no crack or significant scratching.

The perspex rear window is clear with none of the milkiness sometimes seen on these hoods and it only has one small mark as can be seen in the photographs.

Interior

Every inch an Alfa – an interior that feels like a modern sports car yet is true to the heritage and tradition of the iconic Spider range.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats present well with only minor wear to the drivers’ seat bolster as would be expected in a car of this age. Overall, the seats and carpets look great and reflect the very low mileage of this example. The seats are very much in keeping with the sporty, Alfa, styling and are firm and comfortable.

Dashboard

Beautifully clear dials and warning lights set deep in the instrument binnacle with white numbering contrasting against a matt black background. All look in great condition and reflect the sharp, sporty styling of this car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel, centre boss and badging are in great condition, complimenting the interior and exterior styling. The leather covered gear stick also looks great only showing wear consistent with the low mileage of this car.

Mechanics

The lively, flexible and urgent straight four delivers ~162BHP to the front wheels to give a factory specified, 0-60 in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 134MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

The transverse, 2.0L, 16 Valve, engine sits comfortably in the engine bay and looks every bit as good as it sounds. On our cold start the car fired up immediately and quickly settled down to a steady idle with no warning lights showing on the dash.

Suspension and Brakes

Disc brakes all round, vented at the front and solid at the rear, look great through the alloy wheels and we are assured do their job well. Independent MacPherson strut suspension delivers a compliant, well planted ride.

The Drive

On our test drive the low mileage on this Alfa really showed. The car was quiet, smooth, pulled well through all the gears and changes were precise and slick. Nic described steering that was intuitive and provided good feedback and the brakes pulled the car up cleanly, evenly and precisely.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials and gauges appear unbroken. Nic confirms everything works exactly as it should. The car comes with electric windows and a built-in CD player.

History and Paperwork

This is a fantastic example of the Spider JTS – very low mileage, great condition and a drive that’s difficult to match. Summer 2022 could be one to remember.

Drivers love Alfas – incredible style, great road holding, wonderful exhaust note and a visceral driving experience. Another 216 Spider in this condition, with this mileage, will be very hard to find. Looking for some sports car summer fun? This very original Alfa is an opportunity not to be missed.

The car comes with historic MOT certificates and the original service manual and handbook. Also included are maintenance receipts showing renewal of brake discs and extensive brake refurbishment less than a year ago and a new steering rack in 2019.
