Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Historic vehicles don't get much smarter than this Alvis Supercharged Special - this example is a page straight from the motoring book of history.

Alvis was a manufacturer of racing cars, aircraft engines, armoured cars and vehicles from the '20s through to '67. With a focus on the civilian market the 12/70 was born with only around 740 of these ever made.

This example is something special: supercharged; fine tuned; re-profiled and with great competitive history. A well known motor within the Vintage Sports Car Club circle, this hillclimb ready special is a 3 time Hulbert Trophy competition winner, built and developed by the previous owner to be a racing success.

A great example of real one-off special, this Alvis provides a real exhilarating experience and performs beautifully.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Saul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Hillclimb ready and well known for its competitive edge - this sporty motor has plenty to give.

Saul had the opportunity to purchase vehicle when the previous owner passed away. Coming from a great motoring heritage the 12/70 is really competitive in its class thanks to an engine rebuild and improvements over the years.

Saul lets us know, "The previous owner built this with one thing in mind and that was to be a class winning VSCC car. It would cost many thousands for something like this to be replicated now." Saul goes on to say, "The Alvis has had loads of racing success in its life and I have helped that with the addition of a new fuel tank for me to be able to use it on the road and in more competitions".

Saul adds, "I'm looking to sell as I'm funding another car as I have a few projects on the go at the minute, apparently you can only have so many cars!". He will be more than happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in a classic dark racing green - this 12/70 is a real head turner.

Wheels and Tyres

We love the smart black multi-spoke wheels, wrapped in Blockley 18" tyres and matched on all four corners of the Alvis.

The wheels are in beautiful condition and presenting really well - a chromed Alvis centre piece caps them off nicely.

Overall the wheels are in great condition and on our visit we noticed no apparent sign of scuffs or curbing issues.

Please check out our hi-resolution gallery for a more detailed look at these.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this 12/70 appears in great condition in line with the age and mileage of the car. The panels appear well aligned and the gaps and shut lines looking very good, as you would expect from a car as well maintained as this example.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

For the age and mileage of the car this is a really fine example, on our visit we didn't notice any issues with the paintwork.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Well maintained and cared for - this 12/70 shows its merits through the glass and trim sections.

The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks or discolouration observed during our visit.

Interior

Simple, clean and race engineered - interiors don't need to be fancy when you have a supercharged engine and an open road.

Seats and Carpets

Matching green seats kit out the cabin.

Showing overall in great condition - we just observed minimal wear on the flooring.

We did see some slight markings on the back of the drivers and passenger seat.

More details of the interior can be found in our image gallery.

Dashboard

Straight forward chrome finished dashboard gives the driver a display of the key features for the car.

Saul lets us know that to the best of his knowledge the gauges and dials all work as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is finished in a period themed wood effect with the condition reflective of the rest of the car - really good.

Please note that the Jaguar steering wheel centre cap in some of the pictures is not included in the sale.

Mechanics

The top speed on this car is significantly higher than the standard factory spec thanks to the added supercharger pushing out additional power.

Engine and Gearbox

A great deal of maintenance and upgrades have been put into the Alvis. The engine has been rebuilt and moved 16" back and several inches lower in the bay to provide better handling and performance.

The supercharged engine sounds lovely shifting through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

In order to make the car perform better and safer at higher speeds, the previous owner has upgraded the braking system with hydraulic brakes.

The car is ultimately designed for hillclimb racing, but it can easily be used on the road. The suspension setup has also been upgraded with a Hartford suspension setup installed.

Saul lets us know that the brakes are working well, as to be expected.

The Drive

The 12/70 is designed to be a race car and engineered for hillclimbing events, so this car is not short of power. Stiffened suspension gives the driver a great stance on the road with with the supercharger giving a great deal of added adrenaline to the drive.

Brilliant fun to get out and about in - with or without the fold down roof, this is a really well known car in the right circles and able to quickly turn heads wherever you go.

Electrics and Other

Saul reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

Refined, retuned and race ready - with just 2 previous owners this car is a piece of motoring history.

Historic vehicles don't often get much better, or well looked after than this Alvis.

We detailed the MOT certificates and receipts for work carried out in the paperwork gallery section, but if you'd like to know any additional information about the 12/70, then drop a message to Saul who would be happy to answer any other questions.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
