Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

If you're in the market for a family estate car with that extra oomph, then look no further than an RS4.

The mid-2000s is considered a glorious era for Audi, with a lineup that included the imposing R8, stylish TT, the roomy, the understated A8 and the ahead-of-its-time A2. Audi had each sector filled with panache and style. This, then, was a fertile time to release the 2nd generation RS4: the mid-sized saloons, estates, and convertibles that were unique in the market due to their combination of versatility and ease of driving with supercar dynamics.

Thanks to the huge grip provided by the 40:60 front:rear split Quattro all-wheel-drive system (the first implementation to deviate from 50:50), you can really enjoy the RS4's direct-injection V8. In addition to its excellent mid-range torque and balanced handling, the RS4 offers dependable traction in virtually any situation. Fitted with subtle flared wheel arches to house the classy 19" alloys, there is also a Lamborghini influence in the cabin.

The RS4 not only went well but also looked decidedly sporting.

Coming to market after over two and a half years with our vendor, this 2006 RS4 Avant benefits from having had the key known RS4 maintenance items addressed, making it a strong and confidence-inspiring car to own and use - carbon clean, de-flap, KW Variant 3 suspension, clutch, and more. What's more, it is finished in the desirable 'Daytona Grey Pearl Effect', with black leather wingbacks and a carbon fibre interior. It includes a significant amount of recorded spending in the paperwork and appears to have been well-maintained.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Tim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Quoted as being one of Jeremy Clarkson's “top three engines”, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I now fully understand!

As a huge Audi RS fan, Tim had never owned an RS4 but certainly wanted to experience one, especially after owning several new RS6s; he felt the RS4 was a model he wanted to experience.

Tim spent a lot of time searching for the right-spec RS4: importantly, he wanted an original one with excellent service history in superb condition to add to his already large collection. He knew buying the wrong car could be a costly exercise. During his ownership, the car has covered approximately 2,000 miles and has been stored in a dehumidified garage.

Tim would be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Bulging arches and a stunning colour choice ensure this RS4 stands out.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 19-inch Audi B8 RS4-style alloy wheels, a well-regarded OEM+ upgrade that complements the car well. Finished in silver, these are generally in excellent condition with just a couple of minor age-related marks.

A matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, all of which have plenty of tread remaining, keeps you stuck to the tarmac.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The flared wheel arches add presence, taking it from a normal-looking estate car to something extra special. As we look around the RS4’s body, all the panel gaps visually appear to match, and we didn't spot any dings or dents to point out. There is a small amount of blistering at the bottom of the driver's side wing.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Quite possibly the best colour choice for an RS4, the 'Daytona Grey Pearl Effect' paintwork is in excellent shape and presents very well indeed. There are a couple of stone chips, as you would expect for the age, and a small scratch was noted on the rear nearside quarter panel and also the edge of the bumper just below.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows in the RS4 appear to be in good condition, with no noticeable scratches. There are some minor chips to the windscreen in keeping with the mileage. The window rubbers do look in good order, apart from the nearside rear door, which has split a little near the back edge.

An optional extra sunroof was specified when the car was new, and this operates correctly.

The headlights, fog lights and rear lights are all in good condition, with no damage to the lenses.

image

Interior

It's the spec you all want - wingback seats and a carbon trim pack with a flat-bottomed steering wheel.

Seats and Carpets

Leather Recaro wingbacks with embossed RS4 logo are certainly the seats everyone looking for an RS4 wants, and we are pleased to say these are in excellent condition. There are minor signs of age on the driver’s bolster, but they are minimal and clearly appear to have been cared for when entering and exiting.

The rear seats and door cards are all in good condition, and, as mentioned, the door cards have the optional carbon fibre trim inserts.

The carpets look to be in good order, with no signs of heavy use. There is a set of fitted mats, of which the driver’s side has some wear to the heel pad, but it would be an easy item to replace.

Inside the boot is clean and tidy; there is a luggage net to help keep everything in place for a spot of spirited driving.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from any noticeable scuffs or damage, and it also has the carbon fibre trim. The instruments are working as you would expect, with no warning lights displayed, and the odometer shows ~92,131 miles covered.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original leather flat-bottomed steering wheel. This is in good condition with just some light shining on the rim, in keeping with the age and mileage.

The gear knob is in a similar condition.

image

Mechanics

You only have to hear it once - that's all it takes for you to become intoxicated with the glorious sound of the 4.2-litre V8.

Engine and Gearbox

The RS4 fires up perfectly with that distinctive V8 rumble that sounds fantastic.

The car had a carbon clean and manifold de-flap carried out in 2021. The clutch, along with the engine and gearbox mounts, CV joint, starter motor, and coolant tank, were replaced in April 2023 at ~88,249 miles.

Fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, the change is as you would expect and pulls like an absolute train all the way through the gears.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The original DRC system - a known weak point on these cars - has been removed and replaced with KW Variant 3 coilovers, widely regarded as the benchmark upgrade. These are set to factory ride height and a compliant road-focused setup.

Importantly, the original DRC components are included with the car, allowing full reversibility if desired.

The discs look in good order with no obvious signs of excessive wear, and bring the car to a stop in a straight line with no issues reported. The braking system remains OEM in specification but has previously benefited from caliper refurbishment, Brembo pads, braided hoses and fluid replacement.

image

The Drive

Sit in and buckle up, driving the 2006 Audi RS4 Quattro is a rare blend of everyday usability and serious performance. Its high-revving 4.2-litre V8 delivers explosive acceleration and a spine-tingling soundtrack, while the Quattro all-wheel-drive system gives immense confidence and grip in all conditions.

On a twisty B-road, it feels planted, responsive and incredibly fast point-to-point, yet it remains composed and comfortable enough to cruise or carry a family without fuss, making it one of those cars that feels just as happy being driven gently as it does being pushed hard.

The car is reported to start, run and drive exactly as it should, with no warning lights or known faults.

image

Electrics and Other

Inside the RS4, the switchgear is in good condition, and everything is said to be working as it should. The factory head unit remains in place, and you can connect your mobile phone via Bluetooth, making it handy for hands-free calling.

The switchgear appears to be original and is working correctly, with no issues reported. Also in place is the Factory RNS-E satellite navigation system with BOSE sound system. A discreet Bluetooth integration allows seamless phone connectivity via the CD changer input.

image

History and Paperwork

A well-documented history file suggests the RS4 has been consistently well-maintained.

Two keys are present, along with the original owner's manual and service book, several invoices for parts purchased over the years, and photographic evidence from a previous keeper, taken when he serviced or carried out work on the car.

Slowly but surely, RS4s of this age, condition, and spec are becoming quite difficult to find. Perfect for any enthusiast who wants to continue cherishing one of Audi‘s legendary RS estate cars.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off or does not have any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.
