Few British sports cars are as instantly recognisable as the Austin-Healey 100/6 - combining handsome styling, strong performance and genuine long-distance touring ability.

Introduced in 1956 as the successor to the original 100, the 100/6 brought a smoother six-cylinder engine and a more refined driving experience, while retaining the character and simplicity that made the earlier cars such a success. Today, they remain among the most desirable British sports cars of the era, equally at home on classic rallies, summer touring events or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon on the open road.

This particular 1957 BN4 comes from over 21 years with our vendor, it is made all the more interesting by its history, being one of the final examples built at Longbridge before production transferred to Abingdon.

Meet the owner

I first saw this car at Beaulieu back in 2003 and felt it would make an ideal project - buying it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made.

Having spent over two decades with the same owner, this Austin-Healey represents the sort of long-term enthusiast ownership that is increasingly difficult to find. Laurie purchased the car as a restoration project and has invested significant time, effort and money into its upkeep throughout his stewardship.

The decision to sell has been driven purely by reduced use rather than any fault with the car itself, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a well-loved example with genuine provenance and a fascinating story.

Finished in the classic and highly attractive combination of 'Healey Ice Blue' over 'Old English White', this Austin-Healey presents as an honest and well-cared-for example that has clearly benefited from years of enthusiast ownership.

Wheels and Tyres

One particularly interesting feature is the retention of its original steel disc wheels, a rarer sight today as many cars were specified with or converted to wire wheels over the years. The wheels present well and are fitted with matching whitewall bands that perfectly suit the car's period appearance.

We just noticed there is a small amount of light denting in the aluminium bonnet shroud, while the car otherwise presents well for its age and use.

Paint

The 'Healey Ice Blue' and 'Old English White' paintwork remains highly attractive and suits the elegant lines of the BN4 perfectly.

Looking around the car you'll see some paint imperfections and light blistering visible in certain areas e.g. the rear boot, wing seams together with some micro-blistering on the flat panels.

History and Paperwork

This Austin-Healey is accompanied by a substantial history file that helps document both its fascinating past and extensive maintenance record.

The accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms the car as one of the final BN4s built at Longbridge before Austin-Healey production moved to Abingdon, being built on 14/08/1957. Originally finished in black with a red interior, the car was exported new to Los Angeles, California in left-hand-drive form and without overdrive, where it was first registered in 1958.

At some point later in its life it returned to the UK, was converted to right-hand drive, fitted with overdrive and refinished in its current Healey Ice Blue colour scheme. The car also spent time in Ireland before being acquired by Laurie from respected restoration specialists Le-Riche Classics in Jersey.

The history file contains numerous invoices documenting the significant restoration work completed during current ownership, along with ongoing servicing and maintenance expenditure accumulated over the last 23 years.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

Hi Laurie. I know that AHs are low slung, but the exhaust does look somewhat close to the road. What is the gap and have you ever grounded the exhaust? Thanks

Hi There, Clearance is about 2.5 to 3 inches. I’m away at the moment so sorry can’t go and check. I have grounded it on a speed bump. Since then I have put new rear springs on and not grounded it since but I do not go over speed bumps.! The exhaust is not damaged. Best to view it if you’re not sure. Cheers Laurie
