Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

With room for the whole family and six cylinders powering it, it was an excellent choice for those seeking a sports car with some added practicality.

Launched in 1956, the Austin-Healey 100/6 BN4 was a four-seater roadster designed and built by Donald Healey. The aim was to create an excellent handling, fast sports car that could rival models from Jaguar and MG, all at a price more drivers could afford. Just one year later, the 2.6-litre straight-six received an improvement, gaining an additional 16bhp through alterations to the inlet manifold, the fitting of larger valves, and an increase in the compression ratio. This resulted in an impressive boost in midrange power at around 50mph, ideal for navigating B roads.

This example emerges from ~20 years of ownership with the vendor. With engine and sills addressed in 2014, the car is ready for use on weekends or track days, with potential for further improvement in the future. Finished in its Ford Colorado Red over Old English White colorway, we appreciate the character this car exudes, positioned as a drivers example.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Duncan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've thoroughly loved using this classic roadster for the past 20 years; it's brought me much joy over some ~23,000 miles.

This 1958 Austin-Healey 100/6 has been owned by Duncan for ~20 years. He's thoroughly enjoyed using it throughout his retirement on weekends. Duncan has invested significantly in the general mechanical maintenance of the car while preserving its authentic patina. Due to his age, Duncan now finds it challenging to use the car comfortably and is, therefore, considering passing on the joy this car offers. Duncan told us the car us is on the original pre 1962 "dateless" number plate.

The car comes well-specified with a dark red leather interior, a matching cream hardtop, tonneau cover, and wire wheels. To Duncan's knowledge the car is an original, home market, RHD car. Duncan will be more than happy to answer any of your questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Colorado Red over Old English White with matching leather interior – a classic and well known combination for this model.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with wire wheels with spinners, the wheels are presented in used condition, and they really need a deep clean/refurbishment. The tyres are Continental Contact, dated 2015, and appear to have a good amount of tread left.

Take a look at the media pack for a detailed view of the tyres and wire wheels; a full-size spare, along with an inner tube, can also be found in the boot.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the car looks used, as you would expect for a '50s classic that hasn't been restored. It would benefit from some attention in certain areas. Upon closer inspection, we noticed that the bodywork has some surface corrosion along with small dings and scratches, with the most noticeable areas being on the doors. Duncan told us the rear section was rebuilt due to rust issues.

Please take a close look at the condition of the bodywork in the media pack, where we have captured the exterior in great detail.

Paint

Finished in its Ford Colorado Red over Old English White, the condition is good for a ~65 year old unrestored car, it presents with signs of patina, as you can see.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows appear to be in good condition. The windscreen shows no major damage, and the sliding door windows are in good order (pictured in the history and paperwork). The rear window in the removable hard top also appears in good order with no major damage.

The brightwork on the car is in good condition overall, with only a small amount of age-related tarnishing. Once again, please take a look at the images to see these details up close.

Interior

The Austin-Healey's red leather interior certainly looks the part and adds to the charm of this very characterful car.

Seats and Carpets

The red-colored leather seats have maintained their shape well over the years. However, the two front seats are showing signs of age over the last 65 years, the driver's seat has a large split on the outside edge of the back as pictured.

A similar condition is evident in the leather door cards and carpets. For a comprehensive view of the cabin, we invite you to examine the extensive media provided.

Dashboard

The dashboard features a cream leather finish and showcases six gauges in front of the driver.

On this 100/6, the dashboard exhibits no significant damage, just some light cracking and dirt, as you would expect with a well-used example. There were no warning lights displayed, and the odometer read ~91,378 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A leather covered steering wheel is fitted, with another spare in the boot. This example is in well used condition, consistent with the mileage of this car. The metal gearstick seems to be in good shape. For a closer look, please refer to the image gallery to see the details.

Mechanics

Out on the road with the 100/6, the car is extremely fun, it's loud and low, turning heads wherever it goes.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.6-litre engine fired up from cold, and once warm, it idled smoothly. No untoward noises are coming from the engine bay, and everything appears to be in good order. The gearbox features an overdrive in 3rd and 4th gear.

We have a video of the Austin Healey's cold start, which can be viewed in the mechanical video section. The car started with ease and without any issues noted, although the bonnet latch requires some attention.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Austin Healey handles well, just as you would expect from a '50s sports car. During our short drive in the car, it behaved just as expected, coming to a stop without any issues as well. The Healey has disc brakes all round, which is unusual on these cars.

The Drive

The 100/6 provides an extremely fun and enjoyable driving experience. Duncan has thoroughly enjoyed using the car for short road trips around his hometown on sunny weekends.

The Austin Healey started without any issues on the first attempt. On the road the car felt responsive, exhibiting ample power to propel it along the road and through sweeping corners. We didn't notice any unusual noises from the engine or suspension.

Electrics and Other

Although we didn't test all the electrics during our visit, Duncan reports that, to the best of his knowledge, all of the electrical components are functional and operational, consistent with the overall condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

This Austin Healey isn't a garage queen; it's been enjoyed just the way it was built while being kept highly original by the current owner of ~20 years.

The car is coming out of ~20 years of ownership with Duncan. It boasts a wealth of originality and is equipped with the 2.8L straight-six engine, providing it with a bit more power than the earlier models. Additionally, the car includes a tonneau cover and a hard top.

Please review the paperwork and media that showcase previous MOT reports, servicing records, and the parts this Austin Healey 100/6 has received over its lifetime.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
