Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

For thrills and glamour, the Big Healey's power, curves and chrome are unbeatable.

As part of the export post-war drive, Austin Healey's success helped to lay the template of the traditional masculine British sports car. Powdered by proven and durable Austin engines, the simple styling with a poised stance remained unblemished throughout its lengthy production run, remaining as pure as the original design sketch. With each model progression, the power and technical specification improved, culminating with the arrival of the six-cylinder engine, instantly creating the legend of the ‘Big Healey’.

Soon finding a place in motorsports, thanks to its conventional engineering, robust construction, modest skill to fix, and modifying potential, the ‘Big Healey’ soon became a familiar sight in club competition hill climbs up to the world-famous Monte Carlo rally. Offering nimble handling and straightforward, easy-to-apply power, the Austin-Healey soon became one of the best-loved sports cars ever made.

The BJ7 MKII version of the 3000 is one of just 455 RHD home market cars produced. Retaining the Girling disc brakes and the option of a Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive, the BJ7 also provided the owner with some useful creature comforts such as wind-up windows and an easily-folded hood.

This November 1962 2+2 car is finished in Healey Ice Blue metallic paint with blue leather upholstery. Bought new by its original owner, the car remained in the family until 2007, when it was bought by the last registered keeper. Subject to a full body renovation in 2012 by respected specialists Healey JME, the engine and gearbox have also been rebuilt. Furthermore, the interior has been completely overhauled and almost every aspect of the mechanics, trim and cosmetics has seen attention. It retains the triple carb set-up from the earlier models and has several upgraded parts. It comes with an MOT to May 2026, spare keys and a box of spares.

If you're seriously in the market for a 'Big Healey' then this car could be the one for you as it also comes to market with a low reserve price.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Still turning heads at 63 years old, this Healey is also in excellent health - just look at the pile of invoices that come with the car.

The last registered keeper was a headmaster who simply enjoyed the challenge of restoration. Having owned the car for 17 years, and bringing it up to an impressive standard, it has travelled around 1,200 miles since its restoration.

In order to fund a new project, he sold to John, a specialist in well-cared-for British classics, earlier this year.

John will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The cohesive panel fit, smooth finish and solid structure are the result of a thorough and professional restoration.

Wheels and Tyres

The MWS satin-finish wire wheels are in excellent condition with tight spokes and show very little road wear.

The Vredestein tyres are around 10 years old and all have even wear and plenty of life in them.

image

Bodywork

The underside, engine bay, floorpan, boot floor, wheel wells and chassis rails all look in in solid order. The exterior presentation also conveys confidence; the panel fit is flush with a clean swage alignment from the doors to the rear wings. The body is free from dents or any discernible corrosion.

The bonnet and boot have the slightest of misalignments, but the shut lines are acceptable. Both passenger doors open and close with ease, although the internal driver's side door catch may need adjustment.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The Healey Ice Blue metallic paint has good coverage, with a smooth and consistent lustre.

There are a few minor blisters on the top of the nearside front wing and boot lid, and we noted mild blemishes below the upper door finishers. There are imperfections on the boot edge and a handful of minor chips on the driver's door edge.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass, lights and lenses are all in good shape with decent seals.

The chrome trim looks smart throughout and is well mounted.

The bumpers are in excellent condition and flush to the body.

image

Interior

Tastefully renovated over the past decade, the cabin's presentation displays great attention to detail.

Seats and Carpets

The blue leather seats with white piping are in excellent condtion and offer decent support, showing no signs of wear at all.

The carpets are clean and all free of dampness.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard and facia are smartly presented, free of wear or significant damage.

The controls, switches and dials present positively, and all are said to function as they should.

The cabin trim is in excellent condition, and the side windows both wind down smoothly.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden rimmed steering wheel and gear lever highlight the car's high level of finishing.

image

Mechanics

The Healey delivers its power in a measured and smooth fashion, thanks to the extensive mechanical work.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3-litre stright-six engine fires up immediately with no unwanted noises, and the dashboard warning lights remain in check. The engine idles smoothly with no hiccups and is free of any exhaust fumes.

The engine presentation is positive throughout; it has been historically upgraded with a later BJ8 engine, with triple HS4 carburettors from a BN7 model. More recently it has seen an engine and cylinder head rebuild to include an unleaded fuel conversion. As part of its recent renovation, it has an electronic fuel pump, oil pump, aluminium fuel tank, heat shield kit, a new wiring harness, a new full exhaust and a recent battery.

The rebuilt 4-speed gearbox has an electric Laycock de Normanville overdrive. The overdrive wasn’t tested, but it is said to operate perfectly with a smooth engagement. The gears engage with no jumps or slack, and the clutch operates with a good biting point.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension deals with the roads without negative effects, absorbing the ruts with ease and no unwanted noises. The components are in decent condition, and the rear suspension has a full poly bush kit.

The car brakes effectively, with no pulling on the steering wheel and we didn’t note any unwanted squeals or wobbles when the car slowed down.

image

The Drive

The car has a wonderful growl and superb exhaust tone; these torquey and robust engines are a joy to work through, and the under-stressed power plants make for an addictive driving experience.

The engine comes up to temperature with no issues, remaining fluid and responsive during our short test drive. There were no unwanted noises as we accelerated or slowed down, and the steering remained tight and slick. The ride is absorbent, with no knocks or bangs, holding the road well with smooth travel.

The engine maintained up to 60 PSI when in motion, and the engine temperature stayed level during the warm day. John has not reported any problems with the reliability, oil pressure or engine temperature while he’s been using the car.

image

Electrics and Other

The hood lowers in seconds and is very easy to raise - it is in excellent condition both inside and out.

The hood cover presents well and seals tightly.

History and Paperwork

Invoices go back to 1990, and include almost £40k worth of work since 2014.

First registered in November 1962, the first owner kept the car for 36 years. During this time, it was modified to accommodate BJ8 body panels and dashboard and also fitted with the BJ8 engine. Originally finished in black, the car appears to have been well-maintained and presented throughout its life. It featured in the Stephen Poliakoff film ‘Close My Eyes’ in 1991 and was retained by the first owner until it was inherited by his son in 1998.

It remained in dry storage for 9 years until it was obtained by its last registered keeper in 2007, who then went about comprehensively restoring the car. It was taken to Austin Healey Specialist JME Healeys in 2012, where the body was stripped down and rebuilt, totalling a cost of £21,500.

The binder of invoices starts in 1990 and includes maintenance and renovation work right up to 2025. On top of the body restoration, the car has invoices of over £17,000 spent since 2014, which include a gearbox and engine rebuild, a completely renovated interior, new hood, trim and cosmetic parts and additional mechanical maintenance parts.

It is naturally MOT exempt, but it does come with an MOT for peace of mind. It comes with several sets of keys, a box of spares and an overdrive maintenance printout. The car also retains its ageless 5 digit number plate.
