Introduction

It has been a great pleasure rebuilding this car completely in full rally trim - it had previously been rallied. The rebuild took several years and included sourcing rare parts, including a "works" roll-cage. Under my ownership it's competed in 5 rallies.

I have owned the car since Oct 2000, with rebuild having being completed in 2014. I am only selling as I am now too old to continue classic rallying.

This listing was written from information supplied by XXXXX after meeting XXXXX the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Market Auction

Ian, the seller, has created this listing themselves using our free Market Auction tool. Unlike our Curated Auctions, we haven’t photographed the car or written the listing, however we have completed 3 important security checks for your peace of mind.

V5C Checked

Ian provided a copy of the V5C logbook, which we verified against his photo ID for name and address confirmation.

ID Checked

Ian provided his photo ID, which we verified against the name and address on the V5C logbook.

Exterior

I love the overall look of the car.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are 10" Mini black steel wheels, but with 9 regular drilled holes around perimeter (similar to "S" wheels, but smaller holes).

Tyres are currently a mix of Dunlop, Falken and Zetum tyres (145 R10).

The car has two spare wheels, mounted on the rear seat base.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in good condition for its age. There's little rust apart from a small area on the o/s sill near the jacking point.

It is fitted with a "works" roll-cage.

The bonnet and bootlid are both lightweight fibreglass replacements. The bonnet removes completely on undoing four catches. The boot-lid hinges downwards as normal after undoing two catches.

The underside of the gearbox is protected by an "RAC" type sumpguard.

Paint

The car was resprayed (in original cellulose paint) during the rebuild.

The paintwork is in generally good condition

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is an original early screen and has a number of small surface scratches (up to 100mm long) but none that impede the driver's vision.

All other windows were made by the seller from 3mm perspex for lightness when rallying. All in usable condition

Interior

The vast majority of the interior is original.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in very good order for their age, apart from two small tears in the rear seat squab (max 40mm).

The driver's seat is a special (1960s) fibre-glass made seat with padding - has a short tear in the padding The padding was originally red, but has been overpainted in black, with some red showing through.

The carpets were replaced with non-genuine carpets. Reasonable condition, with one or two dirty marks

Dashboard

The dashboard and fascia cover are in original light grey material - there is one split approx 70mm long on the driver's side.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering real is a replacement leather-rim one, 340mm dia with 3 alloy spokes. The leather cover is worn. The gear-stick is an original "magic wand" type, straight, with an upturned end near the gear-knob.

Mechanics

The car has always been reliable, including in rallies!

Engine and Gearbox

The original 848cc engine was replaced with a 998cc one by the current owner in 2017, due to lack of power on rallies.

The current 998cc engine has a lightly modified cylinder head and runs on twin H1 SU carbs with "Downton" inlet and exhaust manifolds with an AEA731 rally camshaft, producing approx 60bhp.

The gearbox is standard and has never given any trouble.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is original apart from "Hi-lo" adjustable arms (to quickly raise or lower it for rallies etc). Shock absorbers are also adjustable.

The brakes are standard drum brakes front and rear, with main rear- front pipe run inside the car (to prevent damage)

The Drive

The car is nice to drive, with a smooth power delivery.

Electrics and Other

The standard electrics have been modified for additional gauges (amps/ rev counter (not currently working) / oil pressure / vacuum gauges).

Also wiring to the spotlights set in the front grille.

The main cable from the battery has been run inside the car, on top of the "transmission tunnel" to prevent damage during rallies.

History and Paperwork

The best thing about the history is its former and current rally preparation.

The car has been regularly serviced BY THE OWNER (too non-standard for dealers to service).
The car comes with a comprehensive file of invoices for numerous replacement or additional parts.
The car is for sale complete, as per the photos and description.

From Trade Classics:
This is a Market Auction listing, meaning we have not visited and photographed the car - instead the seller has supplied the images and written the description. However we’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID that matches the V5, and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPi that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

Viewings are welcomed, so please get in touch with us via the 'contact us' page - we just need to speak to you first on the phone, have you register on the site, and also send in valid photo ID before confirming a suitable time to visit.

Like all our auctions, if there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - the Buyer's Premium is not refundable in any instance, just like a traditional auction house.
