Introduction

Josh Sharples
Professional Consigner

The classic Mini Cooper - a British icon promising a great time behind the wheel with excellent investment potential.

The Classic Mini - arguably the most iconic British car known across the world. The Cooper models were created through the partnership of Mini's automotive designer Alec Issigonis, and racing car builder John Cooper. First launched in 1959, the Mini has implemented itself as one of the best selling British cars of all time, with more than 5 million examples sold worldwide by 2000. As well as this incredible feat, it was also named "European Car of the Century" by the prestigious Global Automotive Elections Foundation.

The Mark II, as seen in this particular example, featured a number of cosmetic changes from the Mark I, such as a redesigned grille and large rear window. This car comes to auction with a lot of work done to return it to its original beauty, being carefully restored with a rebuilt engine and respray.

This listing was written from information supplied by Josh after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is a great little car - I've owned Minis for over 40 years, so I know a good one when I see one.

Mike has been an avid classic Mini collector for the majority of his life, with three currently housed in his garage.

Mike enjoys restoring each vehicle to its original beauty, and alongside fellow enthusiasts he founded the CooperWorld magazine back in 1984.

Mike came across this particular Mini in 2017, with it half restored after having a respray and an engine rebuild by a previous owner in 2011. The engine has only covered around 2,000 miles since the rebuilt so is just run-in. His original intention was to use it for hill climbs across the country.

Unfortunately, due to COVID Mike was unable to undertake the hill climb events, so he believes it is now time to part ways with the car, so someone else can enjoy it as intended.

CONTACT OWNER

Exterior

Finished in Island Blue, this particular example looks fantastic in every light and is a certain head turner.

Wheels and Tyres

The 10" wheels are fitted with Yokohama A008, which are in excellent condition.

There is very minimal damage to the wheels, but please have a browse through the galleries to have a look for yourself.

Bodywork

The body work is in lovely condition, with Mike informing us that the previous owner completed a lot of metal work to return it to the condition it is in. Since owning the car, Mike has touched up certain areas to ensure the condition remains consistent across the car.

The fitment of the panels and door are good, with Mike adjusting the doors so they fit perfectly within the frame. Mike has also fitted a correct rear enclosed boot lid, and all of the above shut and close easily. The roof is original, and the car is fitted with black Group 1 arches.

Paint

The Island Blue paintjob, only found in the MKI and MKII Minis, appears to change colour depending on the sunlight, and this is in great condition thanks to the respray completed by the previous owner. There is no obvious signs of heavy road use such as stone chips and other marks.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears in great condition too, with no clear scratches visible. The rubber surroundings for the windows have been replaced in the last 5 years, and these remain in good condition.

We have taken photos of all windows for you to assess the condition for yourself - please find these in the external gallery.

Interior

The restored interior looks great - the new carpets and seats still retain the original feel of the cabin.

Seats and Carpets

Mike has sourced and fitted two front seats, and they appear in good condition. Mike informs us that the rear seats are original, and other than a blemish on the right seating position, they appear in good condition too.

Mike also replaced the carpets with a £500 set, which came with clips to fit with the original clips on the floor of the car. It also came with the correct rubber, and it was fitted by professional carpet specialists to ensure the fitment was of top quality.

There is some corrosion on the seatbelt buckle, which can be seen in the interior media gallery.

Dashboard

The dials reflect the originality of the car and are a pleasing aspect of the attention to detail that the previous owners have maintained.

This speedometer and the other dials work as expected.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear knob appear in good condition, with only little age related marks visible on our trip.

Please browse through our interior gallery to gain a better understanding of the condition.

Mechanics

With a new 1300cc engine, gearbox and more, this MKII has had an intensive mechanical upgrade.

Engine and Gearbox

Originally fitted with the factory 998cc engine, a previous owner replaced the original block with a quicker more powerful 1300cc engine in 2011 due to the previous engine being blown.

This new engine has only recently been 'run in', after doing approximately 2000 miles. To maintain performance with the new engine, Mike fitted new carburetors, replacing the original 1.25inch ones with the larger 1.5inch. Mike informs us that every mechanical component of the car has been thoroughly checked and replaced if necessary, and everything in the engine bay is as original as possible. He also tells us that the car drips no oil.

The engine started with no issue on the cold start video, which can be found in the Mechanical Review video.

The gearbox has been rebuilt using BMC old parts, with the car now fitted with a 4 Synchro gearbox as opposed to the 3 Synchro it had originally.

Suspension and Brakes

All of the hydroelastic suspension has been checked, as well as all of the points where it goes to the front hydroelastic system itself, and Mike assures us that during these tests there was no evidence of leaking which is common for these Minis.

It has Cooper S brake system fitted on the front, as well as the Cooper S servo system which comes with a bigger brake master system, and during our On The Road video Mike assured us that they work as expected.

The Drive

Well, it’s a Mini – the drive is guaranteed to make you smile and it certainly worked for us. The car pulled away at ease, accelerating without an issue. The gear changes were smooth, and the steering performed as expected, with the car not veering to one side, should the hands be taken off the wheel.

Electrics and Other

It has been fitted with a new battery during Mike's ownership since 2017 - he also tells us that all other electrical components, such as the indicators, work as expected. Mike told us a right hand fuel tank has been fitted to increase its range.

History and Paperwork

Great engine, great interior and low mileage - this is an opportunity to own an impeccable example of Britain’s motoring heritage while having heaps of fun at the same time.

This car has been garaged for the whole time Mike has owned it, with very few miles put on it other than to ‘run in’ the new engine. It has had a lot of work done to it to make it one of the best examples of the MKII Mini Cooper found on the market. The respray completed by the previous owner still looks great, and the new seats and carpets makes the car like it was back in the 60s. The only thing that this car lacks is the paperwork. As you can see in the media gallery, there was no service book available on our visit, with the only paperwork available being the MOT certificates from 2008 onwards, and some invoices for the work done on the engine.

Mike has told us that he will ensure the car has a new MOT before the new owner collects the car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Michael, Would it be possible to restore the original wheel arches, if the Black ones were removed ?
