Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

Rare, Irish-built automatic Mk1 Mini: a solid, charming, and highly usable ongoing project.

Alec Issigonis’s affordable small car for BMC was truly innovative, using front-wheel drive and a space-saving transverse engine layout. More than that, it was incredibly entertaining to drive. The original Mini boasted cutting-edge packaging, cheeky styling, and superb road manners. Such was the inherent 'rightness' of the original concept, that it was cemented in history as the blueprint for the modern front-wheel-drive car.

While the Mini was always designed to be the ultimate city car, the introduction of an automatic option in 1965 added a brilliant new dimension to urban driving. Today, finding a functional four-speed AP automatic is incredibly rare. What makes this late Mk1 1967 example even more special is its history: it’s a rare, Irish-assembled car, built by G.A. Brittain in Dublin using locally-sourced components such as glass and tyres.

Imported into the UK in 2017, this solid Mini comes to market after almost a year with our vendor. It's finished in a timeless grey with a contrasting brown interior. It presents smartly, though does require a handful of straightforward finishing tasks to bring it up to its full potential.

Inside, the cabin offers several tasteful, period-correct fittings. The exterior is enhanced by Cooper steel rims, and while it benefits from a few fully reversible engine upgrades, the car successfully retains its quintessential, base-model Mini charm.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Henry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Smiles everywhere; Driving a Mini makes people happy!

Henry is a professional watchmaker by trade and felt this classic Mini was the perfect accompaniment to his craft. Having purchased the car in July 2025, he initially used it on a regular basis, though it has seen less use in recent months.

Drawn to its engaging driving experience, excellent economy, and analogue charm, he is now reluctantly offering the car for sale to free up funds. Henry will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Smartly presented in grey, with a contrasting white roof, the look is set off by the cooper rims.

Wheels and Tyres

The 10” deep dish powder-coated LP883 Cooper steel rims are in good shape. They are finished with a set of chrome hubs, which show mild signs of age but generally present well.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Yokohama A-008 tyres showing a spec of 165/70. These are date-coded from 2008 and show even wear.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The exterior panels are free from physical damage, though minor rust is beginning to form under the paint on top of the offside wing near the headlamp. Mild ageing is visible along the front wing seams, accompanied by a handful of minor under-paint imperfections elsewhere on the body. While the panel alignment and shut lines are generally good, both passenger doors need adjustment as they currently require extra force to close properly.

Overall, the vehicle is structurally sound. The underside shows a few spots of corrosion, primarily beneath the driver’s side footwell. While the subframes are in good condition, they exhibit light surface rust. The wheel wells, engine bay, and boot floor are solid.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The Grey paintwork features consistent coverage and a healthy gloss, though light swirl marks are visible under direct sunlight.

The finish shows a few minor imperfections, primarily mild orange peel, isolated paint reactions, and the occasional run, though it remains largely free of typical road wear. Additionally, the paint on the windscreen scuttle panel shows signs of fracturing.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are in good condition overall, and the headlights have been upgraded to Quadoptic units. While the rear lenses remain in good shape, their seals are showing signs of wear.

The chrome trim is well-preserved and appears correct for the model. Aside from some corrosion developing on the rear bumper over-riders, both bumpers look smart, present well, and are securely mounted.

image

Interior

The charming cabin features period-correct fittings and requires only a few minor electrical finishing touches.

Seats and Carpets

The brown seats are in good condition, exhibiting no significant wear.

The carpets are complete throughout and entirely free of damp, though some superficial marks are present on the passenger side.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is tidy and presents well. It features an aftermarket 'Nippy Cars' dash pod housing a non-functional speedometer, and the oil pressure gauge requires reattaching. All other gauges and controls operate exactly as they should.

The door cards are in good condition, noting a minor repair to the driver's side pocket. While the headlining is free from damage, it would benefit from a light clean. The remainder of the interior trim is generally in good shape, with only a mild crease noted on the dashboard lining.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel has been fitted; it suits the cabin and requires a centre cap to complete the look. The original factory wheel is included in the sale. The gear selector is original and shows a lovely, age-appropriate patina.

image

Mechanics

An eager engine delivers a raw, engaging, wonderfully nimble drive with smooth transmission.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up effortlessly, running smoothly without any unwanted noises or vibrations. No fluid leaks were observed during our visit, and the dashboard warning lights remained off too.

The exhaust system is heavily corroded and requires replacement. Notably, there is minimal exhaust gas emitting from the tailpipe, which strongly suggests a gas leak further up the system.

The engine bay presents well and shows clear evidence of regular maintenance, including new spark plug leads and an upgraded electronic ignition system. The cooling system has been overhauled by Henry, and the vehicle benefits from an upgraded electronic ignition system, a new aluminium radiator, and updated hoses. Please note that the battery was found to be weak on the day.

The AP four-speed automatic transmission operates smoothly, engaging gears efficiently and providing a responsive kick-down function.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The Mini offers a characteristically pleasant ride; the suspension is firm and generally free of squeaks or significant knocks at low speeds. It absorbs road imperfections well, remaining compliant over smaller bumps. We experienced no thuds, nor was there any scraping or unwanted contact with the ground during the test drive.

The brakes offer a light and direct pedal feel, though they do require firm foot effort given the era-specific four-wheel drum setup. That being said, they perform entirely within expectations for a Mini of this age and slow the car down safely with no reported issues.

image

The Drive

The 850cc engine is a strong little unit, feels very eager when pulling away, with the unexpected sound of the smooth and consistent whirring of the automatic transmission at work.

Best described as a raw and engaging, if somewhat leisurely drive, the car proved perfectly suited to the country lanes around Henley and would be equally at home in urban environments. The automatic gearbox makes it an ideal companion for stop-and-go city traffic.

The car delivers confident, firm cornering and feels remarkably tight. The ride strikes a good balance, successfully blending road-holding capability with passenger comfort. There was no high-pitched whining, humming, or clunking from the gearbox. Furthermore, the steering proved to be smooth and highly responsive, providing a sense of complete control akin to a go-kart. Interior acoustics are notably good, aided in part by an upgraded carpet underlay.

Henry has dedicated significant time to maintaining the engine, including a comprehensive overhaul of the cooling system within the last few months. While an exceptionally hot day paired with several short journeys caused the temperature gauge to read high during our visit, Henry assured us that it returns to its normal operating range during longer, sustained runs. He also noted that oil pressure has remained consistently healthy with no issues to report.

image

Electrics and Other

Henry assured us that everything works, apart from the speedometer as far as he was aware.

The car is fitted with seatbelts and an operational heater.

History and Paperwork

Since it was imported, the Mini has received engine, steering, and light cosmetic maintenance.

Assembled for the Irish market by G.A. Brittain in Dublin from a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kit, this Mini was first registered in September 1967. It remained in Ireland for half a century before being imported to the UK in 2017 and has covered around 500 miles since then. While in the UK, it has been cared for by two previous keepers who addressed the cosmetics, steering, and engine maintenance.

Henry acquired the car in July 2025 and immediately upgraded its reliability, fitting an aluminium radiator, new hoses, an AccuSpark electronic ignition system, and upgraded spark plug leads. A new rocker cover has also been installed, and the original is included in the sale. The car comes with a photocopy of its Irish Registration book and licensing booklet, its original handbook, a selection of recent invoices, and a historic MOT certificate. It is both MOT and road tax exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Henry. Have you had any overheating issues with the car as the temperature was high and having an Aluminium rad should sort this? Has the car broken down on you? If so what was the issue?
Do you have the centre cap for the steering wheel?
Apart from the headlights not working and oil gauge missing are there any other electrical issues? I understand it will need the battery replacing. Is there any rust evident that needs addressing? How old are tyres? Apart from an exhaust system does anything else need replacing to be able to use the car regularly? I’ve owned many classic cars so do understand there are pitfalls and regular maintenance is key to reliability. Many thanks. Harvey.

Thanks Henry. Does the original 2 bar steering wheel have the centre cap included? Did the headlights operate correctly on high and low beam when you bought the car? Are there any other spare parts to come with the car other than the old steering wheel, rocker cover and oil pressure gauge? Is the carburettor an original SU 11/4” or larger? I understand the exhaust system is badly corroded so would probably look to fit an RC40 exhaust system to replace the rusty one. Are the fumes entering the cabin with the windows open during driving? Thanks again Harvey.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
