Introduction

Ashley Dawson
Professional Consigner

Few classic cars embody pure British motoring charm quite like the Austin Mini 1000.

By the early 1970s, the Mini had already cemented its place in automotive history, adored for its compact proportions, lively handling, and unmistakable styling. The 1000cc variant delivered just the right balance of practicality and sprightly performance, making it one of the most popular and enjoyable versions of the entire Mini lineup.

This 1973 example beautifully captures that spirit. Finished in an eye-catching green with a matching period-styled cabin, it presents as a wonderfully characterful classic that retains the simple, honest appeal the Mini is so loved for. Clean, tidy, and full of charm, it stands as a lovely representation of the model’s golden era.

Coming to market after ~2.5 years with our vendor, this Mini has clearly been cherished. It's clear to see that it has been restored with care. The paint, chrome, and brightwork all appear tidy, and under the bonnet the 1-litre engine presents well, a reassuring sign of regular attention.

A charming, usable classic with great visual appeal and classic Mini character throughout, it’s ideal for enthusiasts seeking a MKIII that’s ready to enjoy.

This listing was written from information supplied by Ashley after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve really enjoyed owning this little Mini, but it’s time for someone else to appreciate it as much as I have.

Paul has been the custodian of this charming 1973 Austin Mini 1000 for the past ~2.5 years. The car underwent a restoration in 2015 under previous ownership, and since then Paul has focused on regular servicing and general upkeep. He tells us the Mini has been garage-kept throughout his ownership and brought out only on good, dry days. A clear sign it has been cared for rather than simply used.

Paul is now ready to pass it on to a new enthusiast who will continue to enjoy and cherish this lovely classic.

Paul will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Mini’s iconic silhouette, finished in ‘Almond Green’, has real character.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mini sits on original-style steel wheels in 'Old English White' with chrome hubcaps, all of which present very smartly with a bright finish.

The tyres appear in good condition with usable tread and even wear, ready for the road.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork looks straight and tidy, with good panel alignment all around doors, bonnet and boot all open and close as expected.

Thanks to the earlier restoration, the exterior retains a sharpness and solidity that gives confidence. We didn’t spot any notable dents or structural concerns during our time of the visit.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in a rich, classic shade of 'Almond Green', the paint presents with an attractive gloss and uniform coverage. It’s clear the car was properly refinished during its 2015 restoration.

While a few very minor marks may be visible upon close inspection, the overall impression is excellent. A bright and well-kept finish that suits the Mini perfectly.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

All glass appears in good, clear condition, free from cracks or significant scratching.

Chrome trim, including the grille, bumpers, door handles and window surrounds, presents nicely with a strong shine.

Rubber seals also appear tidy, consistent with a well-maintained and garage-stored example.

image

Interior

Inside, this Mini 1000 presents with a beautifully refreshed cabin that perfectly balances period character with restored condition.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in lovely condition, upholstered in a classic 'Dove Grey' and Green vinyl with green piping that complements the exterior beautifully. They show minimal signs of use and remain supportive and tidy throughout.

The carpets were replaced during the restoration and still present very well, clean and neatly fitted, with no major marks or wear visible.

Thanks to the 2015 rebuild, the interior feels clean, bright, and true to the era, offering that unmistakable cosy Mini atmosphere.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard retains the classic central binnacle layout, finished cleanly with no cracking or fading. Switchgear, vents, and trim all appear well-preserved and tidy.

The painted metal surfaces maintain a fresh look, contributing to the overall impression of a smartly restored cabin.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original-style two-spoke steering wheel presents in good order with only light patina.

The gear stick and its surrounding trim also appear clean and functional, with the selector engaging gear positively exactly as expected from a well-cared-for classic Mini.

image

Mechanics

Mechanically, this Mini presents exceptionally well thanks to its comprehensive 2015 restoration.

Engine and Gearbox

The original 1,000cc engine was fully rebuilt by Coventry Classic Minis during the restoration in 2015, and the result is still evident.

The engine bay is spotless, the unit fires up without hesitation, and it performs faultlessly out on the road.

The gearbox was rebuilt at the same time and continues to operate smoothly, selecting gears cleanly with the familiar, mechanical feel of an early Mini.

Under the bonnet, all ancillaries present in excellent condition. Components such as the clutch and brake master cylinders were stripped, cleaned and zinc-plated for longevity, and there is no visible corrosion within the engine bay, a testament to the quality of the restoration work.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The underside reflects the same high level of work. The suspension components both front and rear appear almost new, with clean surfaces and no signs of age-related deterioration.

As part of the restoration, the front brakes were upgraded to Cooper S specification, offering significantly improved stopping power over the standard setup. A worthwhile and desirable enhancement for safety and drivability.

image

The Drive

Light, lively, and full of charm, this Mini delivers the joyful driving experience the model is celebrated for.

The rebuilt engine still has a crisp, eager nature, while the fresh suspension and upgraded brakes contribute to a confident, positive feel on the road.

Paul the owner describes it as an immensely fun car to take out on good days. Agile, cheerful and guaranteed to turn heads wherever it goes.

image

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electrics during our visit but Paul told us everything works as expected.

The wiring loom was retained during the 2015 restoration but fully inspected, cleaned and refitted as it was found to be in serviceable condition.

The ignition system benefits from an upgrade to electronic ignition, improving reliability and ease of starting. A new battery was fitted during the rebuild and a battery immobiliser cut-off switch has been installed for security.

Overall, the electrical and auxiliary systems reflect thoughtful restoration work and continued careful ownership under Paul.

History and Paperwork

This Mini 1000 comes with a reassuring and well-documented background, reflecting the care and investment poured into its restoration and preservation.

With only a small number of owners throughout its life and long periods in dry storage, it stands as a cherished example of a fully rebuilt classic that has seen gentle, considered use since completion.

A comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration was carried out in 2015 at a cost of around ~£12,500, spanning approximately 14 months to ensure the car was returned to an exceptionally high standard, during which the engine, gearbox, braking system and many ancillary components were fully rebuilt or renewed. The paperwork on file traces this work in detail supported by its MOT history. The Mini’s provenance is refreshingly clear. Today it is presented as an excellently restored and carefully maintained example, ready for its next owner to enjoy.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
