Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The Bentley T1 offers a combination that no other cars from the era could match - oozing quality and style.

The Bentley T-Series was first announced and displayed at the Paris Motor Show in October 1965, and was ultimately a Bentley badged version of the totally redesigned Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. The 'T' featured independent suspension on all four wheels with automatic height control according to loading, disc brakes on all wheels, a triplicate hydraulic braking system that also supplied pressure for the self levelling suspension, new and lighter power steering, improved automatic transmission, eight-way adjustable electric front seats and a larger fuel tank. With a redesigned cylinder head, the Bentley T1 could reach 118mph.

This Bentley T1 is coming to market from a whopping ~26 years with the owner and has only covered ~40,000 miles during Peter's ownership. It comes with some history that details upkeep and maintenance of the mechanical aspects of this luxury cruiser, most of which has been carried out at his nearest local main dealer - Broughtons of Cheltenham.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Peter hasn't failed to have the car serviced at Bentley's Broughtons of Cheltenham over his ownership.

Peter purchased this car back in 1997 to purely enjoy with his family on road trips across the UK and the continent. Having been a Bentley fan for many years this was his first dive into classic ownership and has thoroughly enjoyed the previous 26 years.

When Peter first purchased the car in '97 he had a complete rebuild carried out, addressing the front lower suspension ball joints, hydraulic pressures, front brake discs, hub bearings, repainted hub assemblies, front brake pads, all hydraulic hoses, rear brake pads, de-glaze rear discs, handbrake pads, handbrake linkages, reservoir glass, replace front sub frame pan-hard rod bushes, adjustments to the steering box, replace the temperature gauge sender unit, and fitted a new exhaust tail pipe.

As well as the rebuild, Peter has had the car converted to offer a dual fuel option, meaning the T1 runs on both LPG and petrol. He had the car completely resprayed from its previous Astrakhan paintwork to Brooklands Green.

Peter is only selling because his family holiday habits have changed - they used to travel more widely on the Continent (the car has been through Spain, France, Germany, Austria and Italy) but now they tend to be mainly in their holiday home in SW France.

Peter will be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Delightfully understated in the best traditions of British design - the Bentley T1.

Wheels and Tyres

The chrome wheels finished with a Brooklands Green and cream pin stripe design gives the car a touch of character. On this example, the wheels appear well cared for, with no sign of any obvious damage to any of the hubs from our observation; just some very light marks.

The wheels are fitted with Marshall Radial 857 and Falken FK-07J's tyres and these appear to also be in good condition, dated 2020 with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the outer sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Bentley looks in good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align very well. During our visit we didn't spot any obvious signs of damage - upon closer inspection the drivers door, rear O/S arch, and rear N/S door do show signs of wear.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Peter decided Brookslands Green would suit himself and the T1 far better - so a respray was actioned in 1999.

We did notice the odd very small area of scratches and some light stone chipping to the front bonnet, however, you'll have to get really close to notice these. As mentioned, we noticed a slight area of wear to the drivers door, rear O/S arch and N/S rear door, under the rear arches a small area of corrosion is starting to form; you can see these small defects in the photos and video below.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this T1 example looks great and in line with the ownership, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The chrome bumpers, grille, door handles, and window surrounds all look in good condition too.

Please take a look at the exterior photos to see these details in up close.

Interior

The extremely comfortable T1 is equipped to the highest standard - a very pleasant place to spend any amount of time.

Seats and Carpets

Lavishly equipped with grey leather seats which have held their shape very well over the years, as you would expect for Bentleys quality control standards. There are some light signs of age on the seats in terms of the expected creasing and cracking to the leather that you would expect from a ~54 year old example.

A similar story is told with the door cards and carpets, a deep clean to the leather and carpets would benefit the car.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in a dark gloss wood finish and presents three large black gauges in front of the driver, with numerous controls layed out clearly.

The dashboard in this T1 shows some light wear and cracking the the top shelf.

With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~46,175 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Bentley wheel is fitted, with a black grip. The original steering wheel presents in good condition, the black automatic gear selector looks good too.

Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Powered by the L-Series V8 engine, the Bentley T1 is marvellously relaxing and superbly refined.

Engine and Gearbox

Equipped with the mighty 6.2L block, on the day of our visit we started the car from cold, and it performed well out on the road - the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Peter reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth automatic gearbox powering the wheels.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around town, and for a closer look underneath the T1 and the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provided a smooth journey around the roads of Bristol.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a Bentley from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

A luxurious drive awaits within this T1. Peter has loved using the car for long road trips around the UK and continent during his ownership - he comments on how the car is easy to manoeuvre, even round the tight roads of Bristol.

The Bentley T1 fired up the first time with no issues to report.

On the road with Peter, the car felt tight, it had plenty of power to push it along the road and round any corners. We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Peter reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The car has a Alpine CDE-111R stereo unit fitted.

History and Paperwork

Coming out of ~26 years of ownership, this Bentley T1 offers you an awful lot of car for the money - ready to be enjoyed and cherished this summer.

The car has a lot of originality and an impressive amount of history. The 6.2L engine offers a great amount of power while giving the driver and passengers an extremely luxurious ride. The car comes with a jack, spare tools, various oils and fluids, spare belts, and LPG European attachment converters. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing and parts this T1 has received over its life, also see the magazine article where this exact model was features in Popular Classics September 1994 issue.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
