Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The Arnage is the very definition of a 'Magic carpet ride', a luxurious carriage.

The original design brief for the Red Label Arnage was a tall order. The chassis needed to be able to deal with both performance and comfort without sacrificing an ounce of the expected build quality of the brand. Not only that but it all came from an extensively developed version of the original Bentley V8, rather than the BMW engine which should allay any fears that it is not a real Bentley. Packed with comfort, Connolly leather and craftsmanship, the ~400BHP of turbocharged horses also provide a genuine urge that is perfectly managed by the engine and ride management, to appease the enthusiastic driver if needed.

Finished in a beautifully suitable "Peacock Blue" hue, and complemented with a magnolia leather interior with lashings of wood, this 2001 model is fully equipped from the factory including its original boot-mounted umbrellas. With just 4 owners and a recent 4-year spell in dry secure storage, the car also comes with a full year's MOT.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Used previously by an antique dealer, the car certainly created an impression.

This car has been in dry storage for ~4 years, having only covered 6,000 miles since 2007. It has been in the current family ownership since ~2014.

Richard admits that the responsibility that comes with owning such a car is out of his remit, and feels that it is best used in the hands of a new owner. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

CONTACT OWNER

Exterior

Distinguished and beautifully proportioned, the handsome colourway gives the car a timeless appeal.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloy wheels are in good shape, with just a handful of minor scuffs which are all evidently treatable. The car has a set of recently fitted Bridgestone tyres. The spare retains its original tyre. View the image gallery to see the wheels up close.

Bodywork

The panelwork is flush and true with no damage, all doors retain their satisfying and cushioning closing action, with no issues noted with the hinges or struts. Only the bonnet looks like it might require a slight adjustment. There are no outstanding observations of damage or structural issues on the car that we observed.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Peacock Blue" paintwork is in excellent shape, with a healthy shine and evidence of careful storage in the past. The bonnet appears to have been repainted at some point, with a slight variation in hue and a number of paint spots noted in a small prescribed area.

The car has a handful of minor age-related marks, but nothing significant, a light scuff on the off-side front arch and a minor scratch on the off-side C-Pillar are the most notable aspects. The car is generally free of significant road wear.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with no notable defects or damage to the panels, although the rear screen tint shows minor signs of age.

All of the chrome trim and exterior fittings are tidy, with the headlamp lenses showing a little haze but all lights and lenses are undamaged.

Interior

The well-preserved handcrafted bespoke wood and leather detailing is a wonder to behold.

Seats and Carpets

The sumptuous seats are covered in magnolia leather, and have aged well, with no significant signs of damage noted on the leather other than a little patina in line with the age of the car on the driver's seat. The rear seats benefit from the fold down picnic tables, a lovely touch.

The blue carpeting is in good shape, all dry and adorned with lambswool overmats. The boot carpet is in very good order.

Dashboard

The dashboard displays well, covered in a complimentary dark blue leather on the top. The leather and wood finishing is well in line with the expectation of the age of the car with no outstanding blemishes. All the dials and controls look good, with the owner confirming that everything works as it should.

The magnolia leather-trimmed cabin, cards and headlining are all free of significant damage or sagging but may benefit from a detailed valet.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel shows age-related wear on the blue leather, but otherwise free of damage. The gear lever is clean, with minor marks on the leather.

Mechanics

The Arnage has the capability to shift when pressed, but retains its air of decadence at all times.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine didn't pose any problems during the cold start, with the dashboard warning lights remaining off after being started. The engine ran well, with no untoward noises, no knocking or signs of creeping engine temperature.

It idles evenly with nothing much more than the expected condensation from the exhaust. The gearbox, as proved during the short test drive, performs without any problems, with no clunks or slippage and changes up and down smoothly. The engine is cleanly presented with no observations of fluid leaks on the day.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride is typically cossetting, with no negative feedback as the car encountered numerous speed humps. No knocking, wallowing or thuds were noted at low speeds.

The steering rained true and free of play, with the brakes fully compliant, stopping the car confidently with no noise or fuss.

The Drive

Typically offering refinement and grace in spades, the car's ride is a little firmer than expected, but given the performance capabilities, the suspension setting appears to be right for its intended use. The stiffness of the body is also noticeable as it corners ably, with no ill effects.

Sadly we never got the chance to open up the car on the faster roads, but the owner assures us that it drives with confidence and has an exceptional amount of power on tap. All the parking sensors are operational.

Electrics and Other

The car does show evidence of being previously well maintained, by the virtues of its correct starter and service batteries. A pair of original umbrellas also come with the car.

The car is fitted with a centrally mounted DVD player and monitors fitted on the back of the front headrests with intact and operational picnic tables mounted below them.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from family ownership since ~2014, this blue over magnolia Red Label Arnage presents in very good condition and is well worth a second look.

The car has been in storage since 2018 and has recently been given a fresh MOT, with not much more than new tyres needed to get the car back up to roadworthy condition. It comes with its original owner's manual, as well as operating instructions for its rear passenger DVD player and monitors. The owner doesn't have any of service history with him, but he informs us that HR Owen should have records of servicing up to 2006. It's also worth mentioning that the car is currently ULEZ-compliant.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
