Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

The BMW 1600-2 was first shown in 1966 at the Geneva Motor Show, it was hailed as an entry level car fitted with a 1.6L engine pushing out ~84bhp.

1967 saw the introduction of more models including a convertible and also a faster version, the TI which had a power output of ~104bhp. In 1971 the -2 was dropped from the name, simplifying it to 1602. A hatchback “Touring” model was introduced in 1971 too, however production of the Touring only lasted until 1972.

This specific car is a 1975 1602, a car from the final year of the 1602's production run. It comes to market after almost 4 years of ownership, in which Chris has restored the car himself.

You can find many receipts for parts Chris has used in the restoration and he'll be more than pleased to answer any questions in the comments below.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Chris had a yellow 2002 as his first car and when he saw this 1602 at a dealer who he knew, well it brought back a lot of memories for him.

Chris told us the car has been restored in the 90s by BMW. But was left under a cover since, unfortunately the cover had a leak which damaged the front floors and rear nearside sill. During Covid times Chris was spending a lot of time at home so decided to restore the 1602 himself. He told us it wasn't a nut and bold restoration however it was an excellent job.

Work carried out by Chris includes putting new floors in, removing suspension and a full respray. Chris has retrimmed the interior too, with half leather and houndstooth fabric, new carpets and underlay felt was also fitted. The sill was replaced along with the floors with parts supplied by JAYMIC, they provided most of the parts for the build, you can see the receipts in the paperwork section below. He fitted new bitumen floor pads heated and melted to the floor to improve noise insulation and rigidity. The doors were imported from Italy due to condition.

Chris has enjoyed the car since restoring it - he told us once the car is up to temperature it's a joy to drive, it does take a while to warm up like most classics cars. He told us he has a few other classic cars that he drives more often than the 1602, so has decided to part with the car.

Chris will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

With classic BMW styling the 1602 is an automotive icon.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels looked to be in great condition - we didn't notice any marks but being picky the centre caps were showing a bit of age.

The car was fitted with a full set of Uniroyal Rain Expert tyres - all had plenty of life left in them, we didn't notice any cracking in the rubber either.

Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the 1602 looked in great condition - we didn't notice any signs of corrosion on any of the panels or body, even the underside looked in great condition too. All panels lined up well with tight looking panel gaps.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint looked to be in great condition too - Chris told us he done the painting himself in "Verona Red", it looked like an even coverage across the car. The paint had nice depth and shine to it, we didn't notice any scratches or swirls on the paint.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car looked in great condition too - we didn't notice any chips or cracks in any of the glass. All the windows opened / closed as expected too.

The chrome trim around the car looked good - we did notice some slight age related marks, but it looked great otherwise.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

The interior has been retrimmed by Chris, with half vinyl and houndstooth fabric on the seats.

Seats and Carpets

As mentioned above the seats have been retrimmed with half vinyl and houndstooth fabric, they looked in great condition and we didn't notice much sign of wear on any of the seats.

The carpets also looked in great condition - we didn't noticed any marks on the carpets. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The classic dashboard still had all its original parts including the radio, it looked in good condition too - it is a simple dash with the speedometer in the centre of the instrument cluster with a temperature gauge to the left and clock to the right.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is an original BMW part from another model, Chris told us it gives a better driving position too. It looked in good condition, showing some slight signs of wear.

The gearsitck also looked in good condition - we did notice the gaiter did have some holes in it, in the creases, but not a major issue.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The perky little 1.6L engine will happily sit at 60mph, without any droning.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.6-litre engine started up first time with no issues, and on our drive with Chris the engine didn't miss a beat, cruising along at 60mph without issue.

The gearbox performed well too, it has quite a long throw to it, so could take time to get used to for some - it went into gears with no issues.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt great too - we didn't notice any untoward noises from the suspension whilst on the road with Chris. He told us the 1602 would benefit from some anti-roll bars, as well as being lowered a bit - to improve the handling in the corners.

The brakes felt good, we didn't test them properly but they did seem to have a good bite to them when we were out on the drive.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

Whilst on the road with Chris the car felt great, the engine performed well - it had a bit of a punch to it. Gearshifts felt smooth too, and were going in and engaging without an issue.

The chassis felt good, suspension felt good - there was a bit of roll in the corners but there was no unwanted noises, the brakes also felt good, plenty of bite in them.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

The 1602 is quite a simple car with little in the way of electric parts - all lights were working as expected.

Chris told us he disconnected the radio during the restoration but hadn't reconnected it since, but it should still work when connected.

History and Paperwork

This 1602 looked to be in great condition, with its recent restoration.

The 1602 is exempt from MOTs so hasn't been MOT'd recently, but Chris told us he would be happy to have an MOT carried out if the buyer wanted.

Chris has all the receipts for parts he used in the restoration, which can be found in the Paperwork section below. Chris also believes the low mileage on the clock means the car has been around the clock once before, so the real mileage is more likely to be 104,191.

Chris told us some more details on the restoration he done to the car; he fitted new wings, a boot lid from JAYMIC.

The engine and box was removed, cleaned and re-fitted. All brakes were overhauled, new shockers fitted etc. The heater matrix was rebuilt with a new Bosch motor, wheels were refurbed and New Uniroyal tyres fitted.

The interior is all retrimmed including the dash top, new carpets with underfelt fitted. Front and rear screen seals were changed along with the rear windows. The spare wheel is good and the tool kit, jack all present.

The radio needs wired but was working, it needs both door locks lubricated as the key is tight.

Chris told us he has a few spares which come with the car too including; sump / rocker gaskets, oil filter and clutch braided hose.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
