Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

Setting the benchmark for executive sports saloons by delivering high-end comfort and great driving dynamics, in style.

The second generation of the BMW 5 Series was built on the foundation of the original design. Despite the aesthetic similarities, it introduced class-leading innovations to the passenger safety cell, alongside anti-lock brakes and digital engine management. It was also the first 5 Series to angle the centre console directly toward the driver, creating an ergonomic cockpit that became a signature design trait of BMWs for decades.

The combination of an advanced electronic infrastructure and a driver-orientated cockpit delivered a high-tech, engaging experience behind the wheel. This unique driving sensation completely set BMW apart from its competitors, successfully capturing the devotion of a generation of repeat buyers.

Part of the original launch lineup, the 528i was the top-of-the-range model in the E28 series. Powered by the legendary M30 'Big Six' engine and using the highly reliable Bosch injection system, the 528i offered genuine sports car numbers wrapped in a sensible family saloon. Quickly gaining a reputation for bulletproof mechanical reliability, the M30 soon established itself as one of the world's most durable engines. The car offered top-tier creature comforts and a quiet, relaxed cabin, making it the ultimate, effortless long-distance cruiser of the 1980s autobahn.

Coming to market from a year and a half with our vendor, this 1984 BMW 528i is finished in 'Bahama Beige' metallic with a cloth interior. The car underwent an extensive restoration in 2018 and has had the automatic gearbox rebuilt. An additional £5,000 has been spent in the past 18 months on the suspension, braking, and fuel components. Sold with two keys, the owner's wallet, and original booklets, it has been updated with Apple CarPlay whilst still retaining a high percentage of its original character. This well-kept example has a recent service and a long MOT.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Jay the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's a bit of a sleeper around town, but it loves to move on the motorway.

Growing up in the 1980s, I lived on the same street as a BMW mechanic who prepared race cars at the weekends. One of his main dealer privileges was arriving home in great new models, and I always loved the shark nose styling of those early cars in particular. When I came across this specific example, I was struck by how beautifully its originality had been preserved.

I undertook some of the work myself, as this is an era of car where things were much simpler. I refreshed the mirrors, bonnet louvres, main grills, headlights, and fog lights, and I have also had oil services carried out annually despite only covering a few miles.

It is hard to justify keeping it when my combined annual mileage across my fleet is well below 12,000 miles. I also have another classic project that continues to drain my bank account.

Jay would be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The previous owner commissioned Classic Bahnstormers to complete extensive restoration work in 2018, using genuine OEM parts throughout.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15-inch BBS aluminium wheels look good and show only minor signs of age on the rims, which does not detract from their appearance.

The front wheels are fitted with Dunlop tyres from 2016 and 2017, while the rear wheels feature Hankook tyres from 2015 and 2016. They have a spec of 195/65 and show plenty of even tread.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The exterior looks smart, with no discernible panel damage or notable corrosion, aside from a couple of minor marks around the sunroof. The panel fit is flush to the body and the doors open and close easily. The door shut lines are consistent, and whilst the rear doors have a slightly wider gap, this does not appear to cause any issues.

The underside is solid, with a recently applied coat of underseal noted on the chassis rails, floor pan, and wheel arches. The engine bay and boot floor are in good condition.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Repainted as part of the Classic Bahnstormers restoration, the distinctive 'Bahama Beige' metallic paint has consistent coverage and a decent lustre. There are a small number of marks on the body, the most notable of which can be seen on the edge of the bonnet.

There is also a small cluster of underpaint reactions on the back edge of the nearside rear wing and an imperfection on the corner of the roof near the nearside of the top of the C pillar, but overall the finish and presentation are well above the expectations for a car of this age.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are all in good shape, with no issues noted on the headlamps, lenses, or tail lamps. The headlamps were removed and refurbished as part of the cosmetic refresh conducted by Jay.

The trim is correct for the model and appears to be original, showing mild signs of age, particularly on the side window and gutter trim, but nothing unsightly. The bumpers are well mounted and level with the bodywork. The bumpers have mild age-related surface tarnishing, and there is a slight scuff to the nearside front corner rubber trim.

image

Interior

Furnished with check control panels and an on-board computer, the near-perfect cabin cocoons the driver in an era of pioneering technology and effortless executive luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The cloth seats are in good condition, with mild wear noted on the upper bolster of the driver's seat; but otherwise they appear to have been well cared for. The foam on the driver's seat has been replaced. The rear seats look like they have never been used.

The carpets and mats are in good shape - well above the expectations for a car of this age - and all were free from damp.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard and facia are in decent condition, free from any significant scuffs or drill holes. More importantly, there are no fractures on the padding. The switches, controls, and dials look smart, and all are said to work as they should.

The door cards, headlining, and interior trim are all in good shape.

The rear speaker cases are reproduction BMW Premium Audio speaker holders, and the original Nokia items will be included in the sale.

The boot trim is tidy, which suggests light and careful use.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick complete the positive impression of a well-cared-for cabin.

image

Mechanics

Effortless straight-six power mated to an incredibly smooth ride and balanced handling.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up without any hesitancy and is free from any unwanted noises. The exhaust remains clear, aside from the expected cold engine condensation. It idles evenly, and all of the engine management lights stay off.

The engine looks good, and whilst some of the metal components have a sheen of age, the key items such as hoses and ancillaries support the regular maintenance and use of the car. The car remained leak free during our visit. Additionally, the fuel tank and fuel hoses have been replaced to ensure the car is completely E10 compliant, though it has been strictly run on premium E5 98/99 Super Unleaded. The engine underwent a Terraclean decarbonising treatment in 2025, and a new fuel pump has been recently fitted.

The automatic gearbox operated impeccably during our visit; it was subject to a £2,500 rebuild in November 2025 and is still under a 12-month warranty.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has been overhauled within the past year, including Bilstein shocks, new springs, bushes, and suspension arms. It was fully compliant during the test drive, handling with confidence and producing no unwanted noises when cornering. There were no knocks or thuds observed on uneven roads at low speed. At motorway speeds, it cruises smoothly, with no wallowing or fighting from the wheels.

The brakes operate flawlessly and were upgraded in 2025 with E34 components, including calipers and Brembo discs. This is a bolt-on transformation that gives a little more confidence when slowing and stopping the car, and there was no negative feedback on the road.

image

The Drive

At the time, the 528i was the flagship model of the E28 series. Its reputation as a desirable sports saloon stemmed from its excellent handling and ride quality rather than outright agility. However, where the car truly excels is on the motorway, where the sophistication of the smooth straight-six engine and peak power outweigh mere off-the-line performance, allowing the refinement of the powerplant to shine.

Jay offered us a drive in the car on both urban and faster roads, which not only allowed us to appreciate how well it copes in both scenarios, but also to appreciate the BMW approach to engineering.

The engine pulls evenly in a smooth, linear fashion, accompanied by a distinctive throaty exhaust note under acceleration. Driving at 30 mph in traffic revealed no issues with the steering, which remained responsive and completely quiet. We didn't hear any unwelcome noises from the wheels, and cabin noise remained typically suppressed. We took the car for a short excursion along the motorway, which perfectly demonstrated the true test of its purpose. It ably managed to keep up with traffic, with loads of mid-range flexibility, offering the sort of effortless performance that makes long journeys a pleasure.

Jay has not had any issues with the oil pressure or engine temperature. He has used the car only in dry weather and has been very satisfied with its reliability and dependability.

image

Electrics and Other

The brake lights are operational, but the bulb holder has an intermittent loose connection, which was the reason for the diagnostic warning error. Jay will ensure that it is fully operational by the time the car is handed over to the new owner.

The manual sunroof operates without issues, with both the tilt and slide mechanisms working as they should. All four electric windows function perfectly, with no signs of strain.

An aftermarket immobiliser has also been fitted.

The car features an Apple CarPlay multimedia information system, which also incorporates a reversing camera. The original tape player has been retained and will be included in the sale.

History and Paperwork

Since acquiring the car, Jay has invested over £5,000 to bring it up to his exacting standards.

First registered in August 1984 by BMW main dealer Pathfield Garage of Devon, it's covered around 2,000 miles since 2003. In recent years, the car has been stored for periods. Jay acquired the vehicle in December 2024, purchasing it from the previous owner who had invested in a comprehensive restoration by BMW specialists Classic Bahnstormers in 2018.

The accompanying invoices for work begin in 2014, which include servicing, a new fuel pump, welding, and a new alternator. Further work in 2018 focused on the engine, including a new water pump and radiator and more welding. It was during this period that the car underwent a body and paint restoration, complemented by extra work to the engine, suspension, and interior. A further £1,000 was spent before Jay took ownership of the car.

Jay then invested an additional £5,000, which covered braking, suspension, and engine components, on top of a gearbox rebuild, servicing, a new fuel tank, and numerous cosmetic parts. He has supplied an itinerary of his work, which is included in the history section.

Last serviced in March 2026, the car comes with its original owner's booklets, including a service book detailing its early service history, and two sets of keys. Whilst the vehicle is now eligible for free road tax and the MOT test exemption, Jay has taken the sensible precaution of securing a fresh MOT, which runs until March 2027.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
