Introduction

Josh Sharples
Professional Photographer & Consigner

The 635 CSi is the epitome of BMW - comfort and elegance combined with the power from the straight-6 engine.

Introduced in 1985, the E24 Series BMW 635 CSi represented the penultimate symbol of the BMW range. The sublime styling, gaining the name ‘shark nose’ due to its prominent forward-facing nose was a suitably apt name for a car connected with financial professionals. The car was created by Paul Bracq, who managed to combine elegant lines with serious presence. This is not to say that the car doesn’t have other attributes though, they were well regarded as effortless long-distance cruisers and as fitting for a sports coupe, the 635 CSi also had an active competition pedigree, winning three European Touring Car Championships in the process.

Perfect for the owner who ranks style as important as performance, the 635 CSi has still had to live under the shadow of the M6 version. However, as M6 prices reach unobtainable levels, the very best examples of late model 635 CSi's start becoming very appealing.

This 635 CSi has had two previous owners before Chris, with the previous owner doing a lot of work on the car, which can be see in the Mechanical Review video. Numerous Alpina parts are fitted on the car, and this example was resprayed in Avus Blue last year, making it the only Avus Blue 635 CSi in the country as this colour was not an option when the car was launched in 1985.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Josh after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Chris is an avid BMW enthusiast, caring for many over the years - he has recently purchased a new classic BMW, meaning that his beloved 635 CSi has to find a new owner.

Chris originally purchased this car eleven years ago in 2011 after searching for one of the last 'sharknose' BMWs, and since then he has put ~11,000 miles on the clock. Throughout the years, he has driven in a number of rallies, such as the 2014 41 Club Classic Rally, as seen via the sticker in the windscreen. Chris is a huge BMW fan, and has an impressive collection of the German cars, with this 635 situating itself as his "classic BMW".

However, since purchasing a 1972 BMW E3, that takes the crown as his 'classic BMW', meaning that he has to part ways with his much loved 635 CSi.

Chris would be happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

One of the last "sharknose" BMWs, the 635 CSi is a well-sought after car, and this example is in great condition.

Wheels and Tyres

The 20-spoke Alpina design wheels are in great condition, with only minimal marks visible on 3 of the alloys. The front wheels are wrapped in Toyo Proxes TR1s, and the rear in Toyo Proxes CF2s, and both sets show good tread remaining.

Bodywork

During its restoration with the previous owner roughly 20 years ago, the styling of the bodywork changed dramatically. Alpina side skirts, front spoiler and rear skirts were added, and these remain in great condition with no damage seen during our visit. Our consigner didn't spot any rust whilst photographing the car, and the light doesn't show any ill-fitting panels.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint is in great condition. It underwent a complete respray last summer in BMW Avus Blue, making it an incredibly rare example as this colour wasn't a standard option when the 635 CSi was launched in 1985. Alpina stripes are found around the car on top of the paintwork, but Chris the owner assures us that they can be removed without damaging the paint.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to grasp a better understanding of this stunning paintwork for yourself.

Glass and Trim

The glass is also in great condition, with no visible chips, cracks or marks on all windows. The chrome trim compliments the Avus Blue spectacularly, and is also in really good condition. Please browse through our media gallery have a better look of this for yourself.

Interior

The interior of this 635 CSi has been improved with its JVC modern radio and genuine Alpina steering wheel.

Seats and Carpets

The Recaro seats are finished in blue leather, and these only have slight age-related marks, mainly on the driver's seat, yet other than this they are in good condition considering the 36 years of life. The carpet overmats have only recently been replaced, so they appear in great condition. Please check both the photos and videos in the media gallery to see the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

Thanks to the love this car received, the dashboard is in very good condition with minimal wear visible on our visit. The dashboard features a speedometer and rev counter, and Chris tells us all functions work including the dashboard computer diagnostic system. The original cassette player has been replaced by a JVC radio.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Continuing with the Alpina theme, this 635 CSi is fitted with the genuine steering wheel from the E24 B9 Alpina, which is finished in black leather with 4 metal spokes featuring the Alpina name and badge in the centre - it is in good condition with minimal wear. The automatic gearstick is in good condition too and Chris assures us that there is a really smooth automatic transmission selection.

Mechanics

The straight-six M30 engine pushes approximately 215 bhp, and plenty of work has been done over its 36-year life to maintain the quality of its performance.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay of the 635 CSi is home to the 3.4L inline-six M30 engine, producing a maximum of 215 bhp at 5200 rpm. The engine in this 635 is in great condition, having been cared for by Chris over the past eleven years. Similar to the rest of the car, we didn't spot any visible sign of rust around or within the engine bay. Chris tells us that the engine has been TerraCleaned a few years back, which means that it runs slightly better than before. It has recently been fitted with a stainless steel rear exhaust box, as well as an electric radiator fan.

Chris tell us that the gearbox was overhauled 3 years ago and is smooth and shifts with no issues. Please review the media gallery to gain a better understanding of the condition of the engine, and watch the video to see and hear the engine work out on the roads.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has Bilstein shock absorbers fitted as well as having poly bushes fitted in the rear, which helps the ride to feel smooth despite the current condition of British roads! The car stops well, with no juddering or noise, and all the pads and discs appear to have of life remaining. Chris is happy to answer any questions about the suspension and brakes.

The Drive

Please watch the ‘On The Road’ video to see the car being driven on the roads.

On our short drive in the 635 CSi, the straight-six engine sounded incredible, and the brakes functioned as well as they should, stopping the car at ease. The driving position of the seats make you feel like one with the car, and this means that you have an exhilarating experience every mile behind the wheel.

We didn't hear any rattles on the drive, and the car drove just as expected.

Electrics and Other

As mentioned in the dashboard section, a JVC radio has been installed, which comes with bluetooth, a USB socket as well as hands-free telephone access - this compliments the Pioneer speakers fitted. The car has central locking, which works off a fob. All the functions work, with all 4 electric windows working as well as the sunroof, as pictured open and close in the gallery below.

Chris reports that all lights, switches and buttons work as they should.

Underneath of the car has been painted and undersealed.

History and Paperwork

With a good service history, full restoration and coming from ~11 years of ownership, this has to be the best 635 CSi on the market right now.

With only two previous owners before Chris, this 635 has been thoroughly cared for. Chris tells us that this car underwent a complete restoration roughly 20 years ago with the previous owner, and at that point the car went from silver to blue, as seen in the Mechanical Review video. As well as the colour change, this is also when the Alpina wheels, side skirts, front spoiler and skirts on the rear were added, which dramatically changed the way the car looked, making it appear more aggressive.

Chris tells us that the car has been garaged the whole 11 years of ownership, and he constantly works on all of his cars keeping them in top condition.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Chris, just have a few questions.

Can you confirm the following;

1. All of the electrics work, i.e windows, roof, aerial etc.
2. Do the onboard computers work.
3. Do all heater controls work, can you regulate the temperatures.
4. The area under the radio, with all of the wires hanging down. Can you advise what these are for or what’s missing.
Many thanks
David
