Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The 635 CSi encapsulates everything a BMW should be. Comfortable and elegant with plenty of attitude.

The first BMW 6 series (internal code E24) was first released in 1976, produced until 1989, and replaced the E9 coupe. The car was only ever available as a 2-door coupe and was regarded as the epitome of sporting elegance.

The E24 comes with sophisticated tech, with plenty of safety and comfort as standard. The dynamic power steering system would adjust depending on the engines speed and be hailed as a milestone in car dynamics.

The 635CSi was one of the most sought-after versions of the E24, as it was a benchmark for performance and comfort. At the time it was the quickest four-seater coupe available with a top speed of 140MPH with an impressive output of 218BHP thanks to the optimized compression ratio.

Fergus acquired this vehicle in May, however, the car has been within his family for the previous 10 years and maintained by his father, a keen sports car enthusiast.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Fergus the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The car has been within my family for the previous 10 years, we've had a lot of great road trips in this grand tourer.

Fergus took over ownership of this desirable 635 CSi from his father, who has owned the car around 10 years. Fergus has enjoyed using the car over the summer, however, due to lack of use has decided to part with the shark-nosed 6-series.

He has had the car fully serviced in March, along with the ABS sensor attended to. You can see the car functioning without fault mechanically in the on-the-road video. The car would benefit from some cosmetic enhancement and therefore Fergus is looking for someone with as strong a passion for BMWs to take over ownership. He'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The iconic shark nose, 80s rubber trim and styling, the E24 was a definite modernisation of BMW style.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with BMW 'Style 5' wheels, the alloys look in good condition with all 4x BMW hub caps present. The wheels are free from any major curbing, however, would benefit from a deep clean and polish.

The wheels are wrapped in Michelin TRX GT's all around and appear to have a usable amount of tread. We did notice some slight areas of cracking in places, they passed their most recent MOT with only one advisory (the offside rear).

Bodywork

Classic shark-nose styling, the bodywork looks good on the desirable 635CSi example with areas of age in some places. All the panels of this 6-Series appear very straight with no dents visible. The panel gaps and shut lines appear tight and true.

There is surface corrosion present, on the nearside front arch, and offside arches as well as the boot, the common places. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a classic and classy Alpine white, the colour really suits the shape of this car from the '80s. The paint would benefit from a good mop and some stone chips touch up, but overall the paint appears in very good condition, with consistent colour and finish across every panel. The two-tone pinstripe would benefit from being replaced.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be in very good, unchipped condition. No areas of distortion or discoloration were noted. The black rubber seals around the glass look good too, with no known leaks from the sunroof either.

Interior

Luxuriously equipped and ahead of its time, the 6-Series cabin offers a huge amount of space and comfort.

Seats and Carpets

Very comfortable sport seats with deep bolsters are fitted within the 4-seat grand tourer. The seats are finished in (0200) natural leather and present in good condition.

There is some wear to both the passenger and driver's seat bolsters, in the form of cracks and creases, but still in line with the age and mileage of the car.

The driver's door card was a little loose, due to two clips missing, however all in good condition along with the carpets and headlining. Take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view.

Dashboard

The black dash looks in great condition and will be a familiar sight to any previous BMW owner.

The ABS light is currently on.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a BMW M-Technic three-spoke steering wheel, it makes manoeuvring the 635CSi very easy. The automatic BMW gearstick and steering wheel are presented in great condition.

Mechanics

The shark still has plenty of bite with its beefy 3.5L, a top speed of 140MPH and 218BHP to tap into.

Engine and Gearbox

During our brief trip out in the BMW 635CSi, all the mechanical systems work as expected and for the age of the car.

The car's battery isn't very old, however as Fergus had not used the car in a few weeks, therefore car required a jump to start the car from cold. We captured this in the mechanical video.

Take a look at the mechanical video for footage of the car on the road too, swiftly and elegantly working its way through the gears without fault.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension offers a firm ride to hold the car when pushed hard around corners, but soft enough to iron out the bumps on grand tours around the continent.

Fergus reports the suspension and brakes have always received the attention they've required throughout his and his father's ownership. In March the car was fitted with a new ABS sensor.

The Drive

Being a late example, this '88 is fitted with the improved and sought-after 3.5L injection engine, the car does a great job at eating up miles in an elegant fashion with smooth yet sporty performance.

Electrics and Other

Most of the luxurious electrical features are said to work as they should including the air-con, Fergus tells us.

The fully electric front seats and rear extendable aerial were all operational on our visit. The electric sunroof and front headlight wipers unfortunately do not work at present and Fergus suspects a minor problem with the fan speed on the heaters - it is either completely on or off, instead of off - slow- full.

History and Paperwork

Family-owned for the past 10 years, this sought-after 635CSi is ready for some cosmetic work over winter, ready to be enjoyed next summer.

Fergus has really enjoyed his E24 ownership. The car comes with a host of provenance dating back to when it rolled off the production line, including its service log book and tax discs. In March 2021, the car had the internal fan replaced, ABS Sensor changed, 6x new plugs, cap distributor, 6x new leads.

Fergus would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.
