Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The 520i SE is a perfect snapshot of early ’90s Bavarian engineering - classic E34 styling, understated, refined, and effortlessly poised.

The BMW 520i SE represents the perfect balance of understated luxury and classic BMW engineering. Part of the revered E34 generation of the 5 Series, this model combined executive comfort with precise handling and dependable performance - hallmarks of BMW’s early ’90s design philosophy.

As an SE (Special Equipment) model, it came well-appointed for its era, featuring upgraded interior trim, alloy wheels, electric windows, and enhanced comfort features.

With its smooth inline-six engine, five-speed automatic transmission and trademark rear-wheel-drive layout, it delivers that unmistakable blend of comfort and precision that made BMW the ultimate driving machine of its era.

This example comes to market after almost seven and a half years with our vendor, it has a factory fitted sunroof, low mileage, two sets of keys and well looked after through its years. Other fitted extras include; electrically adjustable and heated mirrors, front and rear electric windows and halogen front fog lights.

Today, the 520i SE stands as a charming reminder of the brand’s golden age - an era before electronics took centre stage, when craftsmanship and mechanical feel defined the experience behind the wheel. Well worth a closer look over to admire its quality and prestige, the well presented and sharp 5 series is a great example of a very smart E34.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A car I've been very proud to own - when I saw the quality of it, I knew I had to have one.

Having worked in the motoring industry for all of his career, David, the current owner, had the opportunity to see and test one of these in great detail before his original purchase, he said, "I used to work for Land Rover and part of our job there, was to do an analysis of competitor vehicles. When we received one of these 5-series models it was very impressive. Having spent a good deal of time with the car, I knew it was the right car for me to buy".

With another car purchase on the horizon, the E34 comes to market to make way for David's new car, he went on to say, "Really, I'm only selling it as I'm buying another BMW. If I had room or the time to drive both I would, as this one has served me very well".

David will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The 520i SE embodies classic early ’90s BMW design - clean, confident, and refined. Timeless and well-balanced, it’s a true example of BMW’s executive elegance.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” cross spoke alloy wheels and BMW centre caps appear in excellent condition after refurbishment works in December 2018.

The front and rear of the BMW is fitted with Falken Ziex tyres with date codes from 2014 and a spec of 225/60.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the 520i and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

Panels align well and we could see no visible distortion to these areas. Shut lines and panel gaps look good and all doors, bonnet and boot opened and closed well, exactly what you would expect from BMW engineering.

We noted a slight crease to the front bumper on the upper edge, although we had to look fairly close to spot this. There was also a small mark to the passenger side rear bumper edge and a small ding to the rear boot lower lip.

Works to address corrosion and body repair were completed in 2016. Welding and repair works were carried out on the drivers side door in 2024.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The 'Island Green' finish looks in great shape and overall, appears with a well matched colour, particularly given this car is ~34 years old.

If we were being picky, there were a few stone chips around the front grille and front bumper. There was a minor scuff mark on the driver side rear door upper edge and a minor blemish on the passenger side boot edge.

We noted the rear passenger side quarter panel showed to be a little flat, and had some minor signs of paint bubbling.

The bonnet, roof and boot were resprayed in 2019.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, rear and side windows all displayed really well and showed with BMW etching to the side and rear glass.

Front and rear lights all appear in very good condition, and we could see no sign of scratching to the finish here.

Badges and emblems are present and correct, but the front badge does show a scratch.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the rest of the condition of the car.

To the interior, door cards showed really well, with only a few minor marks on the trim. The headlining of the cabin looked excellent.

The sunroof opened and closed well and without concern.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

A driver-focused layout, clear analogue dials, and quality materials create a solid, comfortable, and timeless cabin feel.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in grey fabric with a striped centre section and were showing very nicely.

The passenger seat showed a slight surface mark to the edge of the inner bolster side. The rear seats look barely used with no real issues.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats showed to be in great condition and looking underneath these, the main floor sections showed without worry.

Checking over the boot, this section showed no concerns and was clean and tidy with no real issues.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The grey dash across the centre console appears in fantastic shape overall, with no cracks or splits.

Black dials with white needles looked excellent and were all functioning as expected. The odometer showed with ~60,283 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in brilliant overall condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. All gauges and digital interfaces were functioning without concern when starting up the car and out on the road.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel looks in lovely condition with only minor marks to the edges, nothing concerning here though.

The black gear selector didn't present any issues with its presentation and the surround looked in good shape.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and check over the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The 2.0L inline-six M50 engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, delivering ~150 BHP to the rear wheels and a top speed of ~127MPH from factory.

Engine and Gearbox

The BMW performed without issue when running, and out on the road - it felt tight during the drive. Looking over the engine bay, the presentation was really good. We noted no signs of leaks or engine issues on the day.

The auto gearbox has optional drive modes for sport and economy functions - this worked through its paces without any problems. We took the car on a drive around some local roads with the owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no major issues.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey, and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. Front and rear discs and pads were replaced in January 2015.

Overall the car performed as to be expected with no concerns.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The car handles well, going through the motions out on the road without complaint. The car is a relaxed and comfortable place to be with an inviting ride and balanced level of control.

An adjustment to the steering box was completed in March 2025.

Gear changes sounded slick with the steering precise and road-holding felt sure footed.

Our 'On the Road' video gives an overview of the car on some local roads and how it performs whilst driving.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great condition.

The BMW is equipped with a Pioneer stereo, updated JVC speakers, dash clock, a spare wheel located in the boot and a complete tool kit. A lovely touch was the inclusion of the map light, located in the glovebox.

The sunroof opened and closed well and without concern, the door mirrors are electrically adjustable and heated too.

A new genuine BMW centre and rear exhaust was fitted in 2022.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although David told us everything was in working order as far as he was aware.

History and Paperwork

Presenting very well with servicing completed less than ~4,000 miles ago, a new exhaust and low mileage, this sunroof equipped 5-series is well worth a closer look.

The E34’s solid build quality, balanced chassis, and timeless styling make the 520i SE a standout example of when BMW built cars for drivers first and foremost.

This example comes to market with a factory fitted sunroof, low mileage, 2 sets of keys and well looked after through its years. Other fitted extras include; electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, front and rear electric windows and halogen front fog lights.

Previous works have included; new speaker upgrades in August 2017, replacement front shock absorbers and rear suspension links in March 2017, body repairs and corrosion works and a machine polish in February 2016, new interior headlining and parcel shelf in June 2015, new drive belt and tensioner in February 2015 and new tyres and front and rear discs and pads in January 2015.

We cover the history of the BMW in our paperwork gallery. Take a look over the previous records and MOT certificates to see more behind the 520i.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi David, I know there’s a few references to the electrical bits in the ad already, but could you confirm specifically if the central locking, electric mirrors and windows all work as intended? Many Thanks

Hi David, the car looks in great condition. What about the floor pan, bottom of the struts under sills etc. how do you think this fairs and do you know if it has ever had any form of under seal protection ?
