Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Last of an era, a proper six-cylinder M5 and arguably the best '90s super-tourer ever made.

The BMW M5 E34 Touring offers practicality, comfort, but most importantly speed and superb handling. This E34 M5 is the complete package with its Daytona Violet individual paint and black leather interior.

The E34 was the second generation M5, which was in production from 1988 to 1995 and powered by the S38 straight-6 engine. BMW introduced the LHD touring version in 1992, it was the last hand-built M5 and only 891 touring versions were ever manufactured.

This example features the upgraded 3.8 litre S38B38 engine, which produces 335bhp and a 0-60mph time of 5.9 seconds. The car will turn heads for sure, and wears its battle scars from what can only have been ~160,000 KMs of pure driving pleasure.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Ranj the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I bought the car from Belgium around a year ago, and drove it all the way back here to London.

Ranj has owned this German market E34 M5 for the previous year having acquired the car in Belgium. After the drive back, the car hasn't seen much use, and has been in storage for the most part.

Due to that lack of use, and some business opportunities that Ranj would like to pursue, he's made the decision to find the M5 a new home. He hasn't registered the car for use in the UK yet, but is happy to get the car registered with the DVLA for the new owner if they would like him to.

Exterior

Nostalgic '90s boxy body styling. This E34 M5 retains the classic BMW shape which only gets better with age.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with BMW Style 21 17" throwing star alloy wheels. These wheels are rather unique, as you can remove the inner throwing star shape that was an aerodynamic brake cooling feature.

The car was optioned with the "Nürburgring-Package" and so features wider than standard rear wheels. All the wheels look in good condition with some very minor scuffs observed. The tyres look great too, with plenty of tread for the new owner.

Please take a look at the detailed videos and photos for a closer view of the tyres.

Bodywork

The all important "Touring" body shape on this M5 is the showpiece. With the M5 badging and sporty wheels, you just don't expect to see the estate form but it just works.

The panels gaps and shut-lines look great across the car. The car is missing the flap for the fuel filler in the pictures as the hinge has broken but the flap is supplied. The bodywork has some small parking/door dents as you'll see in the photos and videos. Please take a look at the images and videos for a closer look around this very special car.

Paint

This M5 is finished in Daytona Violet which is part of the BMW individual catalogue, what a great choice.

The paint is even in colour and finish on each panel, it still comes up beautifully in photos. However this car is wearing its mileage with pride, mainly in the form of some severe road rash on the front. Added to this are some scratches across the body and bonnet, the new owner could run the car as is, or make this car a candidate for a fresh coat of paint.

Glass and Trim

Inline with the age and mileage, the rubber trim in comparison to the paint shows its age more. Unlike the paint, the plastic and rubber trim has faded, and they've done their job showing a few scrapes saving the bodywork.

This example is fitted with the double/early panoramic sun roof that functions correctly, a lovely feature for the passengers to enjoy.

The rear trim at the top of the tailgate is lifting at the edges as pictured, take a look at the photos for a detailed view.

Interior

Charming simplicity hi-fi '90s interior - Euro styling with luxurious touches, this car was built to last.

Seats and Carpets

Featuring black leather interior, the seats are fully electric and offer a memory function for multiple drivers. Cutting edge for its time, and still today, 30 years later this is still a luxurious feature to have fitted.

This car has been used and loved, being one of the last hand-built BMWs, that quality really does shine through. The leather seats show some creasing but considering the mileage are pretty good, as well as the carpets and door cards.

Dashboard

If you've ever driven an 80s to 00s BMW, this sight will be familiar. The classic four dial set up with clear and crisp numbers directly in the drivers view.

Being an M5 it features the M division logo, and a range of additional electrical controls. Ranj reports everything is working correctly with no warning lights observed. Please view the images for a closer view of the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic BMW 4-spoke steering wheel and M-Sport gear stick put you in full control of this M5 touring.

Similar to the seats, wear is in line with the mileage of the car. Please view the images and videos to see close up details of this BMW M5.

Mechanics

Under the hood is a naturally aspirated 3.8L straight-six, they don't make them like this anymore.

Engine and Gearbox

The upgraded 3.8L straight-6 produces a whopping 335bhp, it's considered to be one of the best M5's of all time.

Full rear-wheel drive and powered by a 5-speed manual gearbox, it also has a limited-slip differential with 25% lockup, a great handling car with an engine built for one thing only, going fast.

Ranj reports the engine and gearbox work very well. A lovely example ready for a new owner to cherish and enjoy.

Suspension and Brakes

From 1992, the E34 M5 featured revised Boge suspension (dubbed Adaptive M technic) and improved safety and security. The M-System II, throwing star alloy design improved brake cooling from the combination of larger openings and fins placed in the driving direction.

This example having the "Nürburgring-Package" which was an option for early 3.8L variants, has the servotronic option for the suspension, along with a stronger anti roll bar to keep the car firmly connected to the road.

Ranj reports a smooth and comfortable ride in the E34 M5, adding that suspension perhaps feels a bit on the soft side, and mentions the car stops well too. Please see the mechanical videos and photos to have a closer look at the brakes and suspension.

The Drive

The BMW M5 E34 Touring is more than just a fast car, it also very practical with seating for four adults in a refined cabin, a massive load/boot capacity and a 90-litre fuel tank.

The car redlines at 7,000 rpm and will encourage you to drive it to the max, just what you want in a super-tourer.

Electrics and Other

The first M5 to get adjustable electronic damper controls, with a switch on the dashboard which lets you change between two different stiffnesses.

Period classic front headlight wash jets are also fitted, which look great.

History and Paperwork

This German market LHD E34 M5 finished in Daytona Violet is a desirable example any enthusiast would love to get their hands on.

With it's BMW individual paint it really stands out from the crowd, you won't find many on the market like this one that's for sure.

The car comes with a service book that has two stamps, and with a few invoices and car checks from it's time in Belgium, along with Belgian and German registration documents. As mentioned, the car has not been registered in the UK yet, but Ranj the owner is happy to have the car registered before collection by the new owner should they wish him to action this.

Hi, if the car is not yet registered in the UK, will it now be necessary to pay VAT to register it here, given the new post-Brexit tax regime?
