Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Up there with the heavyweights of the 90s luxury coupes - all Aluminium V8 and sleek European styling.

The 8 Series is truly an iconic car that was far ahead of its time when it was launched at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show. The E31 represents the first-generation variant of this grand tourer, based on the E24 6 Series platform. To boost sales, BMW introduced a 200kg lighter and more affordable 8 Series, badged as the 840Ci. This 2-door coupe is powered by the large and reliable V8 4.0L M60B40 engine, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, delivering a power output of ~286bhp.

This particular example comes to the market after ~25 years of ownership, with just 2 keeper before. The car has been resprayed at the start of this year in the factory colour of "Oxford Green Metallic", and a few interior elements worked on too, to bring the car up the standard you see today.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I wanted to treat myself to something special, this definitely hit the mark, hence the long ownership!

Brian has owned this BMW 840Ci for approximately 25 years. He's covered some ~120,000 miles in his ownership, and at the start of this year had some renovation work actioned on the car, including a full glass out respray as pictured, some electrical niggles sorted and the interior smartened up too.

He would love to keep the 8 Series as part of his collection. However, due to lack of use and the desire to purchase a new electric daily driver, Brian has decided to free up garage space. He will be available to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Iconic pillar-less coupe design with pop-up headlights, the 8 series still looks striking today.

Wheels and Tyres

The period-correct BMW "Style 21" 17 inch wheels, finished in semi gloss silver, are a popular choice among enthusiasts. On this example, the wheels appear to have been well cared for, and were refurbished at the start of the year in Januar, there was no obvious damage observed on any of the spokes.

The wheels are fitted with Falken and Michelin tyres which seem to be in good condition. They are dated 2010/14/15/16 and have ample tread remaining, with no visible cracking or signs of aging on the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this 840Ci appears to be in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car aligning well. During our visit, we didn't spot any noticeable dings along the car's flanks. Everything looks crisp and sharp, and the car stands very straight and true, no obvious signs of corrosion were spotted on the bodywork either, any issues up top were rectified as part of the work in January this year.

We've provided detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a comprehensive view of what's on offer and to assess the car's condition for yourselves.

Paint

As previously mentioned, the car has been resprayed in the original and sought-after "Oxford Green Metallic", the paint exhibits a lovely standard with even coverage and consistent colour across every panel.

Once more, we have provided high-resolution images and videos for your personal assessment of the paint condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this BMW 840Ci appears to be in great condition, in line with the mileage and ownership. During our visit, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discoloration. The window seals also appear to be in good condition, consistent with the overall state of the car. Brian reports replacing the front and rear screen with the restoration of this car.

Take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of this BMW 840Ci up close.

Interior

Lavished in Light Parchment leather, the interior is angled towards the driver for a sporting yet luxurious feel.

Seats and Carpets

The "Light Parchment" leather seats have retained their shape very well over the years. Brian reports that he replaced a panel in the seats as pictured and had the headlining addressed in February 2023 by K.Baggs Trimming, interior specialists. They are in decent condition, the leather showing its age in the form of cracking in some areas, and some of the associated trim having some marks too that come over time.

A similar story is observed with the leather door cards and Cream carpets. We did notice areas of pitting on the chrome interior elements.

Please refer to the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard in this 840Ci shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs.

With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~170,011 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original BMW steering wheel is in good condition, in line with the mileage of this car. The leather automatic gear selector also looks well-maintained. Please check the image gallery for more details of the interior.

Mechanics

A highly dependable engine, the M60 V8 is considered bulletproof by many.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.0L M60B40 engine from BMW is a well-regarded and reliable unit. On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road - the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without any issues.

Brian reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth automatic five-speed gearbox, powering the rear wheels. Please refer to the mechanical video for a view of the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look under the 840Ci, including the engine bay. We did notice some minor surface corrosion on some of the engine components, it would benefit from detailing to match the freshly painted exterior.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provided a smooth journey on the sweeping Dorset roads, some of the underside of the car does show surface corrosion and would benefit from attention.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a 8 Series grand tourer from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

A luxurious yet quick drive is always offered in the 840Ci, it will certainly put a smile on your face, fitted with a quad exhaust system which sounds great with the pillar-less windows down.

On the road with Brian, the car felt tight, it had more than enough power to push it along the road and around those sweeping corners.

Electrics and Other

An aftermarket radio was present in the car when we visited but Brian still has the original which is in great condition, he is re-fitting it next week.

We didn't test all the electrics during our visit, Brian reports that the internal vanity lights behind the sun visors are not working and there's an intermittent problem with the fog light warning in the central display he suspects it to be a sensor issue as the fog lights work. To his knowledge, Brian told us all other electrics are functional and operational, in line with the overall condition of the car. Brian had electrical work carried out on the car in January 2023 as detailed in the invoices.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~25 year ownership, the car has received a respray in January 2023 along with some other maintenance, it's ready for a new home.

The car is coming out of ~25 years of ownership with Brian. It has been revitalised and completely resprayed in its original 'Oxford Green Metallic,' with electrical work carried out at the beginning of this year. The headlining and leather seats were professionally addressed in February 2023, bringing the car to a good usable level. This leaves the new custodian with room to further improve the car, or use it as a daily modern classic.

Unfortunately the service book has been lost during the respray. Brian returned to the main dealers Tice in Dorchester BMW, to retrieve all the previous dates and work carried out. You can review this history and paperwork media to see previous MOT reports and the work this 840Ci has received during its time with Brian.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Key Bidding Facts

What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
