Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Distinctive, luxurious, powerful and innovative – in the 90's this was BMW’s flagship offering, and it’s easy to understand why.

Launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 the 8 Series was BMW’s flagship line. Available only as a 2 door pillarless coupe, the E31 came in both V12 and V8 form and was marketed as a luxuriously appointed grand tourer. The distinctive exterior included pop up headlights and aerodynamic wedge shaped body, set it apart from the contemporary BMW range. Powered by BMW’s M60, 4.0L V8 delivering ~282BHP to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic gearbox, the 840 Ci is capable of 0-60MPH in ~7 seconds and a factory top speed of ~155MPH.

This particular car comes to market from long ownership, just 5 former keepers registered, and over the past year has been treated to a few updates after long term storage. It has had a new stainless steel exhaust system fitted, the split-rim wheels have been refurbished, a new air conditioning condenser, new brake discs, pads and replacement brake and fuel lines. In addition, it's had some corrective work actioned on the paint, and it has covered ~38,760 miles in its life.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Pete the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love BMW's and particularly the original 8 series - you don't see many on the road anymore so it turns heads wherever you go.

Pete has always had a BMW, believing the model range and build quality to be second to none, he tells us “I love the smooth V8 power, it comfortable, the drive is fantastic and it's fast!".

He goes on to say “The car had only done ~25,000 miles when I got it and I’ve only done ~13,000 myself – I just don’t use it enough so, time for another owner to enjoy it”. Pete will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

From the angular wedge shaped design, to the aggressive rear exhaust, the BMW is a refined modern classic.

Wheels and Tyres

The BMW is complete with a set of 17" split-rim wheels that have been refurbished, the inner lattice painted gold. These are in good condition all round, just a few marks noted to them but overall didn't raise any major concerns.

Equipped with a set of Pirelli Rosso tyres to the front and Pirelli Asimetrico to the rear, the tyres have a spec of 255/40 to the front and 265/40 at the rear. Front tyres are date coded at 2006 and 2014. The rear tyres show date codes of 2009. The tyres do show some signs of wear and the rear offside tyre looks to require particular attention. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this 840 and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands level, shut lines look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well, exactly as you would expect from BMW build quality. We noted no major dings to the exterior, however there is a small one on the offside door under the wing mirror, and the sunroof is suffering from corrosion on the edges as pictured.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Calypso Red Metallic" is a stunning colour and generally there is a consistent and even finish across the car. There are several age-related marks, some scratches and a some marks that have been touched in like the top edge of the bonnet. There has been some paint correction in the past year, the front end re-sprayed, refreshing the finish as pictured.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass and trim on the BMW showed in a good condition with no major cause for concern. Windscreen, side windows and rear window all look good with no significant scratching, marks or chips.

The seals look good around the outside and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Rubber sections on the interior edges looked good and only showed a few signs of wear, which is to be expected. We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

The 840 Ci is presented with a lovely ivory interior, this GT can seat 4 and transport in total comfort.

Seats and Carpets

Ivory leather, electrically adjustable seats show minor wear reflecting the low mileage of this car. We could see no rips, tears or damage and rear seats appear hardly used at all, the nearside rear having some marks to the leather as pictured. The front seats just some age related cracking showing to the bolsters.

If we were being picky, the interior of the car on the seating could do with a good level of cleaning and detailing to bring it back up to standard. We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The dash area across the BMW showed nicely with no major scuffs, scratches or unwanted issues that we observed. Clocks and dials showed nicely with ~38,760 miles at the time of our visit.

We noted no warning lights on the display when the car was on the road. The dash area showed with a good level of presentation and all sections were functional showing clearly with no obvious marking to the facings.

Please take a look at the gallery images for a closer look at the interior sections.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic black 3 spoke BMW steering wheel sits in place at the drivers hands. No fuss and no nonsense involved here with the wheel designed to keep the driver focused on the road ahead.

We noted no signs of major wear or marking on the wheel showing in a respectable condition, the centre badge on the wheel did show with some signs of wear to the finish.

The automatic gear selector showed well and without major issue or concern. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Smooth, effortless power delivery comes from the ~282BHP V8, driving the rear wheels through a slick 5 speed automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

BMW’s well established, all aluminium M60 engine provides the power and can propel this substantial tourer from 0 - 60 MPH in ~7 seconds. A real highlight of the car is the upgraded stainless steel Powerflow quad exhaust. The upgrade cost Pete over ~£1,000 and sounds excellent when firing the BMW up and taking it on a drive.

We noted no issues from start up which we've highlighted in the mechanical review video. Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the BMW start up and take in the lovely sounds of the V8. We go into further detail about the 840 and take it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, Pete took us around some local roads, we heard no unwanted knocks, bangs or noise from the suspension which provided an enjoyable journey. We cover off the underside of the BMW's exterior in our Mechanical gallery section.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

On the drive with Pete, the car pulled very well, the engine made no unwanted noises but did provide a lovely burble from the V8 whilst driving helped by the upgraded exhaust. Gear changes were slick through the automatic shifts and overall, the car felt comfortable and capable. Everything you’d expect from a top of the range BMW.

We take the 840 out on some local roads to get a better feel for the car. Head over to the 'on the road' video to hear our thoughts on the journey, additional feedback from the owner and to see how the car performs.

Electrics and Other

The BMW is complete with pop-up headlights and air conditioning which was re-gassed and had a new condenser fitted in August 2022. The car comes with its original cassette player, a trip computer and electrically adjustable seats.

Pete told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

Coming from long ownership, this low mileage 8 Series has had some renovation work over the last year after a long period of storage and little use, just 5 former keeper and ~39,000 miles.

Over the past year the BMW has been treated to a few updates to the car bringing it back to a much better standard than from years prior. A new stainless steel exhaust system has been fitted which cost over ~£1,000 in September 2022, new starter motor, new batteries, refurbished 17" wheels. Additionally the BMW has had works carried out on; a new air con condenser and front nose cone re-spray in August 2022, the underside of the car has been wax oiled in July 2022 which cost ~£300 and new brake discs and pads and replacement brake and fuel pipes in April 2022 costing over ~£1,000 in total.

There is limited history, as the car has been through periods of storage, but included in the paperwork are past MOT certificates, bills for repair works and original owner’s manual and service books.

The private number plate will be included with the car.

Should there be any questions required, Pete would be happy to answer these in the section below.
