The iconic E36 BMW M3 is perhaps one of the most universally loved M-Power cars to have ever rolled off the production line.

First introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1992, the brand new E36 BMW M3 was received by a captivated audience and went on to be a massive commercial success; selling nearly 29,000 units by 1995. Leaving the factory floor with its iconic 3.0L straight six engine, the M3 produces ~286BHP and comes with a reliable and snappy 5-speed manual gearbox. With its subtle styling queues keeping the M3 very much in the ‘sleeper’ category, this M-Power machine is without doubt the foundation of all that BMW M-series cars have become.

Coming from a ~11 and a half year ownership, this particular example comes to market with just ~63,200 miles on the clock, painted in stunning "Avus Blue Metallic", and refurbished alloy wheels.

I love the M-Sport models, this car has been with me since 2013.

Having originally been a Vauxhall man through and through, Keith was introduced to the world of M-Power BMW’s some years ago and hasn’t looked back since, owning an M5 too alongside this car on auction. Since purchasing his M3 Keith has enjoyed every mile he’s driven in it and takes great pride in maintaining, cleaning, and fettling the car to his heart's content. Making a point of keeping the car garaged year round, The last ~11 and a half years of this M3’s life have been that of luxury.

Looking to move house, Keith is now faced with the prospect of thinning down his collection and has decided to trust us with the auction of his beloved M3. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

This example of the iconic M3 shows little signs of wear, the Avus Blue Metallic paintwork highlighting the famous body lines of the E36.

Wheels and Tyres

The deep dish 5 spoke alloy wheels appear to be in great condition and the polished finish has been well maintained by Keith after having the wheels refurbished during his ownership. The wheels as a whole are free of corrosion and don’t appear to be damaged in any way.

The tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport 3’s which look to have good tread across the board. These are DOT Marked 2013 and were fitted to the car shortly after Keith took ownership of the vehicle.

Bodywork

The E36’s distinctive body lines appear unbroken across the vehicle's exterior, with no signs of visible damage. All panel gaps also appear to be straight and true, not showing any obvious signs of repair.

Paint

The "Avus Blue Metallic" paintwork looks to be in remarkable condition for its age, showing no sign of heavy oxidation, corrosion, peeling clearcoat, or stone chips and scratches. The texture, tone, and shade of colour all appear to be even and matching across the vehicle too.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, with little to comment on. All glass panes are free from any visible damage, major chips, cracks or scratches.

The roof is in good condition, with just some signs of ageing to the colour that come with time, no apparent rips or tears. Likewise the black plastic trim pieces around the car are in good condition, with no excessive fading, cracked, or damaged trims.

Interior

With leather interior and plenty of modern conveniences, the E36 M3 provides a comfortable cabin for both driver and passenger.

Seats and Carpets

The seats appear to be in great condition visually, with no obvious damage to the leather in the form of splits, cracks, or tears, the condition belies the mileage.

Likewise the carpets are in good condition too, with no visible spots of wear or discolouration that could be seen on the day of our visit.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in great condition on the whole, with no major scratches, cracks, or wear to either upper or lower dash, which is in matching leather to the seats and door cards.

Likewise all switchgear is present, correct, and in fully working condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The typical chunky BMW steering wheel we all know and love is on show here, it presents in good condition with no obvious blemishes or damage to be seen. The leather is in good condition and the same can be said for the stitching, which appears to be in good condition too.

The gear stick is in similar condition to that of the rest of the interior, with no damage visible. The leather gear knob and gear gaiter are not visibly damaged and the surrounding centre console is also in good condition.

Mechanics

Powered by a 3.0L straight six engine capable of producing ~286BHP, it has more than enough power to outshine even some modern performance cars.

Engine and Gearbox

During our ‘Cold Start’ video you can see the engine start from cold, running smoothly and starting without any issues whatsoever. Likewise during our ‘On The Road’ video you can see the car out on the roads surrounding Long Sutton, where the car performs faultlessly too, Keith going through the gears without issue.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride comfort of the E36 is surprisingly good for a performance focused car such as this, offering plenty of shock absorption without sacrificing cornering ability. The suspension seems to be in good condition, with no untoward noises coming from any of the corners.

Likewise the brakes seem to be in good working order, stopping the car quickly and efficiently during our time out on the road.

The Drive

The car drives exceptionally well, as you would expect from any M-Power car. The engine performs excellently, providing plenty of power and torque, the suspension handles corners precisely and without worry, and the interior is both a comfortable and and enjoyable place to be, and on sunny summer days the ability to take the roof down really just adds to the experience.

Electrics and Other

We noted no electrical issues with the car during our visit, noting that all lights and electrical systems worked as expected, including the convertible roof. The car is also fitted with an aftermarket stereo which Keith tells us is in fully working order.

History and Paperwork

Very well presented both inside and out, this car is coming to market from ~11 and a half year ownership and is a well kept example of an iconic M-Power car with what can be considered low mileage for the model.

With a current MOT, invoices for works completed, and some stamps in the service book, this E36 M3 has just ~63,500 miles on the odometer placing it at below average mileage for its age.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Looking at the history the car seems to have only been serviced once since 2010 at 38k then next time in 2017 and again not serviced since then. Is this correct?

Correct as the car is not used,just cherished,and only goes for an mot each year.

Can you confirm that there is no rust on the arches, sills or anywhere else please?
Is there an issue with the roof? Seems you were needing to ‘help it along’ during the early activation on the vid.

There is a tiny surface scab on the nearside rear wheel arch which the camera doesn’t pick up.With regard to the roof with these earlier models it reqires a lift till the cables take over.
