The E30 BMW was the defining compact exec car in the 90's - fun to drive and great looking.

A fine example of BMW engineering with its straight forward looks, now considered an iconic classic, this E30 is the second generation 3 series of BMW. This convertible model has its original electric windows, manual fold down roof and hydraulic steering. A significant technical upgrade in these series of BMW is the addition of the Z-axle rear suspension with this setup helping maintain the 3 series as one of the market sector's best handling cars.

This convertible 318i is coming to market from ~16 years ownership, with just 5 former keepers registered. Although registered as a 1996 car, it likely was imported out and back to the UK at some point, the original service book showing this car as a 1993 model. Finished in the BMW colour of "Neonblau Metallic" with complimentary cloth interior, it presents in excellent condition that belies the age and mileage. If you're in the market for an E30 convertible, this car is well worth a good look.

Meet the owner

Driving it is a joy, as per all BMW engineering, it is brilliantly made, lovely engine, extremely smooth auto gearbox, and with perfect road handling.

Eddy has always been into cars and their design, setting eyes on the BMW on a sunny day with the roof down was enough to convince him to make a deal to buy the car from his golfing partner; "I fell for the car right away, the blue colour and matching colour interior was very attractive, it was immaculate and in perfect condition".

A true fan of vehicles and engineering, BMW's are still at the top of the owners driving wishlist after he recently upgraded to a new spec version; "Im getting older now and don't use this car as much these days and with the new car I'm likely to use it less". Exterior

Straight forward looks with classic retro styling and modern comforts - this 3 series is an old school slice of BMW style.

Wheels and Tyres

Beautiful multi-spoked alloys sit well on both sides of the car, they are factory 15" items. Well maintained, these wheels present nicely with minimal signs of scuffing or marking.

The tyres look in good condition too, prepped with tyre paint for consignment. Please take a closer look in our exterior gallery for more images of these.

Bodywork

We love the panelling and detail through the bodywork on this car, looking over the BMW on our visit, we noticed no issues with panels aligning or any apparent marks or scuffs. All the doors opened and closed as they should, and panel fit also looked in line across the body.

The 318i has clearly been cared for through its 16 year ownership which reflects in the condition of the car overall. It belies the mileage and age, and you'll see from the "Mechanics" gallery, that the underside looks in good condition too. The roof on this cabriolet, a manual convertible, was changed by the current owner some 12 years ago, it still looks good today as pictured. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Throughout the exterior the car looks to be in excellent overall condition and we noticed no obvious issues with the paintwork. The paint itself looked even in finish with the colour consistent across the body panels, and nice shine and lustre to panels too.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

As reflected with the rest of the car, the glass looks to be in great condition. We didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on inspection.

The trim looks good throughout with the rubber seals looking to be consistent across the vehicle. Window seals look great too, in line with the condition of the rest of the car.

Interior

A classic blue and black contrasting interior with retro cloth pattern really makes this car stand out - especially when the roof is down.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of this car is finished in a classic BMW blue and black colour combo, the cloth on the seats show well across all areas and we love the blue piping finish on the seat surrounds. We did notice some evidence of wear to the drivers seat area which is shown in our interior gallery.

The carpets look in excellent condition and look to have been really cared for with minimal wear noticed on our visit. We have highlighted in more detail the rest of our observations in the gallery section, please take a look through the images for a detailed look for yourselves.

Dashboard

The dashboard is a simple, straight forward setup showing well for the age of the car, we noticed no scuffs or marks on the dash.

Eddy, the owner, let us know that to the best of his knowledge all the dials worked as they should. The interior is shown in greater detail through our hi-resolution image gallery and video.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic leather bound 3 spoke BMW steering wheel looks to be in great condition with the 'M' styling badge still in place also, possibly an upgraded item.

The auto gear selector still looks to be in great condition as reflected in the rest of the interior and finish.

Mechanics

Iconic looks and BMWs tried and tested rear wheel drive set-up, this automatic E30 is a perfect choice for cruising in this summer.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine itself looks to be in great overall condition on initial inspection, no signs of oil leaks were observed on our visit. We actioned a cold start video, the engine springing to life and sounding good. Please check out the On the Road video to see the car starting from cold and a short run around the local area, the car going through the gears with no issue and Eddy even actioning a 3 point turn for us.

Suspension and Brakes

The BMW drives as expected with a smooth and comfortable ride helped by the comfortable seats. There were no sounds of knocking coming from the suspension that we heard through the test drive itself. The braking is controlled and worked as expected.

The Drive

Eddy lets us know, "Driving it is a real delight, its light and easy to drive and runs very smoothly. The handling is great on the road and a brilliant experience". He purchased this car after having had an MGB for some 17 years, quite the upgrade we can imagine.

Electrics and Other

Eddy confirms that all electrical elements in the car are working as expected with no observed issues during our visit. The car has been fitted with a more modern stereo unit as pictured. He would be happy to answer any additional questions about the car and its electrics should these be needed.

History and Paperwork

This E30 318i convertible has been well maintained and cared for over the past 16 years of ownership, it presents in excellent condition considering the age and mileage, and was most recently serviced in October.

With no major work carried out on the car, over and above regular maintenance and servicing, this BMW shows really well for its age. The owner Eddy purchased the car around 16 years ago with around 73,000 on the clock, and has covered ~20,000 miles since.

Hi Frosty Hood is manual, Hood was replaced 9 years ago with nice blue one, also mechanism was overhauled. No bill for this. Works perfectly. Not used a lot due to weather, not normally out when wet. No leaks when caught out by showers some heavy.
