The 8-Series was the flagship model for BMW, acting as a halo model featuring the best technology available to the company. Powered by the later M62 V8 4.4-litre engine, the pillarless coupe with the distinctive pop-up headlamps still cuts a smart figure and holds its own today as a modern classic.

Spec'd new from BMW Altwood Maidenhead with the optional Aero Pack, this 1997 840 Ci Sport trim version benefits from the addition of uprated suspension and unique door mirrors and fully electric sports seats.

Finished in the rare and striking 'Hell Red' hue, it comes with good service history and a folder full of invoices.

As a fan of BMWs, Waseem bought the car in Brighton back in 2014. Impressed with its paperwork and service history, he took a BMW specialist with him to inspect the car and they both agreed it was a wise investment. With the usual family, home commitments and other priorities, the car is being used less and less, so it's now being reluctantly placed on the market.

Exterior

The striking red finish marks it out against other examples currently on sale - just look at how gorgeous it is.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17-inch M System II “Throwing Star” alloy wheels are in very good condition, with no significant kerb damage and they come complete with BMW dust caps.

The Falken tyres are all less than 7 years old and look to be in good condition with plenty of life in them and no uneven wear was observed.

Bodywork

The panelwork fits nicely across the car, with even panel gaps observed throughout. The doors all open and close well, with no obstructions with all hinges and struts up to the task.

The car is free from any significant dents asides from a minor ding below the off-side rear lamp, further marks are observed on the bumpers but nothing to distract the overall finish.

The underside, engine bay, door bottoms and boot well all look solid.

There is minor corrosion developing on the lower rear arches, but have yet to reach an advanced stage. The sunroof has minor signs of corrosion on the front edge but is fully functional.

Paint

The paint finish is good, with a decent shine and lustre throughout. The nose cone looks like it may have seen a repaint at some point and it is free from significant chip damage.

The door edges all look good too.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition with no notable damage, with the glass and door rubbers all free from damage, suggesting no signs of water ingress.

Interior

Fully kitted with interior toys, it is also a sumptuously comfortable environment - this car was way ahead of its time.

Seats and Carpets

The upholstery has worn well with no damage or major issues and the grey really compliments the red exterior - giving this classic its 'modern' feel.

The driver's seat bolster suggests light use, with the rest of the leather seats in decent order with the expected signs of wear but with no rips or damage.

The footwell carpets are still protected by the original velour overmats, and are all in decent condition.

Dashboard

The switchgear is remarkably unworn, with the dials and controls all said to be operational. The dashboard, facia and binnacle are in good condition. The stereo player has been removed as it no longer works and will need to be replaced.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The M-stitched leather steering wheel has faded a little and the wear reflects the car's mileage but remains in good condition.

The gearstick is in good condition.

Mechanics

The later 4.4 engine is very much sought-after in today's buoyant market - arguably this is the one to have.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up with no issues - the car reached temperature as expected with the fan remaining off. The 4.4-litre V8 ticks over well, with no unwanted noises, misfires, uneven notes and no evidence of leaks.

The electrics are good, although the battery might be a candidate for replacement.

The gearbox is said to perform well.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has seen some of the usual brake maintenance work in the past, with no immediate issues to its current function, although minor wear is flagged up as an advisory on the most recent MOT.

The calipers are all functional despite their low use, with no sticking or rubbing evident on our visit.

The suspension appears to be in good condition, a lower arm has been replaced in the past.

The Drive

Waseem tells us that the car rides nicely, with no clonks or knocks coming from the dampers or steering.

The steering is said to be tight too.

Electrics and Other

The retractable headlamps operate as expected, with no other reported issues by Waseem.

History and Paperwork

BMW service history up to 2008 and has only covered 12K since then - this car needs to be used and enjoyed.

The car comes with a comprehensive series of service stamps up to 2008, with less thereafter due to a slower rate of use of the car.

Invoices for work carried on on the sunroof, seats, MAF and Lambda sensor, brakes and a starter motor. Earlier work covers air conditioning repairs and alarm installation. Additionally, the car comes with a couple of the original adverts retained by previous owners, which all help to correlate the mileage and spec.

We have actioned our usual checks on the seller, V5 and the car is HPi clear.

I have not done any major work on her only wing mirrors and rear bonnet been re sprayed and general oil change never had a problem with long journeys but she hasn’t been on a long journey for couple years now but I don’t see why she wouldn’t be smooth it a beautiful v8
