One of the M-Divisions best creations it's a bonafide modern classic with the M-Sport 3.2L straight-six.

The BMW Z3 Roadster was first launched in 1995, based on the same chassis as the E36 3 series. It was available as a roadster or coupe and used the rear semi-trailing arm suspension design from the older E30. M-Division engineers worked hard to create an M version of the Z3, and used the majority of the components from the E36 M3 Evo to create such a car. The rear track was widened, curvaceous rear arches were installed to accommodate the much larger wheels, new bumpers, quad-exhaust, and a smart interior trim made the Z3M a rather unique beast.

This example finished in "Cosmosschwarz Metallic" (303) black, it is coming out of ~1 year of ownership with Gary. Garaged throughout, he thoroughly enjoyed using this car last summer with his partner and has had a major service carried out last August. With a relatively low mileage of ~43,000, and the black over red colourway, it makes for an attractive package.

Meet the owner

Simply one of the best roadsters to spend summer in, the Z3M offers both the looks and performance in one tidy package.

Gary is a returning seller to us at Trade Classics, he's now parting with his BMW Z3M due to moving house and downsizing his collection. He purchased this lovely "Cosmosschwarz Metallic" Z3M last year and thoroughly enjoyed it throughout the summer as a weekend car.

He reports the previous owner was a Doctor, who essentially garaged the car for 8 years and very rarely used it - as seen on the MOT mileage reports. Gary had both rear tyres replaced last week and a major service carried out last August (~200 miles ago). A transformation for the roadster from the M-Division, flared arches, bigger wheels and a restyled splitter.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 17" Roadstar Style 40 alloys from the factory, the overall condition of the wheels is great. Gary has very recently replaced the rear tyres with Avons ZV1's dated 2022, the front tyres appear in good shape too, they are Goodyear Eagle F1's dated 2007.

When really scrutinising the wheels, we noticed a typical issue with some of the alloys are missing their small "M" badges. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in great condition really reflecting the ~43,000 miles it has covered over the past 24 years. The panels gaps and shut lines are looking very good, as you would expect for a modern classic.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a desirable "Cosmosschwarz Metallic (303)" paint which looks of very high standard, an iconic choice that pairs well with the red leather interior, black tonneau cover and brightwork. Overall the paint is even in finish and colour across all the panels.

If we were being really picky, we did notice some very minor stone chips to the front bonnet, typical for this model, and a few minor marks that come with time. The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seal appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

Taking a closer look at a few items, we noticed white thread stitching missing around the convertible roof, along with a crease in the rear window, and some of the badges show signs of age too. The rear aerial is also missing a little bit of its rubber housing.

Interior

Full focus on the driver with a selection of analogue controls, switches and dials - the end of an era.

Seats and Carpets

The Z3 M-Division sports seats look great in this example and show signs of care throughout previous ownerships. A red and black colourway for the leather, which extends across the interior styling.

On our visit, we didn't notice any major signs of wear and tear - just some light wear to the drivers side bolster, in line with the age and mileage of the car The carpets and door cards also tell a similar story, deep plush clean carpets.

Dashboard

The dashboard and instrument dials appear as you would expect; in excellent original condition.

We really like the completely leather-wrapped dashboard and centre console with the red accents throughout. Gary reports that the radio, dials, and gauges are working to his knowledge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A bold three-spoke M-Sport wheel is fitted finished in black and red leather.

The manual gear selector is found on the centre console and is in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Mechanics

Strap in, this special M-Sport Z3M packs a punch with it's 3.2L straight-six, which outputs ~316BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

The ultimate engine to get the maximum out of the Z3's tweaked chassis, coupled with the five-speed manual gearbox.

The car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its direct manual gearbox powering the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, and for a closer look underneath. Gary had the car serviced when he purchased the car last year in August.

Suspension and Brakes

The car uses a rear semi-trailing arm suspension design from the E30, Many commentators went so far as to call it the best handling car in the world! Brakes were taken from the E36 M3 Evo and offer a great amount of stopping power.

Gary reports both are working very well with no unusual knocks or noises coming from either, and a smooth but performance-focused ride is always offered.

The Drive

The ultimate incarnation of the Z3 roadster, the upgraded drivetrain transformed this two seater.

Gary thoroughly enjoyed using the car last summer and due to downsizing his collection for his new garage has decided to part with this little pocket rocket.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with various modcons from 1998 - full heated seats and electrical convertible roof operation. Gary reports all the electrics are working well to his knowledge.

A low mileage example of an analogue sports car from a bygone era - relive the fun with this loved and well-spec'd Z3M roadster.

This Z3M comes with its original service history book and various MOT reports along with work receipts. He mentioned the car faced an extensive service last August and had new rear tyres fitted last week. The car is sold with 3x keys and remote fobs.
