BMW's M-Division created one of the best roadsters of the '90s, they turned the Z3 into a proper pocket rocket.

The BMW Z3 Roadster first launched in 1995, based on the same chassis as the E36 3 series. It was available as a roaster or coupe, and used the rear semi-trailing arm suspension design from the older E30. M-Division engineers worked hard to create an M version of the Z3, and used the majority of the components from the E36 M3 Evo to create such a car. The rear track was widened, curvaceous rear arches were installed to accommodate the much larger wheels, new bumpers, quad-exhaust, and interior trim made the Z3M a rather unique beast.

This example finished in "Boston Green" is coming out of 9 years ownership. Garaged throughout, the owner enjoyed this car on a daily basis when first purchased, and has had work completed in the past on pain points like the Vanos system. This car is the one to get if you want to use and enjoy a Z3M roadster this year.

Meet the owner

I've loved owning this car, it's essentially an E36 M3 in arguably a smaller, better-looking package.

Paul knew exactly what he was looking for when he was in the market for a high-performance sports car, and he's been the proud owner of this example for over 9 years since.

He's put ~70,000 miles on the car, using it daily for many years. More recently though, the car has been saved just for fair weather days and as such, Paul thinks it is a bit of a luxury to keep it tucked away without use. He'll be more than happy to answer any questions in the comments section.

Exterior

A combination of elegant curves, attractive chrome accents, and tasteful aerodynamic features.

Wheels and Tyres

Rolling on BMW 40M "Roadstar" wheels, these 17" star-shaped alloys are unique to the BMW Z3M and look in great condition on each side of the car.

They're wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Rosso rubber, and appear to have a good amount of tread left on them for the new owner. Paul had them refurbished relatively recently.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks very good on this M-Division example, all the panel gaps look good and Paul reports the car doors open and close with ease.

The convertible hood looks in great condition with no obvious signs of wear and tear. Paul much prefers to drive the Z3M with the roof down. Paul had new sills fitted in 2017, along with a full respray of the car, this along with the car being kept garaged helps to explain the condition. Paint

We really like the colour choice of this Z3M, finished in "Boston Green Metallic", the paint coverage is even in colour and coverage across each panel as you would expect with the car having been painted in ~2017.

We did notice two very small marks on the nearside rear wing, along with some minor scratches/swirl marks across the car, with a few hours on a Sunday afternoon with a polisher we think the paintwork could have an excellent finish. Glass and Trim

The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks, chips, or discoloration. The convertible hood looks in great condition too, the rear window having a mark where it folds. The trim around the car appears in good condition but it showing its age in places. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this very special M-Division convertible.

The bygone era of analogue sports cars, built to last with performance in mind.

Seats and Carpets

Two-tone leather seats matching the exterior paintwork look great and suit this car. The M cars featured sports seats with deep bolsters, they look in great condition in line with the age and the mileage of the car. There are creases etc beginning to show around the edges as you'd expect on an example that has been enjoyed.

The carpets tell a similar story, clean and in great condition throughout. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the interior of this car.

Dashboard

An interior to match the exterior, the full leather colour-matched interior give the sense of a special occasion whenever you're driving this roadster.

The dashboard is in line with its age and mileage. The Voltmeter, clock, and oil temperature gauges in the leather-wrapped centre console also look good but would benefit from some detailing. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A green and black M-Sport Steering wheel and gear stick greet you as you sit within the cabin of this roadster. Both look in great condition and are unique with the matching green trim.

Mechanics

Special M-Division treatment in the form of a 3.2L straight-six which outputs 316BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitting the straight-six under the bonnet was the masterstroke of this roadster. The ultimate engine to get the maximum out of the Z3's tweaked chassis, coupled with the five-speed manual gearbox.

We captured a cold start video of the Z3M which can be found in the mechanical video, the car started straight away with no fuss at all, and Paul reports no known issues with the car. He had the clutch replaced a few years ago. The Vanos was replaced by Mr.Vanos back in 2013, a known fault to develop with the engines on the Z3M.

Suspension and Brakes

The car uses a rear semi-trailing arm suspension design from the E30, Many commentators went so far as to call it the best handling car in the world! Brakes were taken from the E36 M3 Evo and offer a great amount of stopping power.

Paul informs us the car drives just as it should and stops on demand too, brake pipes from this era of BMWs are known to corrode and these have been attended to as needed. The rear shocks and mounts were also replaced on the car in Pauls ownership as detailed in the invoices.

The Drive

A thrilling experience, with great handling abilities and all the power you would ever desire from a nimble roadster like this, all the power delivered to the rear wheels and the larger track to help deliver it effectively.

Electrics and Other

The interior can be differentiated from other Z3's with the addition of the voltmeter, clock, and oil temperature gauges found in the leather-wrapped center console.

Paul reports all the electrics are working on the car to his knowledge, the car is fitted with an aftermarket Panosonic radio.

History and Paperwork

A Z3M which has been used as it was intended, it's a well priced roadster which is begging for someone to continue that story.

Owned by Paul for the previous 9 years, and used as his daily drive when first purchased, a lack of use more recently is bringing the car to sale. Finished in Boston Green Metallic over green/black leather interior, it's a welcome change from the usual red/blue/silver Z3M's you'll see on the road.

Paul tells us that in his ownership, major works include; Vanos replacement, clutch replacement, new sills and complete respray, rear springs/shocks and mounts, brake pipe replacements.

Thank you Jack, the fixings were there when I bought it?always intended to get a rack for touring but we always found boot big enough for our trips? Not sure of origin of fixings sorry!but I have seen several z3s with racks.
