Beautifully built, fantastic to drive, well-equipped - the 5-Series offers something for everyone.

Launched in 1996, the fourth generation 5-Series BMW was offered with a choice of engines suited to a range of drivers. The main focus of the car was to produce a large executive saloon that had a quality, well-specced cabin, excellent handling, and power directed to the rear wheels. The E39 BMW, despite having a larger body shell than its predecessor, is the same weight thanks to the increased use of aluminium components and lightweight metal. Using these lighter materials also increases torsion resistance, therefore improving handling. The 5-Series also has excellent resistance to corrosion due to over three-quarters of the body being hot-dip galvanised.

This lovely example has been in the family for ~10 years; it has had just three previous keepers, one of whom was in the family. The 2002 Individual spec 530i SE comes with an excellent options package and an incredibly low ~28,278 miles covered in 21 years.

Meet the owner

I inherited this car from the family, a lack of use means this very low milage 530i SE is now up for grabs.

Paul, our vendor, inherited the BMW from his partner in 2017. It was purchased to be used as a second car by his partner in 2013 as the third keeper. With an incredibly low, ~5,700 miles covered. The car was used very little, and so in 2021, Paul decided it should be used more and put approximately ~10,000 miles on over a two-year period.

He has decided to part with the car as it is too big for him, and being such low mileage, he is hoping it can be cherished by an enthusiastic owner. Paul will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

The luxury saloon offers smooth aerodynamic styling over the previous generation 5-Series.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original ten-spoke alloy wheels, these are in good condition with no obvious sign of corrosion to the faces. There is a small amount of water ingress to the centre caps, common with age and these are a very easy item to replace.

The matching set of Dunlop SP Sport tyres have a good amount of tread remaining. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the BMW is excellent; the shut lines are equal and matching, and there were no major dings or dents spotted on the door when we photographed the car. There is one small ding on the passenger side wing just at the front edge of the wheel arch.

Looking at the underside, this is quite clean, as you would expect, for ~28,000 miles. There are minimal signs of surface corrosion to any of the suspension or steering components.

Paint

Finished in "Natchtblau Metallic", the paintwork on the car is in very good shape. There are some age-related stone chips to the bumper and some light swirl marks over the car. These are more noticeable because of the dark colour and could probably be reduced or removed by a professional detailer.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition with no chips, cracks or noticeable scratches. All of the seals and trims appear to be in good order too.

The headlight lenses have a few small chips in them, in keeping with the age of the BMW; these are also fitted with optional white-coloured indicators. The fog lights and rear lights have no damage.

Interior

Comfortable grey leather sports seats are perfect for the luxury German cruiser.

Seats and Carpets

Optional sports front seats are trimmed with grey leather. The seats are in excellent condition with just a minor amount of creasing, and the electric side of the seats works as you would expect. The rear seats are also in excellent condition, as are all four door cards.

There are a full set of mats which have minimal wear, and the carpets are all clean and tidy. Inside the boot is in the same condition, with an excellent spare wheel and a full factory tool kit and jack. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from any noticeable damage. The instrument cluster is in good order and works correctly, with no warning lights displayed when the car is running. The odometer shows an incredibly low reading of just ~28,278 miles. A nice sign of originality is that the glovebox still contains the BMW torch.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original multifunction steering wheel is in good condition, and this does have a leather cover fitted, which gives it a thicker feel with some added comfort.

The gear selector has no real signs of wear, thanks to the low mileage covered.

Mechanics

The 3.0-litre straight-six provides an ample ~228BHP and a 0-62mph in ~7.1 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

With just ~28,278 miles covered, it's no wonder the 530i sounds super smooth. There are no issues reported with the running of the car, and looking around the engine bay there are no signs of any leaks or anything untoward.

Fitted with the Steptronic gearbox, the change is very slick, with no jerking or juddering on any change.

Suspension and Brakes

Designed for the autobahns, the German cruiser is unbelievably smooth, soaking up every flaw in the road with ease. There are no knocks, bangs, or rattles coming from the car, and the brakes bring the BMW to a stop in a straight line with no problems reported.

The Drive

The BMW 530i SE offered plenty of comfort and performed very well. With just ~28,278 miles, it is less than a three-year-old car's average mileage, meaning there is plenty of life left in this luxury saloon.

Perfect for cruising up and down the country, it will eat up the miles and return a reasonable fuel economy.

Electrics and Other

When you think back to 2002, having things like satellite navigation was a real luxury and the BMW had this ticked on the options list, and why not it was an executive cruiser after all, it even has the original Motorola car phone. The switchgear is all excellent, and everything is reported to be working correctly.

Coming to market from ~10 year family ownership, just 3 former keepers logged and ~28,250 miles covered, it also has a full set of owner manuals.

Throughout the life of the 530i, the previous vendors have taken it for regular MOT tests, which help verify the very low mileage. Servicing appears to have been carried out on mileage, with the most recent in July 2021 when it received a major service.

Hi Paul,
There seems to be extensive mot history missing on the Gov web site, between 2018, 19, 20, 21 any explanation for the missing history.
Also failed mot in July 2021 on SRS Has the vehicle ever been in an accident that would trigger airbags?

Hello. Is there a small patch of rust on the left of boot lid opening? Do you know how old the tyres are as some look to be cracking around the tread? Does the car come with one or more keys? Thank you.

Hi, no evidence of any rust patch, there is 1 key, don’t know how old the tyres are, but I know they are not new due to low mileage, but the car has a new MOT with no advisories, so they are fine and roadworthy.
