Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The E46 M3 is really one the great cars of the modern era - a perfect mix of analogue and digital.

The E46 M3's momentum has been gathering pace for several years now, being favoured for its nimble driving characteristic combining plenty of power with comfort. The styling also swings the E46 M3 as one of the better-looking BMWs of the era. The traditional lines and reassuring characteristics of BMW's favoured design period are complemented by the M3's flared arches, meaner stance and those subtle details unique to the model. Of course, the point of the M3 is not just aesthetics, but the way it delivers its power. With that natural feel, positive steering feedback and confident grip, the E46 M3 might just be a contender for the best M car available.

This 2006 M3 convertible finished in "Silver Grey Metallic", with "Coral" red leather seats, is also sold with its factory hard top. It comes to market from ~4 year ownership, has a good service history and has been spared of any unnecessary modifications or upgrades. Fitted with the slick 6-speed SMG-II transmission mated to the legendary S54 3.2-litre straight-six engine, the car also comes with an MOT to June 2024, two keys, owners wallet and a healthy stack of historic invoices.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Muhammad the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

For everyday living it is more than adequate, get it on the open road and it really shines.

This car has been in current ownership with Muhammad since 2019. He mentions that "I thought it was now or never to get my hands on an E46 M3. Through many searches, it was difficult finding an original example with low mileage and a decent amount of history but with my persistence to find the right car, I found this one on the other side of the UK".

Muhammad tells us "I've used it mainly in fair weather, and I've ensured that with each MOT, it has been serviced since I've owned it. With huge regret, I'm now selling the car as I'm looking to put a deposit in a house". He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The lines of the pre-flame era are subtle and cohesive, all helped by this examples excellent exterior presentation.

Wheels and Tyres

The M-Sport double spoke 19" alloys are in excellent shape, with just the odd mark noted. Often you'll see these wheels looking worse for wear, but these look to have been well cared for.

The front Continental tyres are recent fittings, and the rear Continentals date from 2016 and are flagged as an advisory but still show reasonable tread. Take a look at the pictures and video for a closer look.

Bodywork

The floor pan, inner wings and suspension mounts appear solid, with no outstanding concerns regarding the exterior of the car. The only discernable corrosion was on the off-side passenger door well, where the front wing meets the sill. The panels are flush and all free of dents or damage. The car's panel gaps are even throughout, with all doors opening and closing without issue.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish displays a pleasing lustre, with no swirls or significant signs of ageing. The colour match is even throughout, with the odd minor scuff noted on the bumpers and a handful of minor stone chips across the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen has a few minor marks but is in line with the car's age. All the other glass is in good shape, all with decent seals. The trim is neatly presented across the car, with no additional or incorrect fittings.

The convertible roof is in good condition, no major marks or defects spotted, and the factory hard top looks in great condition too.

Interior

The Coral red leather interior livens up the cabin and the emotions in equal amounts, a good match for the sporting nature of this cabriolet.

Seats and Carpets

The striking "Coral" red leather seats present well with just a few age-related creases and are free of tears, although both of the front seat bolsters, particularly the driver's side, have worked loose and will need attention.

The carpets and mats are tidy throughout, all bone-dry. The boot carpets are in a similarly decent state.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good order, and free of scuffs or damage. The centre console is similarly intact, with a little wear noted around the gear lever housing. The binnacle looks great, with fully legible instruments, perhaps the odd mark noted on some of the lower plastics, but well in line with a car of this age. The buttons and dials all look good, the centre console display has mild screen damage but is still legible.

A few marks were noted on the front armrest, and on the rear central seatbelt support. The headlining and door cards are clean with no significant marks.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel displays well, it has a few minor marks in the centre but the leather looks mostly in good condition. The automatic gear selector finished in chrome looks in ok condition too.

Mechanics

Open up that wonderful straight-six engine and taste that confidence-inspiring handling!

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is neatly presented, suggesting careful use with regular servicing. This was proven by the car's cold start, which didn't cause any problems, firing up immediately, idling smoothly with no warning lights flagged on the dashboard and no unwanted engine rattles.

The SMG-II 6-speed gearbox was proven to operate without any issues, shifting without delays. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The firm suspension set-up was surprisingly comfortable, tracking the roads without clunks or knocks. The car corners neatly without creaks and felt focused.

The brakes were effective, with no juddering or squeals. Muhammad mentioned that the rear brake pads were changed last year, although he doesn't have the invoice for it.

The Drive

Effortlessly cruising the city centre roads with a fair amount of traffic somewhat hinders the true potential of the M3, but it is able to demonstrate how suitable the car is for daily driving. We were treated to a little of the full-bodied experience, as Muhammad opened the car up, to allow the S54 straight-six engine to sing a little.

Electrics and Other

The car is provided with its factory hardtop, it's in good shape, with minor marks but nothing significant. The soft top lowers and raises without issues, and the motors operate without strain. Muhammad mentions that to his knowledge everything works on the car as it should.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~4 year ownership, this low mileage example presents in excellent condition and has seen regular servicing over the years.

First registered by BMW Sytner Coventry in June 2006, it has a regular run of BMW main dealer stamps up to almost 38,000 miles and independents thereafter, with the most recent stamp in June 2022. A 2019 invoice covering parts for belts and a thermostat is documented at 47,612, with historical invoices covering track control arms, bushes, new front springs and the usual sundry items. The car has retained a good number of previous MOTS and comes with two keys and its original driver wallet and booklets. The MOT is to June 2024.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
