Introduction

Andrew Taylor
Automotive Photographer and Writer

A car offering a rare and heady mix of continent-crossing GT capability and dramatic point-to-point raw speed and poise - all possible with up to three friends and with the wind in your hair if you choose.

The M6 lineage stretches all the way back to the 1983 M635CSi version of the iconic E24 6 Series. The irresistible formula remained the same across subsequent M6 iterations – a stylish, 4-seater coupe body with a technical powerhouse of an engine up front. Often the conveyance of choice for those wanting efficient and comfortable daily transport for the week, yet capable of continental scale road-trips and fast road action at the weekend.

This E63 / E64 version was introduced in 2005 and added a convertible option to this already heady mix. Considered by many as the sweet-spot of the line due to the use of the mechanical tour-de-force V10 S85 engine. This five-litre behemoth marked a number of firsts for BMW. It was both their first and only production V10 engine as well as the first V10 to be fitted to a production saloon – the M5. The S85 was inspired by BMW’s Formula One involvement of the time and was the only M Series engine that wasn’t based on another existing production BMW engine.

With dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and double-VANOS valve timing the numbers speak for themselves. For a naturally aspirated engine of the “noughties,” 500 bhp at 7,750rpm and 520nm of torque and an ultimate red line of 8,250rpm the S85 backs up its glorious sound with some eye-widening statistics.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting Anthony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the style and incredible sound the V10 makes - this is a car for all circumstances and it will be missed!

Anthony, the current owner, has been enjoying this Bavarian express since 2016 and has loved every minute of it. He has maintained it well during that period, as did the former owners. He has also been able to add his own touches with the original alloy wheels being recently refinished in a slightly smokey graphite colour with contrasting red callipers.

Anthony is an enthusiast and has demanded only the best for this car. He admits he will be sad to see it go but a house move and imminent building work now means it is time for the next enthusiastic owner to enjoy the unique charms of the E64 M6 convertible, oh and that amazing engine.

Exterior

The lustrous metallic paintwork of the M6 emphasises a shape that is elegant and muscular in equal measure - the car pulls off that difficult trick of looking equally at home on the boulevard and the race paddock.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19 inch 10 spoke alloy wheels have been recently, professionally stripped and powder coated in a fetching graphite colour which has an attractive smokey finish to it. The callipers have also been refinished in the red of the “M” logo and the combination suits the car very well.

The wheels are shod with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres all around in a 285/35 ZR19 size. The tread depth is very good all around. The locking wheel nuts would benefit from a repaint and one tyre exhibited a couple of small, nicks to the outer side-wall, as can be seen in the images.

Bodywork

The bodywork presents in very well for a 14 year old car and no obvious dings or dents were noted in our three hours with the car.

The underside of the nose exhibits a few minor scrapes, which are difficult to avoid in a low car with a long nose. The offside underside exhibits a minor gouge to non-structural, plastic parts and is only visible from road level.

The panel gaps and fit and finish of the doors, bonnet and boot lid are as tight and straight as you would expect from the engineering luminaries at BMW’s Dingolfing factory.

Please take time to review all the images and videos to assess the car's bodywork for yourself.

Paint

This M6 has clearly been regularly detailed and cherished throughout its life. The metallic black paint appeals thick and lustrous and highly reflective and a testament to a well-cared for existence.

As is to be expected, some extremities of the underside sill and front and rear valance paintwork would benefit from additional detailing but no deterioration in paint or lacquer finish was noted in these areas other than a few light surface scrapes.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos to assess the car's paint for yourself.

Glass and Trim

The glass all appears original and is clear, without chips and un-hazed. As you would expect from BMW, the M6 utilises a retractable rear glass window which can aid ventilation with the roof up and acts as a wind break, to reduce buffeting, with the hood down.

All windows and mirrors appear to work as expected.

We did notice some slight issues with the door rubbers as you can see in the images.

Interior

The subdued but extremely cosseting, all leather interior entirely befits a premium German GT car with a £100,000 original price tag - it’s a lovely place to spend time.

Seats and Carpets

The fully electric, full leather sports seats in this M6 are finished in deep black and exhibit no signs of untoward rips, tears or cracking. The front seats also benefit from powerful, variable heating. The ideal refinement for those crisp winter mornings with the roof down.

The carpets are presented in deep black and appear in great overall condition. The hood headlining appear in an unworn condition and no areas of concern were noted.

Dashboard

The leather clad dash top appears unmarked with no cracks or rips in evidence. The instrument cluster is an archetypical BMW affair with clarity and driver focus the priorities. The key instruments feature “M Sport” branding and the tachometer’s 8,000rpm plus redline seems to repeatedly catch the eye!

The M6 features a comprehensive infotainment system operated by an intuitive control wheel and accessed through a large, centre mounted screen. A huge range of controls, entertainment and information can be accessed here, including system status and satellite navigation system.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is chunky and leather bound in black with red contrasting stitching. A range of telephone and audio controls are situated on both spokes and alloy gearshift paddles sit at either side of the wheel.

As well as the paddle shifts, the SMG-III automated manual gearbox can also be operated via the centrally mounted, carbon effect gear selector if required. All touch-points on wheel and gear selector appear in good condition.

The condition of the steering wheel is good, however, we did notice some coating peal on the plastic inserts that is common on cars of this era.

Mechanics

The howling V10 S85 engine is clearly the star of the show here. Considered by many as the pinnacle of BMW engine-building prowess this 8,000rpm plus masterpiece featured only in the M5 and M6 between 2005 and 2010.

Engine and Gearbox

The sight of the M Series V10 emblem atop the S85 engine can’t fail to slightly quicken the enthusiasts' pulse. The engine bay of the car is testament to Anthony’s attention to detail as appears spotless and hard to distinguish from new.

The paperwork package attests to the full maintenance history of this car with all key mechanical tasks having been attended to by specialist technicians as defined by BMW’s rigorous schedule.

Importantly the gearbox’s SMG pump was replaced on this car in 2017 by BMW dealers Stephen James at 61,239 miles at a cost of nearly £3,500. This will be known by M6 enthusiasts as the key “must have” for cars of this era.

Suspension and Brakes

The big, vented discs appear to be in fine fettle and we are able to attest to the very powerful braking performance of this car, with it pulling up straight, true and with some force during our on the road session.

The M6 benefits from dynamic suspension which can be adjusted at will to your circumstances and preferences. This system appeared to be working as expected.

The Drive

It is very hard not to be awed by the mighty M6 on the road. Whilst sophisticated and comfortable, the raw power available with the flex of a right foot is always obvious. The sound of this remarkable engine is memorable. By no means loud, it is the depth and quality of the burble that impresses passengers and bystanders alike.

During our brief on the road session the car appeared to perform faultlessly and impress deeply.

Electrics and Other

During our visit the many electric refinements, including seats and windows, worked as expected. The electric hood operates fully within about 10 seconds and remains virtually silent for this period. Anthony asserts that everything works as you would expect from a luxury sports tourer of this nature.

History and Paperwork

There is a great level of paperwork to accompany this M6 V10 - a key factor in the current owner’s purchase of this car is the level of BMW specialist maintenance the car has enjoyed throughout its life.

A stamped service book is available detailing all the scheduled services The additional invoice collection presented here, details the extensive level of extra maintenance and upkeep this car has enjoyed from a range of BMW specialists. Please see the paperwork photographs for full details.

Various original owners’ books are included as well as two original keys and stereo code.

We've done all our usual checks on the seller, V5 and it's HPi clear.
