Bigger, bolder, more luxurious and more powerful than its predecessor, the later F12-series BMW 640i is a superb convertible grand tourer.

The 6-series BMW has been with us since 1976, initially starting with the E24 before moving on considerably with the E63/E64, and in 2010 the new F12 range came along. Longer by 74mm and 39mm wider than its predecessor, the 6-series was available in either a coupe or the convertible option we have here today.

BMW moved the bar with the launch of the F12, creating a stylish and very usable grand tourer. The attention to detail is second to none and has everything you could ask for, especially when you get to the iDrive system. However, it might take a few goes to navigate the menus, but once you’ve had a play around this becomes second nature and is a pleasure to use.

This particular model comes with the straight-six 3.0 litre twin-scroll turbocharged petrol engine pushing out 320hp and is coupled to the automatic gearbox, which has paddle-shift and normal or sport mode settings to suit your driving style, neither of which disappoint in any way.

We are told that BMW owned the car previously until 2019, when which Danny purchased it. Having only covered just over 18,000 miles, this is certainly a car to consider if you are looking for the perfect convertible grand tourer.

Meet the owner

The 640i has been a fantastic car to own and drive - with the kids growing up; it’s just not quite big enough.

Danny purchased this lovely one previous owner 2010 BMW 640i, in 2019. Wanting something with comfort, luxury and performance, the 640i ticked all the boxes thanks to its huge spec list as it was registered by BMW and used to demonstrate and display the 640i at the time of the launch.

The car looks to have been well looked after and has covered just ~18,284 miles since 2010. Although the car has never been used a great deal to ferry the kids around, they have grown, and now a bigger car would be more practical for Danny, meaning that the 640i is being offered to a new home after an enjoyable three years.

Exterior

From the ‘shark nose’ front to the long sweeping curved bonnet, which sets off the shapely elegant flanks.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the originals which have been powder-coated in Anthracite and are in excellent condition. This was done after a small amount of worming started appearing on the wheel's diamond cut finish.

Fitted with matching Pirelli P Zero tyres, these have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Looking in your rear-view mirror, you will see the aggressive front end of the BMW approaching you, and what a sight! BMW has certainly hit the nail on the head with the styling of the 640i.

There are no dings or dents to mention, and the panel gaps look to align as they should. The soft close doors are a nice luxury extra that reminds you that you are driving something quite special.

The roof is in excellent condition and is no ordinary convertible roof. This is multi-layered, which helps with insulation and noise reduction. The car has spent most of its time with the roof up in a garage which means any creases are minimal. It operates correctly, going up and down, as seen in our exterior review video.

Paint

Finished in Black Sapphire Metallic, the 640i is in excellent condition, having only covered ~18,284 miles. There are some unavoidable stone chips to the bumper's lower section, but not too many and looks in keeping with the mileage.

The paint finish has good depth, and just some light swirl marks can be seen in the right light. The panel which lifts to store the roof does have some slight bubbling around the edge. This is really light and quite difficult to see, and Danny reports it hasn’t gotten any worse in his three-year ownership.

Glass and Trim

The windows around the car are in excellent condition with no apparent scratches. The rear quarter windows have had a tinting film applied. The rear window also operates as the wind deflector, which can be raised and lowered at the touch of a button.

The headlights and rear lights are in excellent condition with no splits or cracks.

Interior

This is one well spec'ed BMW - head-up display, DAB, surround-view, park assist and Ivory White Dakota leather - gorgeous.

Seats and Carpets

The finest Ivory White Dakota leather is what graces the interior of the 640i. The electric memory seats are also ventilated and heated, work as they should, and are in excellent condition with very little apparent signs of wear.

The carpets are covered with a set of fitted mats, which are in excellent condition. Lifting these reveals the cream carpet, which is nice and clean. Inside the boot there is a genuine BMW load liner fitted, the warning triangle is in place, and the tool kit and battery are under the false floor.

Dashboard

What a great place to be! The dashboard has no damage to point out. Finished with brushed aluminium trim, this is also free from any scuffs. Sitting behind the wheel, you will see the head-up display enabling you to keep focused on the drive ahead. Should your eyes start to wander, the instruments light up as they should with no warning lights displayed with the engine running, and the odometer displaying a reading of ~18,284 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in good condition with no excessive wear. The multifunction controls work as they should, and the car is also fitted with paddle-shift gears if you prefer.

The gearknob is in good condition with no excessive scratches to the top.

Mechanics

The 3.0 straight-six engine with twin-scroll turbochargers gives you 320hp and 0-60mph in sub ~5.5 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine in the BMW has been serviced regularly and looks and sounds in excellent order with no untoward noises and no signs of any oil leaks when we visited the car.

The gearbox is automatic or can be changed via the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

The car pulls strongly through the gearbox with a smooth change.

Suspension and Brakes

Out in the car, there are no noises to report coming from the suspension, and the ride is smooth. Danny has had the calipers removed and painted red, and a new set of front pads were fitted upon the rebuild, which was carried out in September 2020.

The Drive

Being in the 640i is not only a great place to be with all the creature comforts you could wish for, but the power of the BMW is also fantastic, and with a sub 5.5 second 0-60mph, it isn't a car to hang about when the pedal it pressed hard enough.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the BMW is in excellent condition, with no apparent signs of wear to the buttons or dials. Danny reports everything to work as it should with no issues.

You can even check the car for faults from the vehicle menu and to confirm it came up with no faults when we visited Danny.

History and Paperwork

Owned by BMW until 2019, the 640i had very little use covering just over ~6,000 miles up until then.

The car is reported to have been registered by BMW and used as a demonstration car, going to various dealers up and down the country to show off the new 6-series convertible at the time of the launch.

The handbooks are present, which does include the service book. Although there is only one stamp, several invoices show the car has been serviced, with the last one carried out in December 2021. Please note, that the personalised registration plate will be removed before the auction ends.

This is a fantastic opportunity to jump into an amazing, well specced, low mileage, excellent condition and low ownership car, which would have cost in excess of £70,000 in 2010. Is there anything else to think about? We don’t think so.
