Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

A purist driving experience – simply point it, and it will go!

Colin Chapman's manifesto of ‘Simplify, then add lightness’ has become a fitting tribute over the 58 years of the Seven's existence. That philosophy of a steel space frame, two seats and an engine translated seamlessly into the racing world, and proved that you don’t need horsepower to get your thrills. While modern variants of the Caterham Seven have considerably more whack than those early Chapman cars, the exhilarating driving experience remains deep in the car's DNA. The Rover K-Series engines were introduced into the Caterham in 1996 and proved to be ideally suited to the Seven thanks to their lightness and constant development.

Coming to the market after spending the last ~18 and a half years with our vendor, Geoff. The Caterham is fitted with the 1.4-litre K-Series engine, which is fuel-injected, making it a very reliable and robust unit with a nice amount of power for something which weighs in at a little more than a roller skate.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Geoff the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

"Working away in Saudi Arabia for several years – it was nice to come back and treat myself to the Caterham."

Geoff has had the pleasure of owning this lovely 1995 Caterham K-Series Classic for the past 18 years. After having worked in Saudi Arabia for several years, what better way to spend some of your hard-earned money on your return than on a nice little two-seater sports car?

The Caterham has been fantastic fun to own, and Geoff and his wife have had many happy days out in this classic sports car, which always turns heads wherever you go.

Unfortunately, due to his health, the time has come to part with the Caterham. Geoff has put it through a fresh MOT test, which it passed with no advisories; making it ready to jump in and enjoy.

Exterior

It's essentially a minimalist, road-legal go-kart wrapped in 1960s British sports car bodywork.

Wheels and Tyres

This car is fitted with the original British-made “Two Gates Wheels” - a Minilite-style alloy - all of which are in excellent condition, with just some minor age-related marks. The Caterham centre caps are in place and in good condition.

Fitted with Avon ZT7 at the rear and Avon ZV3 tyres at the front, all four have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The Caterham’s bodywork is in excellent shape. We didn’t spot any dents when we visited the car.

There is a set of side screens and a wet cover that can be used should you get caught out in the rain. Geoff has rarely used these, as it's generally only taken out when it's dry.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The aluminium body is finished in 'Caterham Red'. There are a couple of minor chips where the seatbelt buckle has caught it, but these could easily be touched up.

The wheel arches are gel-coated fibreglass, all four of which are in excellent condition. There are some minor blemishes to the stainless steel protectors on the rear wheel arch, but it's there for that exact reason - protecting te fibreglass.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is free from any notable scratches or damage. The side screen windows are also in good order, with no discolouration or damage.

The headlight lenses and chrome surrounds are in excellent condition, as are the rear light lenses.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

Simple and effective – with the Caterham, everything is there for a reason and nothing more.

Seats and Carpets

The original vinyl seats are in good shape, with no damage or signs of heavy use. There is a set of Caterham embroidered carpet mats in place to help protect the aluminium floor; these are in good condition.

image

Dashboard

The simple dashboard layout holds the essential gauges, all of which are working correctly, and the odometer shows just ~52,432 miles have been covered in ~31 years; an average of ~1,691 per year. However, when you look at the MOT history, you will see Geoff has only covered a matter of hundreds over the past few years.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather three-spoke MOMO steering wheel does show a small amount of age-related patina, but nothing excessive. This is also quick-release, to enable taller drivers to get in and out much more easily.

The gear knob is in good condition, with minimal age showing, and the numbers are clearly visible.

image

Mechanics

Producing around 105bhp, the 1.4-litre is still capable of putting a huge grin on your face.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.4-litre fuel-injected K-Series engine fires up without hesitation and settles into a smooth idle, with no issues reported by Geoff. On the road, this performs very well considering it is a 1.4-litre – it's certainly not something you should dismiss; you will be pleasantly surprised.

Fitted with a five-speed gearbox, the change is precise and feels very engaging, just as you would expect for a Caterham.

image

Suspension and Brakes

There's something quite special about sitting in the Caterham and seeing the front wheels and mudguards turn exactly where you point them and seeing the suspension react to the road. The car handles as you would expect, with no untoward noises.

With disc brakes on each corner, the Caterham isn’t short of stopping power, and it does so very well with no problems.

image

The Drive

The Caterham is a wonderfully engaging car to drive, with the lightweight chassis, responsive steering, and lively K-Series engine combining to deliver an exhilarating experience.

On the road it feels incredibly agile, with every input instantly translated into movement. The low seating position, exposed front wheels, and minimal bodywork put you right at the heart of a memorable driving experience.

image

Electrics and Other

The Caterham is pretty minimal when it comes to electrics, apart from on the engine side, which has the necessary sensors for the fuel injection system.

The rest of the switchgear for the lights and wipers is all in good condition and working correctly, apart from the horn, which has developed a fault that hasn’t been investigated. For the interim, Geoff fitted a manual horn which is suitable, and louder than you think.

A Vecta immobiliser is fitted and working correctly.

image

History and Paperwork

Pretty much all the MOT certificates are present, showing regular but limited use over the car's 31 years.

The history file for this Caterham dates back to around 1997, with various invoices and MOT certificates. The owner's manual is present, along with a complete workshop build manual for those who purchased the car as a kit. Although this is a factory-built car, it is still handy to have from a maintenance point of view.

At 31 years old, this Caterham has been cherished by Geoff for nearly 19 years. He would love for the next owner to be an enthusiast like himself, who will enjoy the classic Caterham K-Series as much as he has.

Will you be the new lucky custodian of this iconic two-seater sports car?

The number plate - L7 GXG - is included in the sale.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.
Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.
