Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

We bet you never thought you’d hear the words 'American Porsche' being used to describe a Chevrolet.

The 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder was one of the most unusual American performance cars of its era. Unlike most cars built in the United States during the 1960s, it features a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-six engine; and was one of the first American production cars to be fitted with a turbocharger. With ~150 bhp on tap, the Spyder offers impressive performance and a driving experience that feels more European than a traditional Detroit muscle car.

The next part is quite key to this particular car: being a 1964 model, it benefited from a revised rear suspension setup, making it the best-handling version of the first-generation Corvair.

Distinctive features include special Spyder badging and a sporty dashboard packed with gauges. Available as either a coupe or convertible, the Monza Spyder combines innovative engineering, distinctive styling and enjoyable performance, which is exactly what drew Gordon to this American classic in 2021. It comes with an advisory free MOT valid until 31.05.2027.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Gordon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A motoring enthusiast who goes for interesting and unique classics.

Gordon has owned this 1964 Chevrolet Corvair since 2021 after spotting it for sale over in the States. It was a pretty-much-finished restoration being sold by a gentleman who had restored it for his wife to use.

As a fresh import, Gordon went through the car, addressing some minor wiring issues, and has not looked back since.

It has been a pleasure for him to own and show, often causing confusion when he pops the bonnet at a show only for people to see an empty boot space. Now, with his eye on another classic, the Corvair is up for grabs.

Gordon would be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Sleek '60s American styling: without doubt, the Corvair is a proper '60s poster car.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloy wheels have a diamond-cut face, which is free from damage, but some corrosion has crept under the lacquer. These could be easily refurbished by your local wheel specialist.

The tyres are a matching set, all of which have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The Corvair’s bodywork presents well. The panels appear to align as they should, and no dings or dents were spotted when looking around the car.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in a lovely bronze metallic paint that is believed to have been used on a Buick, and is in good order. There are some minor scratches and a couple of small imperfections under the paint in places.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car and make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

All of the windows appear to be in good condition, with no excessive scratches other than a few age-related marks, as you would expect.

The chrome work is in very good condition, with a bright finish and minimal tarnishing; and all of the lights are in good order with no damage to the lenses.

A vinyl roof is fitted, which is easily put on or taken off in a few minutes. This is in good condition with no obvious signs of damage. It is manual but was originally powered, Gordon told us the motor and activators are included in the box of spare parts together with manuals, electrical diagram and parts list.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Large, comfortable seats are typical of any American classic of this age - it’s easy to see why, especially when you sit in them.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl seats are in very good condition in both the front and rear, and are still very comfortable 62 years after manufacture.

Throughout the cabin, the black carpet is in good condition with no signs of heavy use.

Inside the boot, or "frunk", the spare wheel is in place, along with some handy books and a box full of spares, which are included.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is painted body colour and is in good condition with no scratches.

The instruments have some patina in keeping with their age, and the odometer shows approximately 60,691 miles at the time of our visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

What appears to be the original steering wheel is fitted and shows minimal signs of age.

The gear knob is also in good order, with the numbers clearly visible.

image

Mechanics

When you hear 'flat-six air-cooled', you usually think of Porsche…not in this case.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.7-litre flat-six originally came with a turbocharger and ran on one carburettor. However, as these were extremely unreliable it was popular to remove the turbo and use four carburettors, which is what’s been done to this engine. The conversion loses approximately 10 bhp, but the reliability is worth far more.

A four-speed gearbox is fitted, the gears are easily selected, and the Corvair performs well on the road.

image

Suspension and Brakes

You may have read about the Corvair being a dangerous car to drive. That may have been the case with the early models, but this 1964 example received the much-needed suspension update, greatly improving handling and safety.

On the road, the car handles nicely with a smooth ride, and no knocks or bangs.

The brakes stop the Corvair in a straight line, with no problems reported by Gordon.

image

The Drive

Thanks to its rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-six engine, driving the Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder is a distinctive experience.

It has a light and agile feel with decent, reliable performance for its era thanks to the quad-carburettor setup. It has a strong mid-range pull and a unique engine note - similar to one that you may recognise from our friends in Stuttgart.

image

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear is said to be working correctly except the heater fan blower and rev counter, there are some signs of age as you would expect. Gordon has just had a new battery fitted.

A period-looking radio has been fitted, which features an auxiliary input allowing you to connect your phone.

Gordon told us the car is fitted with a manual soft top, originally it was powered, however the motor and activators are included in the box of spare parts together with manuals, electrical diagram and parts list.

image

History and Paperwork

As with many imports, paperwork is thin on the ground, but ultimately its the condition that counts.

The Corvair didn’t come with much paperwork except a copy of the title, showing it came from the dry state of Texas.

Gordon has saved some invoices for parts he has purchased from the States, and the sale includes several educational books on the Corvair. The odometer appears to have stopped functioning, as the MOTs and current mileage are all the same. Gordon tells us its just had an oil and filter change as well as a new battery fitted and comes with an advisory free MOT valid until 31.05.2027.

For anyone into American classics, this is certainly up there among the most interesting. The rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-six gives it a unique sound and appearance and won't fail to become a talking point at any show or coffee morning.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, and also carried out a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view of the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail. This has been done so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time reviewing everything in this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time. We just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, please first ask the owner in the comments section below before placing your bid(s), as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
