Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A leisurely way of life with an iconic legend, these AZLP variants are hard to find.

Famed for its simplicity and availability of parts, the Citroen 2CV inter-connected suspension and versatility ensured it to millions of people who simply needed basic but charismatic transport. In many ways, it is the perfect classic car for those very reasons, and its honest no-thrills packaging with a genuine sense of fun has gone some way into making these unique cars sought after today.

The 425cc models were first seen in 1954, replacing the original engine and offering a compromise in usable power without diluting the original concept. This 1959 model known as the AZLP, can be distinguished by the added longitudinal strip of aluminium on the bonnet and boot lid panel, its side repeaters, a heating/ventilation system. It was imported into the UK in 2015 and shows evidence of a complete restoration. It is fully registered for UK roads, has an MOT to November 2022 and comes with a box full of spares.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Lyndon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

2CVs are full of quirky character, which was perfect for a film project I had planned.

Lyndon has a fascinating collection of vintage cars, but was motivated to buy the Citroen specifically for a film project which sadly fell through. While he has had the car in his possession, it hasn't seen much in terms of use, this proving no issue as the car was purchased in good order.

He enjoys the unusual nature of the car and the goodwill it inspires in people but has chosen to sell it with the film project no longer going ahead. Lyndon will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Solid and complete, this rare AZLP version retains its originality and is quite a sight on UK roads.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are in very good condition, with no minimal signs of wear, simple original steel items painted in an off-white.

The Firestone tyres display a pleasing amount of tread and appear to be less than 10 years old. View the images to see the detail.

Bodywork

The car has likely seen a level of restoration in the recent past, looking at the structural condition, along with the solid panel work and floor pan. A glance under the floor mats reveals a very solid floor pan, with no issues noted on the pedal wells, seatbelt anchors, inner wings or boot floor. The exterior panels are generally straight and well-mounted with no significant blemishes on the body, with a few signs of age noted on the A-pillars. The doors open and close easily, with no issues with the hinges or door catches. The fluted bonnet is in good shape, with a few metal imperfections noted.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint has been well applied with an even hue and good colour match throughout. It displays a somewhat hazy finish but it suits the character and age of the car quite well. There are no significant signs of road use, chips or damage spotted on the car, other than the odd light mark.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The aluminium trim is all complete with some of the brightwork showing a little age but rather good considering the age of the car.

The glass is good, with decent seals. The indicators have faded a little but are still up to the task. The rear lights are very good, with no issues with the headlamps. The car also comes with a pair of headlamp muffs. The bumpers are solid, but it's worth nothing the offside rear wing guard does have a fracture.

Interior

The cabin is neatly presented with many of its original features intact.

Seats and Carpets

The seat fabrics and frames are in very good condition with no impediments of any note, these likely will have been part of the renovation this car received in the past.

The car has been fitted with an aftermarket carpet, which is a decent fit, in place of rubber matting you often see. Take a look through the gallery to see the detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard retains a little patina and displays well with a tidy layout and no real issues in terms of presentation. The basic equipment is all said to function, with the speedometer being subject to a recent overhaul. The main panel and controls are in good condition, with the clockwork timed indicator working as it should. The door cards are in very good order. This model uses road speed-related windscreen wipers.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in very good condition, with the gear control showing very little in terms of wear, items again that likely saw renovation during previous ownership.

Mechanics

There's a sophisticated philosophy behind that mechanical simplicity, a reason why the 2CV still has a cult following to this day.

Engine and Gearbox

The 425cc is an eager starter, and the distinctive air-cooled engine chatters away with no misfiring or exaggerated clacking noises. It likes to puff out a little smoke on start-up, but once warmed out there was very little on the day to suggest any engine issues.

The gearbox engages well with no slackness or crunching observed. The car has been fitted with a new fuel pump in the current ownership. Watch the "On The Road" video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

One of the 2CV's memorable characteristics is the self-levelling suspension design, which was proven to be effective during the drive. While its cornering and road-holding ability was not tested to the limit, it rides beautifully with no unwanted noises coming from the arms or wheels. The braking was even and free of screeching, the bite was said to be decent.

The Drive

Not a car for those who don't want to be noticed or if you're in rush, but it is a practical and roomy way to travel with bags of charm. The engine is adequate along the town and county roads, the steering proved to be sturdy with no significant signs of play.

Lyndon, the owner gleefully worked through the revs to gain ground, and the engine seemed genuinely happy to be encouraged before each gear change.

Electrics and Other

The roof is in good condition and rolls back with no issues. It comes with a box of spare parts, including its original French issue plates. Currently, the car is is fitted with age related period black/silver registration plates.

History and Paperwork

It comes with the added confidence of a MOT and several new parts in the current ownership, these early AZLP cars are a rare sight in the UK.

Believed to have been last registered in the Normandie area of France, it was first imported into the UK in 2015 and has since seen 4 keepers over this period. The current owner has recently overhauled the speedometer and has just fitted the car with a new fuel pump. It comes with its V5, has an MOT to November 2022 and comes with a selection of spare parts.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
