Introduction

A '70s sports-luxury car like no other, the SM is still an astonishing accomplishment.
The Citroen SM is the result of a short-lived but well-documented alliance between Citroen and Maserati. Launched in 1970 as a tour-de-force to showcase Citroen’s hydropneumatic suspension system and Maserati’s light alloy V6 engine, the SM found its place as a serious alternative to the Porsche 911, Ferrari Dino and Jaguar E-Type. Delicately styled by the legendary Robert Opron, it was the first notable high-performance French car of the 1970s and was considered the fastest front wheel drive car of the era.
Driving the SM, in true Citroen fashion, is utterly unique. The modernist-influenced cabin, using high-quality materials was revolutionary at the time. The combination of sharp handling, self-centring steering and world-class braking fused the ability to travel in comfort at any speed. It also offered favourable fuel consumption compared to its rivals - class-leading aerodynamics play a helpful part in this, and the slippery shape could help glide the car up to 140mph, without much effort. As a symbol of optimism and progressive technology, the Citroen SM became an instant classic.
Imported by Andrew Brodie, an SM specialist into the UK in 2013, this stunningly presented 1971 2.8-litre V6 in Platinum Blue with a black interior has seen almost €32,000 worth of work. With the benefit of overhauled brakes and suspension, on top of the bodywork refurbishment and engine rebuild, this example has been seen to be believed. It is MOT and Tax exempt and comes with an impressive history file.

I'M INTERESTEDAsk Questions
Hi Bidding assuming an mot as you offered ,thanks
Heya, beautiful car.
Three Qs from me:
1- any comment on the underside condition of the car?
2- is that one oil change since 2023?
3- I notice the vids are from 12 months ago too, has anything changed since then in the condition etc?
Alex.
The underside is in good condition
Last oil change in January 2025
No changes since the video
Nick
Thank you for your question
When I purchased the car it was without an MOT
When it was evaluated for me by a qualified MOT tester prior to purchase, no issues about the safety were raised
I would be happy to sell the car with an MOT if required by the purchaser and the sale could be subject to this
Hope this is helpful
Surjit
Many thanks for your reply. Should my bid eventually be successful, this would be a condition of purchase on my side.
Hi
I’m interested to know why the car was not presented with a current MoT. I know it’s not legally required, but for a buyer it gives reassurance that the car is safe to drive in it’s current state and the reserve price has been set accordingly. The last MoT mentioned structural corrosion as an advisory, which gives me pause for concern since this was eight years ago and the photos and videos, while very comprehensive show nothing of the underside of the car. Can you comment on these points please?
many thanks
Hi
Along with ArchiNick I would also be interested in hearing about any regular maintenance over the last years. I notice that the engine has had some top end work in the past but still sounds very tappety. This is not how a Maserati V6 should sound.
Also, the roof has clearly been resprayed more recently. It is distinctly a different shade of blue than the remaining bodywork. Do you know why this was painted and is that why the top windscreen trim is missing?
Thanks
Hi Jonty and Happy New Year
Yes the engine does sound tappety and did so when I purchased the car. My intention was to have the tappets re-set but since it drives very well as it is, and the fact that I hardly drive it, I haven’t got around to sending it to McGrath’s.
The roof has in fact not been painted whilst the rest of the car has. The top windscreen trim was missing upon purchase and I was not able to locate one when I looked last year. I am sure one could be found and I was advised that a universal fit trim would fit but it is not in chrome
The screen does not leak because of this
I hope this is useful
Thanks

Hi Surjit,
Happy New Year
Although there appear to be no service records after 2017, could you give some details of any additional/regular service work completed since that time?
It would be helpful if you could let me know which specialist mechanics you have used in your area (I’m based in the southeast).
Many thanks!
Nick
Hi Nick and Happy New Year to you also
I have owned the Citroen since August 2023 and have driven the car less than 1000 km. In the last 8 years it has been driven on average 600 km per year
I believe the car was in storage prior to my ownership for a prolonged period so I cannot confirm any details of servicing between 2017 and 2023
During my ownership the car has had an oil change and replacement leads which I did myself
Hope that helps
Thanks
Surjit
