Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner and Photographer

Small, sharp, and full of character - the AX GT5 packs lively performance into a compact package, making every drive fun and engaging.

The Citroen AX GT5 is a standout example of early ’90s hot hatch design, combining lightweight agility, spirited performance, and quirky French character. As one of Citroen’s most engaging small cars, the AX delivers an exhilarating drive thanks to its punchy 1.4-litre engine and remarkably nimble chassis.

Despite its compact dimensions, the AX GT5 feels planted and agile in every corner, with carefully tuned suspension and chassis that enhance both performance and efficiency. It’s a car that’s as practical for everyday use as it is fun to drive.

Work was completed in 2023 with a wiring tidy, new fan motor and steering column stalk, replacement carpet sections, new bulbs, door lock solenoid motor, updates to the driver's seat and passenger door fabric with works costing over ~£2,000. The alternator was replaced in 2024 along with an engine check over and rebuild works. Our vendor will put the car through a fresh MOT before the final sale.

This lovely example comes to market with low ownership and presents in brilliant condition overall. It's a collectors joy, offering an engaging experience and a true sense of nostalgia, connecting it to a time when hot hatches were defined by agility, character, and pure driving enjoyment.

Capturing the spirit of the ’80s and ’90s hot hatch era, the AX GT5 remains a sought-after classic, celebrated by enthusiasts for its blend of performance, personality, and compact charm. For anyone seeking a compact classic that balances fun and practicality, the Citroen stands as a perfect example of what made French hot hatches so special.

We got caught out by some typical Scottish weather when doing our beauty shots but all technical photos and videos the car is dry.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As brilliant now as it was back in the '90s - it's a little rocket on the road.

John has fond memories of the Citroen AX from his days as a mechanic and holds a passion for '80s and '90s hot-hatches. John says, "I remember these when they first came out and I knew that one day I wanted to own one. As time went by, I forgot about them until I came across this one. I knew then it was the time to get one of my own!"

The AX GT5 has been looked after over its years with the current owner, John says, "I wanted to keep this one as it was factory intended as much as I could do. Having a largely original model is more my style and I'm glad this one hasn't changed too much over its time on the road".

This example is being replaced by a newer 3 door GTi model which John is in the process of buying, he says, "I don’t have space to keep them both unfortunately or would be keeping it".

Should any further queries be needed on the car, John would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

The car stands out with its subtle yet purposeful styling cues, including body-coloured bumpers, GT decals, and a slightly lowered stance.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14" 4-spoke wheels, finished in polished silver all appeared to be in great overall condition. We noted some light age-related marks to the wheels, in keeping with the age of the car but otherwise, there were no major issues.

The AX is fitted with a set of Kumho Solus tyres to the front and rear, with a tread specification of 155/65 and date codes from 2012.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Citroen and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

This Citroen is a lovely example - the car sits level, with shut lines and panel gaps looking great, and no visible panel distortion was observed. All doors, the boot, and the bonnet open and close smoothly, in line with the expected quality of this vehicle.

The exterior bodywork is in great condition overall with no major issues to note and having been well cared for to the main parts. There were a couple of marks on the plastic trim corners to the front and rear, but nothing overly concerning.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in white, the paint appears in really good condition with an even colour and finish across all of the exterior. The coverage showed with a consistent shine across the car, free from any major marks or blemishes.

We noted very few issues with the finish, but did spot a stone chip on the driver side A pillar and a small paint crack just behind the driver's side front arch.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass sections around the Citroen looked brilliant, with the windscreen, roof, side windows, mirrors, and lenses all appearing to be in great condition, with no cracks, chips, or significant scratching observed during our visit, the numberplate etching was visible in all the glass even the sunroof and headlights.

The lights, both at the front and rear of the car, appeared to be in lovely condition, consistent with the overall presentation of the vehicle.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the condition of the rest of the car. To the interior, door cards showed well, and it was clear the cabin had been well cared for over its years.

Take a look through the gallery and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

Fitted with sporty touches such as bucket-style seats, a driver-focused dash, and distinctive badging - all this contributes to a sense of occasion every time you climb in.

Seats and Carpets

The Citroen is kitted out with black hatched fabric seats with red piping trim - they show in excellent condition as did the rear section.

The carpet areas in the cabin and boot are all in smart condition, with a red stripe in each footwell.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The black dashboard appears in great shape with no cracks or scratches to report. The display area of the dials and gauges is clear and without concern, with the triple gauge set-up looking very smart.

An excellent feature of the interior is the well presented, red inset trim surrounding the centre section and glovebox area.

All dials are functional, showing clearly with no obvious marking or scratching to the facings across the driver's section. The mileage counter showed ~32,516 miles at the time of our visit.

We noted that no warning lights were displayed on the dash when the car was out on the road.

Our interior gallery section offers some closer images of the Citroen dashboard - head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Finished in black, the 'T-style' steering wheel is in great condition and the red Citroen crest fitted to the centre of the wheel showed well here.

The gear selector showed with a little age but without real concern. The handbrake showed well with the fitment and handle displaying nicely.

We've detailed more images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, in our Interior Gallery section - head over to see more shots of what the AX has to offer.

Mechanics

Under the bonnet, the Citroen AX GTi packs ~100 BHP into a lightweight chassis, launching from 0-60 mph in ~8.5 seconds from factory - pure, agile hot-hatch fun.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the car, we noted no concerns. The Citroen performed without issue while running and out on the road and we saw no issues or signs of smoke.

The engine bay appeared clean and well-presented during our visit to the car.

The manual gearbox worked smoothly on the road, with no unwanted noises, and showed no concerns regarding its performance while driving.

We took the car out on some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the AX through the gears and getting an overview from John's perspective on how the car performs, we even found some typical Scottish weather on our drive.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey, and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

Its small size and light weight make the AX GT5 incredibly agile through corners, while precise steering and firm suspension provide a connected, engaging drive whether navigating twisty roads or busy streets.

John, the current owner tells us more about the car, "Although it’s only a 1,400cc it's still very nimble. It’s so light it still makes for enjoyable drive and still very nippy even by today’s standards".

Combined with a well-balanced, nimble chassis, it offers sharp handling, brisk acceleration, and a responsive, communicative steering feel that keeps the driver fully in tune with the road.

Electrics and Other

All switches and gauges appear to be in great condition. The AX is fitted with a Blaupunkt stereo.

John told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car, and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should, except from the radio, he told us it can be a bit temperamental at times, there is some pixelation damage to the screen on the radio too.

History and Paperwork

Low mileage, low ownership, partly restored and particularly rare when they're in this condition - the lovely AX GT5 comes to market well set for its new keeper.

Paint and body work wise, the car is still mainly 'as bought'. The current owner has only done some minor bit of tidying here and there but ultimately, it's largely factory standard.

The alternator was replaced in 2024 along with an engine check over and rebuild works. In 2023, the car had restoration works completed with a wiring tidy, new fan motor and steering column stalk, replacement carpet sections, new bulbs, door lock solenoid motor, updates to the driver's seat and passenger door fabric. All together, these works cost over ~£2,000.

Amongst other works, the carburettor was refurbished in 2023 where it was stripped, cleaned and reconditioned. Front wheel bearings and front and rear wishbone bushings were changed in 2017. Bearing brackets were changed in 2016 and a new drive belt was fitted in 2015.

The clutch was replaced in 2013 and the offside front track rod ends were replaced in 2012. The AX comes with its pre-delivery inspection check sheet. John will have a fresh MOT carried out before the car is sold.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
