Introduction

Colin Bashford
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Pure romance, a unique part of British motoring heritage, untouched for 42 years!

Launched at the New York Motor Show in 1959 as the Daimler "Dart", the SP250 was aimed squarely at the US market where British made sports cars were enjoying significant sales. It was the last car manufactured by Daimler before BSA, it's parent company, was sold to Jaguar in 1960. The Dart name was quickly dropped following the threat of legal action from Chrysler, who had the name reserved for their own vehicles, and in the panic that followed Daimler promptly reverted the the SP250 model number.

With a V8 from a prestigious British car maker, 0-60 in 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 123MPH, the model had many of the ingredients buyers wanted. However, the styling and the use of the fibreglass body were controversial and polarised opinion. Interestingly the cars were used as pursuit vehicles by a number of UK, New Zealand and Australian police forces and were used for motorway patrol at the opening of the M1 in 1959.

This car is a 1963 "C" specification model and is, without doubt, a challenge requiring full restoration. Last taxed in 1980, the car appears to have been off the road and largely untouched for 42 years. What a fantastic project though. It's rare, has interesting history, appears unmodified and, once completed offers great performance and kerb appeal. With strong club and enthusiast support, this is an opportunity to revive an incredible part of British motoring history. Sit down, take a deep breath, take a good look at the photos and videos, consider the art of the possible!

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Ian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is such an unusual and special car, it really deserves to be restored to its former glory.

Having owned this SP250 since the 70s, Ian always had the intention of restoring it. Life got in the way however, and this beautiful part of motoring heritage has been untouched for over four decades.

He tells us "I love these cars and really wish I could have found the time to rebuild it. Now, I'd love to see it go to someone with the time, skills and passion to get it back on the road". Ian will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Distinctively styled fibre glass body, there's really nothing quite like it.

Wheels and Tyres

Sitting on wire wheels with period knock off spinners, these will need to be professionally refurbished to being back any shine. We don't think elbow grease will suffice on these.

Surprisingly, the tyres appear to hold air! However, with the age, you wouldn't want to do any pace on them once you get the car up and running.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears straight with no apparent major damage. This is however a full restoration project and the fibre glass body requires careful examination.

Check out the photos and videos to determine what work is likely to be required.

Paint

Originally in grey, the paint has peeled in many places and has, of course, lost any shine it would have once had.

Glass and Trim

Glass appears unbroken and would benefit from cleaning and polishing. Much of the trim appears to be present although some items may be missing. The trim has the inevitable peeling of chrome and pitting that result from over 40 years of storage.

Interior

A very British sports car cabin with a touch of Daimler opulence.

Seats and Carpets

Red leather seats and carpets are present, giving a sense of how stylish this interior was once. All require restoration of course, take a look at the interior videos and pictures to help asses the interior condition.

Dashboard

Smiths instruments and switches appear present and unbroken. Dial glasses seem clear although chrome surrounds are pitted. Being a Daimler, the dashboard is wrapped in matching red leather to the seats.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The stunning wood rim steering wheel with central indicator and horn controls look original. Like the rest of the interior, restoration will be required.

Mechanics

Proven Daimler V8 powerplant and running gear with real pedigree.

Engine and Gearbox

Equipped with the 2.6L V8 that proved its worth in the Daimler 2.5L saloon and Daimler V8 250, there is no doubting these are fundamentally capable engines.

It is not possible to say when the engine was last run and therefore its internal condition cannot be determined. These cars were originally equipped with 4 speed transmission offering synchromesh on the top three gears.

Suspension and Brakes

Originally fitted with Girling hydraulically operated disc brakes on all four wheels. These will likely need a significant overhaul, along with a thorough check of the suspension components.

The Drive

As a non runner it was not possible to drive the car. However, for now, let's go to the 1959 Motor Sport Magazine Road test - "At its price of under £1,400 it is difficult to think of a car providing more performance in such an acceptable form".

Electrics and Other

While it was not possible to test the electrics, panel switches appear present and unbroken.

History and Paperwork

As desirable as it is controversial, this is a labour of love in the making, just imagine the V8 singing when this is back on the road.

Rarely seen at all these days and to find an unmolested example for restoration is unusual indeed. This is an opportunity to take on a project that will result in a V8 powered sports car that really turns heads.

As well as the fascinating history associated with the SP250 and it's place in British motoring heritage this Daimler comes with some fascinating artefacts. Original buff logbook and Daimler handbook, service manual, various MOT certificates, rally plaques and, amazingly, petrol rationing coupons from the 70's oil crisis!

The clock mileage of 35,971 should not be assumed to be accurate as the MOT certificate for 1972 shows and 66,761 and for 1974 5,679 suggesting the speedo was changed or zeroed in the intervening period. Ian informs us that indeed the speedo is on it second time round.

This car is coming to auction as a project. We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
