Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Two-door coupe Daimler Sovereigns are rare at the best of times, but finding one in this condition and with a manual gearbox makes this quite special.

Manufactured by Jaguar Cars between 1966 and 1983, this is the Series II Sovereign based on the XJ6. The car was given a raised front bumper and a shallower grille. In 1975, we saw the introduction of a limited two-year production run of the two-door variant, equipped with a popular 4.2-litre engine and utilising the shorter wheelbase platform.

Cherished by Stan for the past ~6 years, this rare, desirable Daimler Sovereign two-door manual coupe has been lovingly restored, creating a true '70s British icon. It is believed to be one of only 11 Daimler Sovereign Coupes made with a manual gearbox with overdrive.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Stan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Petrolhead Stan is no stranger to classic cars, with a long list of desirable classics under his belt.

Not the first Daimler or Jaguar Stan has owned, he spotted this particular car several years ago after looking at another one that a former enthusiast keeper had for sale. With the benefit of seeing the car before the restoration, Stan could see exactly what it needed.

A deal was done to have the car restored to the standard Stan wanted, and just over 12 months later, the car was finished and ready to be enjoyed, which is exactly what Stan has done with it.

Having attended and won many local shows, the desirable two-door coupe has been an absolute pleasure to own.

Stand is ready to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

An iconic '70s coupe, which is essentially a Savile Row suit tailored for a getaway driver.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels have been re-chromed and are in excellent condition, with a bright finish and black highlights.

A full set of Hankook Kinergy Eco2 tyres are fitted; they have covered only a few thousand miles and therefore have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The exterior of the Daimler underwent a full restoration in 2019 and is documented in a large collection of photographs.

The panel gaps appear to visually match, and no dings or dents were spotted during a walk-around.

The body has also been treated to rustproofing inside the chassis, sills and doors.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Originally finished in 'Lavender Blue', Stan decided it would be better to change it to 'Signal Red'.

As you can see, the paintwork is in excellent condition and presents extremely well. There are a couple of very minor chips, which are minimal and should be easy to touch up.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows all appear to be in good condition; there are a couple of age-related marks on the side windows, but nothing excessive. All four electric windows operate correctly, going up and down as they should.

The chrome trim is all in good order with just minor tarnishing in a couple of places if you look closely. A new vinyl roof was fitted as part of the restoration, so it is in excellent condition.

All the lights are in good condition with no damage to the lenses.

image

Interior

The luxurious leather interior creates the perfect environment to fully enjoy the Daimler Sovereign.

Seats and Carpets

The original seats have been retrimmed in black leather. These are in excellent condition, with just a small wear mark on the driver's seat piping. The rear seat is also in superb condition, having not been used since the retrim.

The door cards have also been trimmed in black leather with red stitching, adding a touch of colour inside the Daimler.

Throughout the car, the carpets are excellent, having been replaced; there are no signs of age or wear. The headlining is also in good order and fits as it should, with no sagging.

Inside the boot, there is a full toolkit, a jack, and a spare wheel with a new tyre fitted.

image

Dashboard

To match the door cards, the dashboard was trimmed in the same leather and red stitching. The Burr Walnut fascia is in excellent condition, with no crazing to the lacquer.

The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows ~4,954 miles at the time of our visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel has very light signs of age, as does the gear knob.

image

Mechanics

A super-smooth 4.2-litre inline-six is a fantastic unit for the two-door coupe, producing around ~175 bhp.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine received a top-half rebuild and a full stainless-steel exhaust at the time of the restoration, and it runs with no issues reported. Stan has also fitted a manual choke conversion to the twin SU carburettors from SNG Barratt. Once up to temperature and at idle, the oil pressure gauge shows around ~35 psi. Stan told us there is a small oil leak from the oil filter canister, noticed when at Butlins, it was suggested to replace the canister when next serviced.

A super-rare manual gearbox is fitted, with overdrive on fourth operated via a switch on the gear knob. This works as it should, having had a rebuilt overdrive unit, and the Daimler pulls well through the gears.

image

Suspension and Brakes

With a full suspension restoration, the Daimler handles brilliantly, with no knocks or bangs coming from the suspension.

The braking system has also been fully restored, ensuring the car stops as it should. Stan has used silicone brake fluid, which helps prevent corrosion and is ideal for classic cars.

image

The Drive

Driving the Daimler Sovereign coupé with its 4.2-litre straight-six and overdrive manual gearbox is a wonderfully analogue, refined experience. The long bonnet stretches ahead in true Jaguar fashion, while the iconic XK engine delivers smooth, effortless torque with that distinctive six-cylinder hum. The manual gearbox adds an engaging layer often absent from luxury coupés of the era, and clicking into overdrive at cruising speed settles the car into a relaxed, grand touring stride by dropping the rpm by around ~500 rpm.

image

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears to be working correctly, even the clock, which ticks away nicely and keeps time.

The other important switch to note is the fuel switch. This works correctly, switching between the two fuel tanks and showing the correct level for each. The car also does not have air conditioning.

Stan assured us that everything is working, to his knowledge, apart from the radio and electric aerial, a new retro radio is included with the car, Stan told us both stopped working at the same time so possibly a single connector fault. Stan also told us the interior lights are dim but always have been, betterlighting.com offer a conversion to LED for XJC models to overcome the problem.

History and Paperwork

The word 'organised' should be redefined as 'Daimler Sovereign history file'.

It’s safe to say the history file for the Daimler is organised, perhaps one of the most organised we have seen. A full set of three folders shows invoices, photographs, and a full breakdown of what was spent on what.

British coupés don’t come much more special than the two-door Sovereign, especially with a manual gearbox, it is believed to be one of only 11 Daimler Sovereign Coupes made with a manual gearbox with overdrive, it is topped off with a full restoration carried out just 6 years ago.

There are a selection of spares and manuals which are included in the sale.

A proper, beautifully balanced British classic that never fails to turn heads. What are you waiting for?

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, and does not have any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.

*** RESERVE REDUCED***

Stan has reduced the reserve so it’s more likely the highest bidder will win the Daimler tonight.

Good luck!

Thanks,
Colin.

Morning Stan sorry to sound a bit stupid. My first ever car auction.its took me 2 hours to log in age I think. Love the car. Is there a reserve on your car as I can’t seem to find it. Thank you David Chambers around here

Hi David,

No problem, all our cars on auction have a reserve unless stated otherwise in the title, we can’t divulge it though as it undermines the auction, if the reserve isn’t met the highest bidder is given first refusal of a post auction deal, so it is worth having your bids in, good luck!

Thanks,
Colin.
