Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

Lavishly equipped, the range-topping X300 model was bestowed with the Daimler name - Introducing the Daimler Six.

Jaguar produced the X300 variant of the XJ between 1994 and 1997, marking the first XJ model produced entirely during Ford's ownership of Jaguar. The X300 aimed to enhance build quality and reliability compared to the outgoing XJ40. Powered by the AJ16 inline-six engine, featuring upgraded electronically controlled engine management and paired with a ZF 4-speed automatic gearbox, the XJ provided a silky smooth drive with all the comforts you expect from a Jaguar.

This particular car is a Daimler Six, representing the top of the range in the model lineup. The Daimler variant featured additional exterior chrome, including mirror caps and a fluted front grille. While many standard features of the Daimler were optional extras on other X300 models, the Daimler Six came with exclusive features such as rear picnic tables and special veneers. This Daimler is the less common short-wheelbase version and is being offered for sale after approximately 3 years of ownership by Scott, with only ~81,335 miles on the clock. A fresh MOT has been completed with no advisories, valid until 01.03.2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Scott the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I think the Daimler offers a ride comfort that rivals even that of a Rolls-Royce!

Scott acquired the Daimler in December 2020 from a vehicle engineer, who has continued to assist him in maintenance for the car. With only three previous owners, it has been meticulously maintained, covering ~81,335 miles over its lifetime.

The Daimler has been stored in a dry environment, evident from its excellent condition. Scott is a bit of a perfectionist, as demonstrated by his meticulous care, presenting the car beautifully and even vacuuming lines into the boot carpet during our visit. He has thoroughly enjoyed owning the Daimler, driving ~3,000 miles during his ownership. However, with a collection of cars, Scott has decided to part with the Daimler to spend more time with his other vehicles. Scott will gladly address any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Exuding classic British elegance, this Daimler embodies timeless class.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels were present and appeared to be in good condition, with just a couple of kerb marks noticeable on a couple of the wheels. We did observe some flaking of the paint in a few areas on the nearside rear wheel. Scott mentioned that the centre caps were all present, noting that they can be difficult to find nowadays.

The tyres were a matching set of Falkens, all appearing to be in good condition with plenty of tread life remaining. The front left tyre was dot-marked 2020, while the rest were from 2021. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork around the car appeared to be in good condition, with panel gaps all looking to line up well. The doors, boot, and bonnet opened and closed as expected. However, we noticed that the rear driver-side door was a little stiff. Scott demonstrated the proper way to close the bonnet, ensuring that both catches closed without issue and that the bonnet lined up as it should.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Daimler has been resprayed in 2008, and Scott believes the shade of burgundy is the same as the one the Queen Mother painted her Daimlers, although he couldn't confirm this for sure.

The paintwork around the car appeared to be in great condition, exhibiting a nice depth and even coverage. We didn't notice any swirls around the body. However, we did observe a small marking on the front bumper next to the indicator, possibly polish. Additionally, there was some corrosion on the roof and marks on the edge of the driver's door.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car appeared to be in great shape, with no chips, cracks, or discolouration observed.

All the trim looked to be in excellent condition, with the chrome appearing shiny and no pitting noticed. The Daimler badge on the rear did appear a little aged, but we didn't consider it a major issue. The only damage we noticed on the trim was some missing paint on the side moulding of the driver's door edge. Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Plush leather seats and fine wooden veneers in the Daimler Six give it a luxurious ambiance that complements its exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The Oatmeal leather seats appeared to be in great condition, with some slight signs of age on the bolsters of the front seats.

The carpets also looked to be in excellent condition. We didn't notice any stains in the footwell carpet. However, the removable pile mat on the passenger side appeared a little out of shape, with cracks on the underside. Nevertheless, this was not considered a major issue. Take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The wooden veneer on the dashboard all appeared to be present and undamaged. The clocks were clean and functioning as expected, with the odometer reading 81,355 during our visit.

We noticed that the cupholder in the centre console was broken, being held together by a screw, as can be seen in the photos/video below.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Daimler steering wheel appeared to be in good shape, showing very little signs of wear, which is in line with the age and mileage of the car. Similarly, the chrome gear selector looked to be in great condition, with no damage noticed.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

Delivering a silky smooth drive from the 4.0L straight-six engine, power is readily available when needed.

Engine and Gearbox

The straight-six engine fired up without issue during our visit, and we didn't notice any unusual noises. It performed admirably on the road, remaining remarkably quiet and adding to the luxurious appeal of the car.

Additionally, the gearbox operated smoothly, with slick shifts that were barely noticeable. It also kicked down seamlessly when accelerating, as demonstrated by Scott in the "On The Road" video below. Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

On our short drive with Scott, we found the suspension to offer a lovely ride quality, effortlessly smoothing out bumps, even on some potholed backroads. We didn't notice any noises from the suspension during the drive.

Additionally, the brakes felt excellent, bringing the Daimler to a stop without any issues. Watch the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

The Daimler was a real delight on the road. The engine and gearbox worked together seamlessly to deliver a quiet and comfortable drive, complemented by the supple suspension and powerful brakes.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

The Daimler came with several extras, including heated seats and a CD changer, which was among the spare parts in the box. While we didn't test every feature during our visit, Scott assured us that, to his knowledge, everything is in working order, except for the sunroof, which has been disconnected. Scott suspects this may have occurred during the respray, but he hasn't reconnected it. Additionally, the clock was not working, but Scott mentioned there is a spare in the box, although he's unsure if it's functional.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~3 year ownership, and just 3 previous owners, this is a beautiful example of the once top of the range Jaguar Daimler from the 90s.

This Daimler Six has only covered ~81,335 miles in its ~28 year life, only ~3,000 since Scott took ownership ~3 years ago. It comes with the original service book, showcasing a great service history up to 2006, with 10 stamps. Scott mentioned that the previous owner, being a vehicle engineer, carried out the work himself thereafter. Additionally, MOT certificates dating back to 2003 were present, all showing no advisories for 17 years. The Daimler comes with a fresh MOT, with no advisories and valid until 01.03.2025.

Furthermore, Scott has a box full of spare parts, including an original Motorola car phone and various other electrical components such as a clock. However, he couldn't guarantee the functionality of all items.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi. The colour (CFG) is known as Morroco Red Metallic. I had an XJ12 in this colour. Quite rare on the XJ12 and would think so for your car too. Nice looking car. Good luck with the sale. Royal Claret was the colour favoured by the late Queen which is very similar.
