Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The Daimler Six offers a blend of effortless performance and luxury

With clientele in the upper classes and royalty, the Daimler brand has long been associated with the pinnacle of fine motoring. Jaguar's acquisition of the brand in the 1960s meant that models were shared, but allowed the Daimler versions to be fully specified with almost every conceivable extra as standard. In the 1990s Ford transformed the Jaguar brand, helping to reclaim its reputation for quality and comfort. The new X300 XJ series was the first all-new model to benefit from this fruitful collaboration. Successfully combining luxury, refinement and tradition, without over-dependance on electronics, the X300 series went on to become one of Jaguar's most successful models. The Daimler Six is powered by the 4.0-litre straight-six AJ16 engine, which gained a reputation for smooth reliable power delivery with high mileage potential. It is considered one of the best engines ever produced under the Jaguar name. Sumptuous, supremely comfortable and reassuringly understated, the Daimler carries a genuine air of decadence without brashness.

This 1995 SWB Daimler Six is finished in a subtle "Titanium Pearl" with a "Nimbus Grey" leather and walnut veneer interior. It comes with an impressive service history and a folder of invoices back to 1998, when our vendor bought the car. The car is fitted with almost every conceivable extra available to the Six at the time, including fluted leather door pockets, picnic tables for rear passengers on the back of the front seats, special marquetry veneer and a rear window blind. It comes with a complete owner's wallet and booklets, two keys, and has an MOT to May 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I was blown away by the build and the refined standards of detail, trim and equipment compared with my previous Jags.

As an architect/director of a large practice of architects and designers, David had to visit clients and their sites across the South of England. 2 of his previous company cars had been Jaguars, so he considers the acquisition of the Daimler Six in 1998 as a logical choice. The practice owned the Daimler since it was three years old and as its sole keeper, David made sure it was properly garaged and regularly serviced. In 2002, David purchased the car from the practice to add to his private car collection.

After ~27 years of companionship and effortless motoring, David has taken the tough decision to sell his much loved Daimler, as he will be moving away from England at the end of the year. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Presented in a stylish and subtle Titanium Pearl paint, the gentle curves and poise are reminiscent of Jaguar's glory years.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16” "Turbine" alloy wheels present well, only showing minor cosmetic marks, and just in need of a deep clean to really show them off.

Fitted with a set of Pirelli P4000 tyres, the front pair are under 10 years old. The rears are older. There are minor signs of age on the side walls of the rears but all have plenty of legal tread.

image

Bodywork

The exterior is in decent shape, the panels are flush to the body with positive shut lines and all of the doors open and close with no trouble. We did notice a handful of corrosion blemishes and a few easily treatable dents. The main corrosion was spotted on the wheel arch lips, nearside rear arch and a cluster at the base of the rear window. A little spidering was spotted on the offside A-pillar and there's a mark on the sunroof. The underside of the car appears to be solid with decent jacking points and suspension mounts. The boot floor and wheel wells look in good shape.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The "Titanium Pearl" paint has consistent coverage showing a good lustre. The lower offside doors have mild surface matting, a few minor road wear chips on the nose and evidence of a few paint touch-ups on the body. The boot lid has a small blemish as pictured.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass, lenses and seals are in good order, there is a small crack on the offside front bumper indicator. The chrome trim has generally lasted well, with light pitting noted on the boot lid embellishment.

Both boot badges and a couple of door handle seals show mild signs of age. The bumpers are flush to the body and have minor surface marks.

image

Interior

Well-preserved, the cabin is like your favourite armchair surrounded by beautifully crafted furniture.

Seats and Carpets

The "Nimbus Grey" leather seats are in good condition, with the light age-related creasing and wear on the driver's seat. The rest of the upholstery is good too, a minor mark was noted on the rear seat.

The carpets and sheep wool mats are in good condition. The undersides of the front mats have worn. All were bone dry, including the boot carpet.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard has been well-maintained with minimal signs of wear. The leather padding, walnut veneer with matchwood inlays and facia appearance are smart. All of the controls and dials are in good shape and all are said to work as they should. The door cards, cabin trim and the headlining are clean.

The car is fitted with almost every conceivable extra available to the Six at the time, including fluted leather door pockets, picnic tables for rear passengers on the back of the front seats, special marquetry veneer and a rear window blind.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever have aged well and are better than the expectations of a car of this age and mileage.

Both are finished in a complimentary darker grey that provides a contrast to the rest of the leather, and the steering wheel featured a gold Daimler badge.

image

Mechanics

The sporting heritage and responsive power of Jaguar are re-packaged to make a comfortable and calming drive for a gentleman.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start didn’t pose any issue, firing up immediately with no hesitation, resulting in no unwanted noises from the engine. It ticks over smoothly, with no dashboard warning lights or unwanted exhaust fumes. The engine is cleanly presented, with decent hoses and ancillaries. We didn’t spot any evidence of fluid leaks on the day. The offside exhaust silencer has minor corrosion but is not flagged as an MOT advisory.

The four-speed automatic gearbox operates without any reported faults, shifting smoothly and without grinding or delays.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Known for its smooth and refined ride, the Daimler Six maintained composure on all of the road surfaces tested on the day, with no negative feedback or noises heard. The springs have an advisory note on recent MOTs.

The braking was proven to be effective with no reports of sponginess, pulling or squeals. They feel more than capable of stopping the car with confidence.

image

The Drive

The Daimler provides an effortless pace and a good driving experience, Its relaxed character is reassuring, thanks to the sumptuous and cosy ambience of the cabin. The 4.0-litre straight-six refinement is quiet, as it accelerates smoothly with no unwanted mechanical noises. The car handles gracefully, but there was certainly enough power on tap as David accelerated on the straights.

Recognised as an ideal long-distance cruiser, the car performs remarkably well in built-up traffic too. At low speeds it allowed us to observe how silently the steering and suspension operated.

image

Electrics and Other

David has included the original CD changer and headset with the car. Fitted with a period car phone and aerial, they are not operational but add a pleasingly original aesthetic touch to the cabin.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~27 year ownership, just 2 former keepers, it comes with a 17 documented Services and a complete owner wallet.

First registered in January 1995, it has been sold by Jaguar main dealers throughout its life having one previous owner before David. Owned by him since 1998, he bought the car from his company in 2002 and has continued to maintain an impressive service history.

The Daimler has 17 instances of servicing, the most recent one having been carried out less than 800 miles ago. The most recent invoices are for replacement front pads, the transmission wiring loom, an engine sensor and a new alternator assembly. Older invoices are from Jaguar main dealer and pertain to servicing, sundry items and a new coil pack. David has retained a folder which includes most of its MOT certificates, invoices and bill of sales since 1998.

It has an MOT to May 2026. It comes with its full owner's wallet and booklets, its original sales pamphlet, weather-cover and two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
