Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

A well-presented and honest example of the iconic Datsun 260Z 2+2.

This 1977 car offers a usable entry point into classic Japanese motoring with strong mechanical foundations and clear scope for improvement.

Finished in a striking yellow and paired with a largely original interior, this Z retains the character and driving feel that has made these cars so desirable. While not without its faults, it represents an engaging project or weekend driver for an enthusiast looking to get behind the wheel of a classic Z at a fraction of the cost.

Coming from ~4 years with our vendor, it is MOT and road tax exempt and comes with some old photos of a past restoration.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve enjoyed owning and driving the car, keeping it on the road while appreciating it as a usable classic, it does need a little TLC though.

During John’s almost 4-year ownership, the car has been maintained with a focus on reliability and usability. Key work has included a carburettor rebuild that has been carried out to keep it running well, while the car remains an honest example with areas that would benefit from further attention as mentioned in this listing.

John will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

An honest, usable example that presents well overall, with noted areas for improvement.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels and tyres are in excellent condition, complementing the car’s stance and ready for continued use. The 260Z has a mixture of tyres fitted a Hankook, GT Radial, Excelor and Federal all show a spec of 19/70R14.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork shows well in places, with strong shut lines throughout. However, as noted, there are visible imperfections including damage beneath the rear bumper, issues to the passenger-side sill, and deterioration around the driver’s side rear quarter.

The passenger-side rear arch also shows bubbling, along with a stone chip on the passenger door.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The paintwork presents well from a distance but, as mentioned, there are areas of concern.

These include bubbling around the windscreen edge and splits on the fibreglass front splitter, along with general age-related imperfections.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

Glass and trim elements are in good overall condition.

The primary point to note is the ageing windscreen rubber, which is beginning to perish and would benefit from replacement. John told us the windscreen wipers need attention too.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

A largely original interior that retains its classic character, with some age-related wear.

Seats and Carpets

The seats and carpets remain original, adding to the car’s authenticity.

The driver’s seat is showing its age, with visible wear and rips in the leather, giving it a more worn appearance compared to the rest of the cabin. John told us the front seat belts need some attention.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

image

Dashboard

John confirmed that all dashboard functions were working correctly at the time of our visit, with no known faults.

Importantly, the dashboard itself is in very good condition, John told us there are a couple of cracks but other that there's no notable damage.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The interior features a Momo steering wheel, paired with a matching yellow-accented gear knob.

Both elements tie in nicely with the car’s exterior colour, adding a subtle custom touch while maintaining a period-appropriate feel.

image

Mechanics

A mechanically honest example with a strong-running engine and clear areas noted for attention.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine runs well, with the carburettors having been rebuilt approximately three years ago. It starts and operates as it should, providing the classic inline-six character these cars are known for.

The gearbox is reported to be in good condition and performs as expected. There is, however, a noise from the rear which is suspected to be the differential and may require attention or replacement.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has been slightly lowered, giving the car a firmer ride while remaining free from unwanted noises.

It may benefit from a wheel alignment to optimise its setup.

The braking system does require attention - rear brakes are known to bind once up to temperature, with some movement felt through the pedal under braking. As a result of this issue, the handbrake is currently largely ineffective.

Due to this issue it's strongly advised the car is transported safely to its new home - we can help organise that for you; just get in touch with us and we'll put you in contact with our recommended transporter that charges a very competitive price.

image

The Drive

The car drives well overall and delivers the engaging feel expected from a classic Z, with the engine and gearbox performing strongly.

Aside from the previously mentioned differential noise and rear brake issues, it remains an enjoyable and usable classic, with a general overhaul needed.

image

Electrics and Other

John has confirmed that all electrics were in working order at the time of inspection, with no faults reported.

image

History and Paperwork

This 260Z presents as an honest example, with more emphasis on usability and visible condition rather than a detailed paper trail.

While there is limited paperwork with the car, there are photographic records showing the bodywork and paintwork that has been carried out over time. These images help support the work undertaken and give a clearer picture of the car’s history and condition.

Update:

John found some paperwork of the car, including the original service book and MOT certificates back to 1985, we have added these into the listing, you can view them in the paperwork gallery below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

What is the issue mentioned about the wipers? Are they inoperative?
I notice that the manual window winders are missing? If not converted to electric how you open the windows?
Cheers
