Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Designed with practicality and ease of maintenance in mind, the Mondial can still pack a punch.

It was the first new Ferrari of the ’80s, finding its place in between the 308 GTS and 400i, the car was seen as full four-seater with genuine concessions to practicality. The Mondial came with a proven engine and the promise of relatively low-cost maintenance, thanks to the sensible approach to the structural design of the car. The mid-engined V8 Mondial was always well regarded for its handling, with the much improved QV version denoting that it had four valves per cylinder, giving the car a much-needed performance improvement over the initial models.

As the name implies, the Mondial was Ferraris attempt to produce a world car, to meet regulations across the global markets but most importantly it was a Ferrari that was specifically designed to be easy to drive. The combination of the styling cues from the older BB and side vents that would soon become a distinctive feature of future Ferraris, the styling has always divided opinion. However, like any Ferrari, the engine is the heart of the Mondial and the Quattrovalvole version became something of a significant milestone for the brand. As build quality improved, along with the drivability and ride quality of the Mondial, the car should be seen as a perfect introduction for Ferrari newbies.

We present you a well kept and cherished example but has seen a period of inactivity in recent years, so is best viewed as a minor recommissioning projection. However, the new buyer will not need to scan the small ads for body panels or trim as it simply needs mechanical attention. This 1983 example sits on an extremely solid base, with excellent paintwork and a decent interior. In addition, the car has actually seen an engine rebuild at some point, which combined with its low mileage, offers it a distinctive advantage over similar projects out there.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

She's being sold as a car that requires minor recommissioning but sits on a very solid base.

Bought as a weekend toy to enjoy, John bought the Mondial in 2003. It has seen a charmed life during his ownership, having only covered around 2,000 miles during that time. He kept on top of any issues and while it occasionally went into hibernation, he would treat it to an MOT every few years. However, it has seen less use in recent years and now sits inactive in his garage. He's come to the conclusion that it needs to moved on.

Exterior

Finished in splendid Rosso Corsa (what else?) the Mondial QV has worn its years well.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has a set of Dunlop SP's fitted throughout, and overall in good condition with no perishing or cracks. They date from around 2009 and have plenty of tread on them. The alloys are in a generally decent condition but each wheel has small marks, minor chips or evidence of repair. For peace of mind, they would benefit from a refurbishment. All centre caps are intact.

Bodywork

The condition of the bodywork is very good, it clearly has been looked after and garaged during Johns ownership, and there are no careless marks or evidence that it has been stored outside.

Ferrari build quality notwithstanding, the panel and door gaps are as good as you would expect for a car of this vintage. The underside is also very straight, with a generous coating of under-seal evident. The arches, sill and door bottoms are all good.

Paint

The car has seen two and a half years of storage, but the paintwork has stood up well over that period. The lustre and finish are good, a lack of use in the garage in recent years presumably helping the ageing process.

There are a handful of observations that should be noted, including a small paint crack on the bonnet and evidence of loose cracking paint on the rear panel. The paperwork suggests that it has seen a replacement rear bumper prior to Johns ownership, which might point to a more recent application of paint on the rear valance.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all intact, with no significant issues, other than the usual ageing process. No cracks or laminate damage. The trim is all intact and correct, there are likely to be minor marks on some of the plastic trim but nothing unsightly.

Interior

The interior is beautifully finished, with typical Latin attention to detail that still thrills.

Seats and Carpets

The overall feeling is positive, the Connolly hide has been well looked after and the years of inactivity hasn't affected the general interior of the car.

However, the leather seats have gone dry, which is a straight forward treatment. There is also a small tear on the passenger seat, but overall they're in good condition. The car has no major other interior flaws, the carpets are complete and are in decent order.

Dashboard

The dashboard doesn't have any signs of cracking or damage, again aligning to its careful ownership and low use. The electrics appear to be functional from a static point of view, but as it has been inactive for over 2 years some electrical functions may need resolving.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

There's nothing too significant in terms of wear to the steering wheel or gear lever, both reflect the low mileage and careful ownership, with any issues relating to the age of the car or storage.

Mechanics

In QV form, they offer superb handling and performance, a joy to drive.

Engine and Gearbox

The car has old fuel from two and a half years of non-use, which is not ideal for the cold start, but it fired up after a little hesitation - the engine runs without any nasty knocking or grinding but will need tuning.

The car was in good mechanical order prior to its storage, but again it would be prudent to get a complete check done on it. Items such as the air-box need minor repairs, and the general condition of the engine bay reflecting the age of the car. The exhaust looked to be in decent condition.

Suspension and Brakes

John has occasionally driven the car up and down the street to keep the oily bits moving, but as to be expected for a resting car, checks will need to be carried out on the running gear as a matter of precaution.

Like the engine, the components had been of an MOT standard prior to being laid up so, in theory, the car should not need significant work - they all appear to be in visually good condition. The car moves freely on its own accord, with no binding from the brakes observed.

The Drive

There are not many brands out there that command such a high reputation for image and the finesse of how a car should drive and handle. The Mondial QV is no exception, furthermore, they are rated as being one of the most accessible Ferrari's to drive and own.

While it has a slightly higher roofline and space for people (ok, maybe kids rather than 6 footers) at the back it also offers an element of practicality. In QV form the car makes a lot of sense.

Electrics and Other

There are a few issues that will need further investigation, as not every electrical item was tested. The engine electrics allowed the car to start and any issues are likely to relate to its storage status rather than major issues. The engine lid struts will need replacing.

History and Paperwork

The car has been cherished by its current owner for over 17 years.

The car comes with evidence of regular maintenance, including all of the MOT's while John has owned the car. There are images of an engine rebuild, along with invoices for a few worn components. As stated, it's only covered around 2,000 miles in the current owner's company, and as a result other than periodic MOTs, he's not had to spend too much on the upkeep and maintenance.

We've carried out checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi. Our HPi check on the cars registration and VIN came up as clear. However, the HPi check flagged that a previous registration number the car was assigned suffered a Category C insurance write-off in November 2001, which we assume relates to this car, and so the guide price on this car reflect this.

On the rear buttress it is only the rubber trim that has warped with age , there is no damage to the n/s door and I can’t see the damage to the front bumper, I think what you are seeing is reflections from the sun. John

Hi John I notice the near side rear quarter roof post has some distortion to the base and about mid way up, is this just the black trim coming away/bubbling or corrosion behind or a result of the near side rear shunt it suffered. ? As a previous message stated the bumper at the front near side is definitely out of line and is buckled just right of centre, is there any signs of bracket or chassis tube distortion. ? Also on the near side the passenger door has a crease in the forward shut line is this something that’s… Read more »

I believe it was silver before I owned her , she was changed to red , a very good job as you cannot tell. John

The rev counter has never worked in my ownership, the temperature gushes for water and gearbox work but the oil pressure gauge works intermittently now so I think storage has caused the pressure switch to go faulty . The body work is fine and is the underside. It only covered about twenty miles since it’s last mot , then put into storage. I have properties in Spain, that is why I stopped using her and I have never used her in the rain or winter. John

Good evening
Can you confirm if the car has been been written off please and if red was its original colour?
Unusual combination red with red interior.
Thanks
Simon

Before my ownership it suffered a bash to the rear NS corner. It had a mot with the damage and passed!! I have photos showing the minimal damage , the insurance company decided to write it off. There is a letter from another insurance assessor disputing their discussion . This was twenty years ago . John

Sorry they are the correct tyres for the original rims , I knew they were something odd so I thought metric but you are correct they are TRX I cannot see that the bumper is misaligned, as I said the valence had a two inch scratch that I touched up with a mixed aerosol. John

Hi John
Did you inspect the front near side this morning?
The wheels fitted are to TRX profile and should not be fitted with metric tyres. Only the later flat face industry standard 7×16 & 8×16 wheels should be fitted with metric tyres.

The tyres were replaced with new Dunlop metric ones which have covered about 100 miles the electric windows work but are slow, never had a problem with oil pressure but since being in storage the pressure switch had failed, it was being receding because the petrol is two and a half years old so needs new fuel and a good tune to smooth out tick over . When I put her in storage she was running fine. I own property in Spain hence the lack of use, I have never taken her out in the rain or winter. John

Is the car driveable as it stands or would it need to be trailered away?

John Morris

John Morris

It does start and the brakes are ok , but as it has been stored for two and a half years I think it would be safer to trailer it then check it over first. John

Just had new plugs but oil and filters about three years ago, cam belts two thousand miles ago, but I would change them again because of being stored for two and a half years . Cam Blelt change is not a big job as they can be changed without taking the engine out. John
