Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

The Mondial is a lovely example of more practical motoring from Ferrari, with a mid-engined V8 and classic Pininfarina design, this is well presented and ready for its future owner.

It was the first new Ferrari of the 80s, finding its place in between the 308 GTS and 400i, the car was seen as full four-seater with genuine concessions to practicality. The Mondial came with a proven engine and the promise of relatively low-cost maintenance, thanks to the sensible approach to the structural design of the car. The mid-engined V8 Mondial was always well regarded for its handling, with the much improved Quattrovalvole version denoting that it had four valves per cylinder, giving the car a much-needed performance improvement over the initial models. As the name implies, the Mondial (meaning 'World' in Italian) was Ferrari's attempt to produce a world car, to meet regulations across the global markets but most importantly it was a Ferrari that was specifically designed to be easy to drive. The combination of the styling cues from the older BB and side vents that would soon become a distinctive feature of future Ferrari's, although the styling has always divided opinion. However, like any Ferrari, the engine is the heart of the Mondial. As build quality improved, along with the drivability and ride quality of the Mondial, the car should be seen as a perfect introduction for Ferrari newbies.

The Mondial comes to market after being initially purchased as a recommission project. It holds remarkably low mileage for its age with ~20,310 on the clock and has benefitted from being dry stored for the majority of its life. The car is in really great condition which is reflected through the gallery and video sections in the listing below, one of the only major jobs needing to be done being a refresh of suspension. If you are in the market for a beautifully classic car or have a love of Ferrari, this model is worth a close look as you'll be hard pushed to find an example that looks as good as this one does.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Don the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I think it's the dream of every petrol head to own a Ferrari, when the opportunity came up to buy one, I couldn't say no!

The car was purchased as a private project with a friend of Don, the current owner, "I bought the Mondial as a joint venture with Neil, an old friend of mine. It had been off the road for many years and even though it was being sold from southern Scotland, we took the drive up to buy it". After the purchase it was apparent Neil and Don had purchased a really great car, "We barely had to do anything to the car as it was in great condition, overall it was in super working order. We took the car to many different shows and won loads of awards with it"

Unfortunately Don's friend passed away and ownership was then granted to Don, "We'd agreed that it would come to me should anything happen, so I took it over as the sole owner. I've continued to show it respect ever since, to the car and to my friend as he would wish". The time has come for Don to help someone else enjoy the car as much as he and his friend once did, "It's a beautiful car but I need to make room in the garage. I also have some hospital appointments shortly which will mean I won't get to enjoy it as much over the upcoming months". Should there be any questions required, Don would be happy to answer these in the section below.

Exterior

Even after ~35 years on the road, the Ferrari is still looking as beautiful and stylish as it first did coming out of the factory.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mondial is fitted with a classic set of 5 spoke Ferrari wheels. These are in great condition with very few minor marks. Complete with a set of Michelin VR 390 tyres with a spec of 220/55, the tyres are showing date codes from 1997. The front and rear tyres are matched with the same tread spec.

The condition of tyres looks good overall with no obvious cracking or major signs of wear but could benefit from a clean up. Given the age of the tyres, it may be a consideration to upgrade these in the future. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Ferrari and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The condition of the bodywork is very good, it clearly has been looked after well and the condition reflects in the dry storage that Don has treated the car to during his ownership. We noted no issues with panel alignment or marks or dings to the body, a very tidy looking car.

You may note looking over the exterior shots that the bonnet sits slightly ajar from the main bodywork, given that the car has not had much use at all over the past few years, Don, the current owner, had to access the front section to disconnect the battery to save power drainage which is where the bonnet is displaying a little open.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish and exterior is showing in remarkable condition. On our visit to the car we struggled to find any real issues on the paint and barely noted any signs of marks. The "Rosso Corsa" paint is a truly beautiful colour and one that never looks out of place on one of these cars. We noted a very small stone chip below the front nearside headlight on the lower edge trim section, but had to look fairly close to spot this.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen section, side windows and mirrors all appear in great condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the main glass sections. The bumpers, grille, door handles, boot and bonnet latches, and window surrounds all look in great condition too.

The soft top shows in a respectable condition but showed us no major issues when we visited, it could ideally benefit from a good clean over both inside and out to bring it up to the same great standard as the rest of the car, but overall not a real concern. We did try and fit the tonneau cover onto the Mondial when we viewed the car, but this appeared to have shrunk a little over its life and didn't fit perfectly flush.

Looking at the badges, these all displayed in great condition also. It was easy to see how this Ferrari has won so many awards over its history from various different car shows.

Interior

With a beautiful cream finish to the cabin area, we couldn't ask for a better colour combination paired with the classic Ferrari Rosso Corsa exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The seats display really well, they could do with a clean to bring them up to a great standard but not a real worry here. It's mainly due to the colour of the leather's were very slight discolouration was noted. We could find no major wear to the leathers, only some signs of creasing to the edges, the seats felt comfortable and secure in their position.

Carpets look good and the red tone added another great sense of Ferrari luxury to the cabin area. They did show with a few signs of wear given these are over ~35 years old, but didn't look too out of place matching the rest of the cabin's class. We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The dash area on the Ferrari was very clean and presentable showing without cracking, warping or distress. The whole of the cabin section showed really nicely and it was apparent the car has been well looked after. There was a very small divot in the top of the leather dash but nothing that presented a real issue.

Clocks and dials showed very nicely with ~20,310 miles at the time of our visit. The display on these sections showed a lovely level of presentation and are all functional. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Mondial dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three-spoke straight-forward Ferrari steering wheel is in great condition proudly stamped with MOMO branding. The wheel showed with no major wear to the grip and the black finish complimented the rest of the interior and keeps a classic feel in the cabin area. The Ferrari badge at the centre of the wheel looked very smart in its presentation set against the bright yellow background.

The open gated manual gearbox is also in a great condition and doesn't look out of place in the interior. It is finished in a high level of shine which adds to the presentation along side the chrome mount set inset to the cream leather holder. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The Mondial has a 3.2L naturally aspirated mid-engined V8 capable of delivering 0-60 MPH in ~6.3 sec, and an ~270 BHP output to the rear wheels.

Engine and Gearbox

The Mondial is a fantastic runner and able to still pack a decent punch. The Ferrari's power is transmitted to the road by a rear wheel drive system tied to a 5 speed manual gearbox.

We take the car on a short drive out on some local roads to get a better sense of what the Ferrari is all about. Don worked through the gears without issue and we observed no problems with the transmission when we were out on the open road. We take a closer look around the engine bay section and highlight more about the mechanics in the cold start section of the mechanical review video. We noted no signs of excessive smoke or noise when the car was started up and running, it was clear the car has been well looked after and has benefitted from being largely dry stored over the course of its history.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, Don took us around some local roads, we heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues, with the suspension having been overhauled as pictured in the "History and Paperwork" gallery. The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop nicely.

We cover off the underside of the Mondial in our "Mechanical gallery" section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself, we take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer with this car.

The Drive

As the name implies, the Mondial (Italian for 'World') was Ferrari's attempt to produce a world car, to meet regulations across the global markets but most importantly it was a Ferrari that was specifically designed to be easy to drive. Drop the top, and you get that authentic 80s experience.

Electrics and Other

The Ferrari is a relatively simple setup in terms of its electronics, being an 80's car, the Mondial doesn't have much of the more up to date tech from modern cars, but what it lacks here, it massively makes up in style and charm.

On the dash we noted no warning lights or causes for concerns. The central dash area gave an overview that included the speedometer. To the left hand side, fuel gauge and temperature counter and to the right, options for the vehicle lighting. The Ferrari's centre section contains switches for electric windows, air conditioning and hosts a retro fitted Pioneer stereo system.

Located in the boot are spare fuses and light bulbs as well as a tyre wrench for the car. Don let us know that he has no issues with the electrical elements on the car although we were unable to test all the functionality on our visit. To the best of Don's knowledge, everything was working as it should do, although we noted that the rev counter wasn't functioning correctly when we took our journey out in the car.

History and Paperwork

Low mileage, dry stored, good levels of maintenance and what looks to be a well cared for car, this really is great piece of history presented in remarkable condition.

Having been purchased as a joint private project between friends, the Ferrari doesn't come with a lot of paperwork given that most of the work was carried out by Don and his friend. A welcome note is the brown leather Ferrari document holder that is included with the sale along with the Ferrari Mondial 3.2 branded booklets.

The receipts that are included are featured in the paperwork gallery and include work such as; new front suspension bushing set in November 2016 costing over £300, a new gas strut and indicator assembly in January 2015 at a cost of over £380.

New wheel badges and Ferrari valve caps were purchased in February 2013. Should there be any questions required, Don would be happy to answer these in the section below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Hi Don,
When you say it needs a suspension refresh, can you provide more detail around this and approximate costings?
Does it have working a/c?
When was the clutch changed?
How many years ago was the cam belt done?
Any issues with sticking lights?
Thank you.

Also, the suspension on the front appears to be higher than it should be. Can you provide detail. Thank you.
